Barry Alvarez and Big Wave Surfer Garrett McNamara on NFL Week 3
Thursday Night Football left us all wondering how Davis Mills ended up with such a long neck and such a short completion list. Big Cat and PFT opened the show breaking down a brutal night for Mills Mafia and the realization that the Texans might be even worse than we feared. While David Culley is out there punting on fourth-and-short like it's a religious experience, PFT is officially out on the rookie quarterback.
Davis Mills is not an NFL-caliber quarterback.
There's a lot of stuff that I'm sure Davis Mills is really, really good at... but playing NFL quarterback isn't one of them.
The conversation shifted to the Panthers, who are 3-0 but just lost Christian McCaffrey to a hamstring injury. Despite the loss of their star, Big Cat is ready to get absolutely reckless with the NFC South standings.
The Carolina Panthers are a legitimate team and could win the NFC South.
I'm going to say something right now. This is crazy... Panthers plus 500 to win the NFC South. The bucks are old.
NFL Week 3 Preview and Picks
The board for Week 3 is loaded with storylines, none bigger than Justin Fields getting his first start for the Bears. Big Cat is trying to manage his expectations, but he’s finding solace in the idea that the Chicago defense might actually show up to help the rookie out.
The Chicago Bears defense will successfully slow down the Browns' running game.
The one thing that I'm at least a little confident about is that the bears do, they will be able to like slow down the run game.
In the late window, the guys looked at the Bucs heading to Los Angeles to face the Rams. PFT highlighted the matchup between Jalen Ramsey and Rob Gronkowski, specifically Ramsey’s belief that he’s the blueprint for stopping the legendary tight end.
Jalen Ramsey is the only cornerback who can physically cover Rob Gronkowski.
Jalen Ramsey is really the only person who fits Jalen Ramsey's description of a quarterback that can cover Gronk. Cause Jalen is a big dude. He's strong, he's got coverage skills and he can tackle.
As for the under-the-radar games, PFT is expecting a massive offensive explosion from the Falcons and Arthur Smith. He’s leaning into the 'game of inches' philosophy for the high-testosterone coach.
The Falcons offense is prime for an explosion and will 'come alive' against the Giants.
I'm believing in what [Arthur Smith] put together down in Atlanta. I think that that offense is prime for an explosion. They're just there on the details. It's the small things. It's a game of inches. And if they can find one or two inches here or there, I think that offense is liable to just come alive.
Barry Alvarez on Wisconsin and Big Ten Dominance
Wisconsin legend Barry Alvarez joined the show to discuss the upcoming Wisconsin-Notre Dame game and his decades of building a powerhouse in Madison. He broke down the importance of 'Big Valukas' on the offensive line and why the Badgers’ identity will never change. When it comes to the future of the sport, Alvarez offered a pragmatic view on playoff expansion, favoring a move to eight teams rather than twelve.
The College Football Playoff should expand to eight teams, but not twelve.
I liked the expanding to eight, not 12... eight is my number. I think 12, you look at the number of games and I think coaches would manage that... but I think selfishly for our league [Big Ten] eight is better.
He also shared some incredible insight into the toughest environments in the Big Ten, specifically why Kinnick Stadium is a nightmare for opposing benches.
Kinnick Stadium at Iowa is the toughest place to play in the Big Ten.
I say say the toughest place in the Big Ten is Iowa. And the reason for that is their stands are about when they can actually reach over and hit the guy on the bench almost. And they're in those kids' ears now and they wear them out. And if you're not, you know, if you're not into the game where you let you have rabbit ears, they can really affect you.
Of course, Big Cat couldn't let him go without bringing up the 2015 basketball National Championship loss to Duke. It turns out Alvarez is just as salty about the officiating in that game as every other Badger fan on the planet.
Officials changed how they called the game in the second half of the 2015 National Championship.
I'm pissed because the officials changed out. They called the game from first to second half... Coach K worked really hard... and they changed how they called the game and I will say that to my dying day.
Garrett McNamara: The 100-Foot Wave
Big wave surfer Garrett McNamara, star of the HBO documentary *100 Foot Wave*, joined the show for one of the most intense interviews in PMT history. He talked about finding Nazare, Portugal, and the sheer physical toll of being held underwater for nearly a minute. McNamara explained that while he deals with physical injuries, his approach to the water is all about preparation and being 'centered' in the moment.
If you are physically prepared and centered, there is no such thing as fear when surfing big waves.
If you're in the moment, really just enjoying the moment, doing our best in the moment, then there is no fear... As long as I prepare, and I know that I'm physically ready, then I'm not afraid at all.
He discussed chasing storms across the globe and the theoretical limit of how high a wave can actually get before it becomes unsurfable.
A 120-foot wave is the upper limit for what can be surfed.
I think 120 [feet] would do it... I'm really interested and excited and can't wait... I don't know what it does once it gets that big and breaks further out.
The episode wrapped up with Fantasy Fuccbois and Fyre Fest, where Hank’s golf game is once again a point of contention and Billy is struggling to prove to the power company that he doesn't owe a year's worth of back payments for a place he just moved into.
Next week is the subathon, so prepare to see PFT's eyes or watch us die trying.
