Monday, May 22, 202320 takes

Brooks Koepka wins the PGA Championship but first the coin has decided to start with the Celtics being dead. Hank is struggling with his new reality as the Heat whomp Boston to go up 3-0 (-). Brooks Koepka wins the PGA Championship and we talk about the tourney, Michael Block, and Brooks being all the way back (-). The Nuggets beat the Lakers and the refs on Saturday and it may be over for Lebron (-). Who's back of the week including cold brew coffee coming for Stella Blue (-). Brooks Koepka calls in drunk while pounding beers out of the trophy and talks to us about how back he is (-). Anders Holm joins us in studio for a great interview about comedy, his new movie About My Father out this weekend, workaholics and his favorite bars in Madison (-). We finish with the lottery ball machine (-)

Brooks Koepka on PGA Win, Anders Holm on Workaholics, and the Celtics Crisis

Hank is in a dark place. The Celtics didn't just lose game three; they were dismantled by the Heat, and the vibes in Boston are at an all-time low. After Grant Williams decided to poke the bear by getting in Jimmy Butler's face in game two, the series has turned into a total lopsided affair. Big Cat and PFT Commenter are marveling at the resilience of Miami, while PFT is already looking for a scapegoat in the coaching department.

I would fire Joe Mazzulla right now before Game 4

If I were you, Hank, I would want to fire [Joe] Mazzulla right now before Game 4. Get Brad [Stevens] in there.

Mazzulla was not fired; he remained the coach and eventually won the 2024 NBA title.

The conversation turned to the sheer impossibility of the situation for the Celtics. No team in NBA history has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit, and the guys aren't exactly optimistic that this current Boston squad has the heart to be the first. While Big Cat is mesmerized by the revival of 'Heat Culture,' PFT isn't buying any Boston comeback narrative.

Boston as a city does not have what it takes to come back from down 3-0

No teams ever come back down from three-oh in the NBA. I don't think Boston as a city has what it takes to come down from three-oh.

The Celtics did force a Game 7 but lost at home, so they did not complete the comeback. No NBA team has ever successfully come back from 3-0.

Heat Culture is the strongest strain of culture in the world

Heat culture. I know I declared it dead... ever since that moment, I don't think there's been anything stronger in the world than heat culture. It is the strongest strain of culture out there.

The Heat made the NBA Finals as an 8th seed, validating the 'strength' of their culture during that run.

Switching gears to a much happier front, Brooks Koepka is officially back. After winning his fifth major at the PGA Championship, Brooks called into the show while actively pounding beers out of the Wanamaker Trophy. Big Cat noted that Brooks has a certain quality that sets him apart from every other golfer on the planet when the lights are the brightest.

Brooks Koepka is the closest player to Tiger Woods in big moments

Obviously Tiger's the greatest... but I think Brooks is the closest to Tiger in terms of big lights showing up. Like the ice in his veins in these big moments. He's just there.

This is subjective, but Koepka's 5th major win put him in elite company as a modern 'big game hunter' in golf.

The guys celebrated the win with Brooks, even as PFT threw out a massive prediction about where Koepka's career is heading after this redemption arc. They also discussed the end of the legendary rivalry with Bryson DeChambeau, which seems to have fizzled out now that Brooks is winning majors again.

Brooks Koepka will catch Tiger Woods's major record

Brooks is 10 away from Tiger. I'm gonna be the first to say it. Brooks can catch Tiger Woods's major record.

Tiger has 15 majors; Brooks has 5. Brooks would need 10 more to tie, which is statistically improbable for a player in his 30s.

The Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka rivalry is officially over

The rivalry's over. Bryson [DeChambeau] is not really a threat to Brooks [Koepka] anymore. Bryson won the bubble tournament—those didn't count. It's like the Lakers winning in the bubble.

The two players largely reconciled after joining LIV Golf and Koepka's major championship dominance surpassed Bryson's at this point.

In the NBA's Western Conference, the Nuggets have the Lakers on the ropes with a 3-0 lead of their own. Big Cat was particularly unimpressed with D'Angelo Russell's performance, while PFT is convinced the league won't let LeBron go out without a fight.

D'Angelo Russell is maybe the worst player ever

Dlo [D'Angelo] Russell is maybe the worst player ever. It's puzzling how bad the Lakers have been.

Russell is objectively an All-Star caliber NBA player, though he had a terrible series.

Lakers Money Line Game 4 is my Game of the Year

I'm gonna do a Game of the Year. Lakers money line game four. It's gotta happen. You know the NBA will not let LeBron James get swept in this series.

The Nuggets swept the Lakers 4-0; the Lakers lost Game 4 113-111.

Anders Holm joined the show in studio to talk about his new movie, About My Father, and his time working with Robert De Niro. The conversation touched on his swimming background at the University of Wisconsin and the nuances of high-level athletics. Anders explained the science behind 'fast pools' and the different types of swimmers you find at the collegiate level.

Swimmers are split between engine-based athletes and coordinated athletes

You still have two different kinds of athletes. You have athletes who probably could have done another sport... and then you have other people that just have an engine... but they can't jump, they can't run, they can't do anything but that [swim].

This is a descriptive observation of athletic types in a niche sport.

Shallow pools are slower because waves bounce off the bottom and slow down the swimmer

If you have a shallow pool, it's not gonna be as fast because if you make waves and they bounce back up off the bottom of the pool at you, that just can slow you down. So you want it to be at least six to eight feet deep.

This is a scientifically recognized phenomenon in competitive swimming regarding wave dissipation and turbulence.

Before letting him go, Anders shared a hilarious story about trying to convince Jimmy Tatro not to take a network TV gig because he believed Tatro was destined for movie stardom. The interview wrapped with a look back at the Workaholics days and the early YouTube era that paved the way for their success.

Jimmy Tatro shouldn't have taken a network TV job because he is a movie star

I think that you [Jimmy Tatro] are a movie star and I think that this [TV show] will tie you down and you won't have the freedom to do all these things that I think will be banging down your door... I've seen you and stuff. You're a movie star. I am not a movie star. I think this is where I end up. I don't think you end up here.

Subjective career advice, though Tatro has continued to find success in both TV and film.

Whatever happens next, at least we have Brooks drinking beers and Hank considering a soul patch to save his season.

The Celtics would not have fired Ime Udoka if they knew how bad Joe Mazzulla would be

If they had known how bad Joe Mazzulla was gonna be and how bad the season would end, they would not have fired Ime [Udoka]. They'd be like, 'Okay, I'm gonna look the other way. He just fucked one person.'

This is a counter-factual opinion that can't be proven, but reflects the intense heat on Mazzulla after Game 3.

You play golf better when you're hungover

That just backs up, I think what a lot of us already know, which is you play golf better when you're hungover. Because you're like, get me the fuck out of the sun. I wanna get home. So you play faster.

Inherently subjective and largely a comedic observation.

The Ryder Cup should use a format that pits LIV players against PGA Tour players

If they did a Ryder Cup but it was a format where it was LIV guys against PGA guys... lean into it. Have it be like WCW getting into a ladder match against all of WWF.

The Ryder Cup remained a traditional Europe vs. USA format, though LIV players like Brooks Koepka eventually made the team.

Jimmy Butler has photographic memory for taunts and celebrations

I think Jimmy Butler might have photographic memory because his reverse celebrations when he taunts somebody back in the same way that they've taunted him are too perfect. He did the timeout thing that Al Horford did—even got down on the exact same knee.

This is a subjective observation of Butler's hyper-competitive personality.

If a person doesn't have hobbies, all there is is work. I think work-life balance is good, but you know, a work-work balance works too.

This is a philosophical opinion on lifestyle.

Antonio Brown will dominate the Arena Football League

I think [Antonio Brown] will probably dominate them if I had to guess. He was in the league, what, two years ago? He won a Super Bowl three years ago.

Antonio Brown never actually played for the Albany Empire; the team was eventually kicked out of the league due to financial issues.

I could finish an Olympic distance triathlon with no training

I could probably do that [Olympic distance triathlon] and just die... but I could do that. No problem. Easy.

Big Cat has not attempted this, and given his fitness level at the time, 'finishing' is highly debatable.

If you say that you're dumb all the time, you can never actually be wrong because you never put out the pretense of you being right.

This is a logical and philosophical stance on public persona.

Orcas will be a major problem for humans in the future

Orcas have been attacking boats off the coast of Spain recently and been training other orcas to do it too. There's gonna be an orca human problem for the future.

While orca interactions with boats have increased, 'orca human problem' as a systemic threat is speculative.
