Bengals and Rams Super Bowl Bound, Brady Retirement Drama, and 4th Quarter Kyle Shanahan
Championship Sunday delivered in a major way, and we have a Super Bowl matchup that exactly zero people predicted back in August. Big Cat and PFT started things off with a celebratory tone, largely because it happened to be their back-to-back birthdays. While PFT is embracing his 37th year on Earth, Big Cat is less than thrilled about the milestone.
37 is the saddest birthday for an adult
I'm comfortable in 37. I'm old I'm washed. Who cares? 37 is in terms of the birthday scale. It ranks at the very bottom. The saddest birthday, really nothing burns.
The Bengals Chug the Magic Milk
Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals are heading to the Super Bowl after a massive comeback in Arrowhead. The Chiefs looked like they were going to run them out of the building early, leading 21-3, but Patrick Mahomes and the offense completely stalled in the second half. Big Cat argues that while the Bills' loss was stunning, this one actually cuts deeper for Chiefs fans because they had it won.
The Chiefs' loss to the Bengals is more heartbreaking than the Bills' 13-second loss
I think that this loss for the Chiefs is more heartbreaking than the Bills' loss. Because here's why... Bills went shot for shot. They gave it their all.
As the Chiefs' dynasty dreams took a hit, Hank pointed out that the window might be closing faster than people realize for the powerhouse in Kansas City.
The Chiefs missed their window to be a dominant dynasty
When you start to lose a lot or you don't win what you're expected to. When I get there, like what you were saying, they're going to, they're not going to be the same dominant chiefs for over and over and over and over and over again, they have to change. Like they're missing their window. Their window missed.
Between Joe Cool's scrambles and Evan McPherson being "TSA Pre-check on steroids," the Bengals have become the darlings of the league. Big Cat is leaning all the way in on the Burrow hype train heading into Los Angeles.
America will be rooting for the Bengals over the Rams in the Super Bowl
I'm going to root my dick off for the Bengals against the Rams... Who's not rooting for the Bengals in this Super Bowl? We are officially rooting for the Bengals to win the Super Bowl... America's going to root for the Bengals.
One thing the guys can all agree on after watching the CBS broadcast is that the honeymoon phase for Tony Romo is officially over. Between the singing and the constant over-explaining, the guys feel vindicated in their long-standing stance on the color commentator.
Tony Romo is a wildly overrated broadcaster
We've never been more right. About anything in the history of this podcast than we are about Tony Romo. America has finally come around to what we were getting made fun of four or five years ago. I just think he's wildly overrated... The guy is too much on a broadcast. He doesn't let it breathe.
The Rams Go All-In and Kyle Shanahan Panics
In the NFC, the Rams' star-studded roster finally punched their ticket. Matthew Stafford proved he was the missing piece, and Cooper Kupp continued his run as the most dominant force at wide receiver.
Cooper Kupp is the best wide receiver in the NFL right now
Cooper Kupp is the best wide receiver in the NFL right now. I mean, I know that there's guys that you can throw in there, but his ability to make like every catch every single way and like all the big catches—he was incredible.
Big Cat was quick to praise Sean McVay and the front office for their aggressive trades. While some teams value draft picks like gold, the Rams treated them like trash to get Von Miller and Odell Beckham Jr., and it’s hard to argue with the results.
The Rams' 'all-in' strategy was the correct move regardless of the Super Bowl outcome
The Rams went all in... and it paid off because you're going to a Super Bowl. You're 60 minutes away from a flag fly forever moment. So like, you can't say that this was the wrong strategy. I love when teams go all in. I love when teams are like, 'fuck this, winning a championship means everything.'
On the flip side, the Niners' collapse felt like a recurring nightmare for Kyle Shanahan. The guys broke down the questionable punting decisions and the disappearing act of Deebo Samuel in the fourth quarter. Big Cat thinks there is a genuine trend developing with Shanahan’s late-game management.
Kyle Shanahan has a psychological issue with holding 4th quarter leads in big games
Kyle Shanahan now... there's enough evidence out there to say something is up with Kyle Shanahan late in games. So the last four times... where a team has blown a double digit lead in the fourth quarter, Kyle Shanahan has been part of three out of four of those... something happens. He panicked.
As for Jimmy Garoppolo, the clock has likely run out on his time in San Francisco. PFT didn't mince words when describing Jimmy G’s performance in the clutch.
Jimmy Garoppolo is 'not a dog'
We learned a couple of things today. One Jimmy G, I don't think he's a dog. I, I think we can conclusively say that Jimmy G not a dog. He had a chance at the end of the game on those last two drives... and they had two just terrible, terrible drives at the end.
The Brady Retirement Mystery
Just when the football world was settling in for the games, Adam Schefter dropped a bomb on Saturday claiming Tom Brady was retiring. Then things got weird. Brady’s camp denied it, the Bucs said they hadn't heard anything, and Schefter stood by his scoop. Big Cat thinks even if he is done, he's leaving too much on the table by walking away now.
Tom Brady is leaving two or three high-level years on the table by retiring now
It's crazy to think about that a guy is retiring at 44 from quarterback in the NFL and you can reasonably make the argument that he left two or three years on the table. Like, he probably could have played for two or three more years... he never declined. He literally outlasted the cliff.
Regardless of what happens this week, PFT is convinced that we haven't seen the last of the GOAT on an NFL field, even if he does hang them up for a season or two.
Tom Brady will come out of retirement within five years
I'm just going to assume that Tom Brady could come back at any point in the next like five years. It would not shock me if at his like induction ceremony to the hall of fame, Tom Brady announces that he's coming back to the NFL as he's getting inducted, just to fuck them over for one more year.
Who’s Back of the Week
To wrap things up, the guys looked at the cultural resurgence of Harambe thanks to the Bengals' success. Hank is convinced the Cincinnati legend is back in the mainstream for the next two weeks. Meanwhile, PFT admitted to falling back into an old habit thanks to Jersey Jerry, and Big Cat shared a controversial take on a certain Netflix show that everyone loves to hate-watch.
Emily in Paris is a genius show despite being terrible
Emily in Paris is the worst show ever by the way, never watched it... it is mind-numbingly bad, but it's one of those shows that's so bad. It sucks you in... It's a genius show. It's a genius show and it's terrible. But it's genius.
We'll see everyone in Los Angeles for the Super Bowl.
