Brooks Koepka on PGA Win, Anders Holm on Workaholics, and the Celtics Crisis
Hank is in a dark place. The Celtics didn't just lose game three; they were dismantled by the Heat, and the vibes in Boston are at an all-time low. After Grant Williams decided to poke the bear by getting in Jimmy Butler's face in game two, the series has turned into a total lopsided affair. Big Cat and PFT Commenter are marveling at the resilience of Miami, while PFT is already looking for a scapegoat in the coaching department.
I would fire Joe Mazzulla right now before Game 4
If I were you, Hank, I would want to fire [Joe] Mazzulla right now before Game 4. Get Brad [Stevens] in there.
The conversation turned to the sheer impossibility of the situation for the Celtics. No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit, and the guys aren't exactly optimistic that this current Boston squad has the heart to be the first. While Big Cat is mesmerized by the revival of 'Heat Culture,' PFT isn't buying any Boston comeback narrative.
Boston as a city does not have what it takes to come back from down 3-0
No teams ever come back down from three-oh in the NBA. I don't think Boston as a city has what it takes to come down from three-oh.
Heat Culture is the strongest strain of culture in the world
Heat culture. I know I declared it dead... ever since that moment, I don't think there's been anything stronger in the world than heat culture. It is the strongest strain of culture out there.
Switching gears to a much happier front, Brooks Koepka is officially back. After winning his fifth major at the PGA Championship, Brooks called into the show while actively pounding beers out of the Wanamaker Trophy. Big Cat noted that Brooks has a certain quality that sets him apart from every other golfer on the planet when the lights are the brightest.
Brooks Koepka is the closest player to Tiger Woods in big moments
Obviously Tiger's the greatest... but I think Brooks is the closest to Tiger in terms of big lights showing up. Like the ice in his veins in these big moments. He's just there.
The guys celebrated the win with Brooks, even as PFT threw out a massive prediction about where Koepka's career is heading after this redemption arc. They also discussed the end of the legendary rivalry with Bryson DeChambeau, which seems to have fizzled out now that Brooks is winning majors again.
Brooks Koepka will catch Tiger Woods's major record
Brooks is 10 away from Tiger. I'm gonna be the first to say it. Brooks can catch Tiger Woods's major record.
The Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka rivalry is officially over
The rivalry's over. Bryson [DeChambeau] is not really a threat to Brooks [Koepka] anymore. Bryson won the bubble tournament—those didn't count. It's like the Lakers winning in the bubble.
In the NBA's Western Conference, the Nuggets have the Lakers on the ropes with a 3-0 lead of their own. Big Cat was particularly unimpressed with D'Angelo Russell's performance, while PFT is convinced the league won't let LeBron go out without a fight.
D'Angelo Russell is maybe the worst player ever
Dlo [D'Angelo] Russell is maybe the worst player ever. It's puzzling how bad the Lakers have been.
Lakers Money Line Game 4 is my Game of the Year
I'm gonna do a Game of the Year. Lakers money line game four. It's gotta happen. You know the NBA will not let LeBron James get swept in this series.
Anders Holm joined the show in studio to talk about his new movie, About My Father, and his time working with Robert De Niro. The conversation touched on his swimming background at the University of Wisconsin and the nuances of high-level athletics. Anders explained the science behind 'fast pools' and the different types of swimmers you find at the collegiate level.
Swimmers are split between engine-based athletes and coordinated athletes
You still have two different kinds of athletes. You have athletes who probably could have done another sport... and then you have other people that just have an engine... but they can't jump, they can't run, they can't do anything but that [swim].
Shallow pools are slower because waves bounce off the bottom and slow down the swimmer
If you have a shallow pool, it's not gonna be as fast because if you make waves and they bounce back up off the bottom of the pool at you, that just can slow you down. So you want it to be at least six to eight feet deep.
Before letting him go, Anders shared a hilarious story about trying to convince Jimmy Tatro not to take a network TV gig because he believed Tatro was destined for movie stardom. The interview wrapped with a look back at the Workaholics days and the early YouTube era that paved the way for their success.
Jimmy Tatro shouldn't have taken a network TV job because he is a movie star
I think that you [Jimmy Tatro] are a movie star and I think that this [TV show] will tie you down and you won't have the freedom to do all these things that I think will be banging down your door... I've seen you and stuff. You're a movie star. I am not a movie star. I think this is where I end up. I don't think you end up here.
Whatever happens next, at least we have Brooks drinking beers and Hank considering a soul patch to save his season.
