Andy Staples on CFB Chaos, Hank’s Lighthouse PowerPoint, and Andrew Beck
The Monday Night Football doubleheader left everyone talking about one thing: the Tush Push. While the haters are crying for a ban, Big Cat and PFT are standing firm on the side of man football. PFT thinks the burden is on the defense to actually show up and stop Jalen Hurts from squatting a semi-truck into the end zone.
The NFL should not ban the 'tush push' play
I love the tush push. I think if you don't like it, then stop it. Figure out a way to stop it until then. If you don't like it, you can either try to figure out how to make teams stop doing it to you or do it yourself.
Big Cat isn't even convinced a ban would change the outcome. The Eagles' offensive line is so dominant that Jalen Hurts would probably find a way to fall forward for a yard regardless of who is shoving him from behind.
The Eagles would still be 97% successful on the QB sneak even if the 'tush push' were banned
I actually think that if they ban this play, I think the Eagles will still do it. And it will go from like 99% success to like 97% success... 90% of the time [Jalen Hurts] is getting those yards himself.
This all sets up a massive collision of identities in a few weeks when the smash-mouth Eagles meet the track-star Miami Dolphins.
The Eagles vs. Dolphins game on October 22nd will be the ultimate clash of football styles
I would love to see that matchup though. The Dolphins against the Eagles—two distinct styles of offense. [The Eagles] tush pushing all over the place... the best offense right now in football is a team that plays with everyone out wide in the Miami Dolphins.
The Lighthouse Trial
Hank finally brought his long-awaited PowerPoint to the floor to defend the honor of the New England Patriots and their new stadium addition. He spent a significant amount of time trying to prove that a small stream known as the Neponset River qualifies as a federal waterway, which would legally make the structure a real lighthouse.
The Gillette Stadium structure is the largest lighthouse in the continental U.S.
The Patriots built the largest Lighthouse in continental us. It was, you know, discussed, promoted... Let's make the biggest Lighthouse in the continental US Asterisk. No big deal.
Hank’s presentation was immediately derailed by accusations of using AI-generated images and stock renderings from 2021. PFT brought in the big guns, citing a United States Coast Guard commander to debunk Hank's claims, while Jake pointed out that the stadium in Hank's photo was filled with fans during a time when the real team was playing in a rainstorm. The saga continues, but the credibility of Hank's "sources" is at an all-time low.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
PFT is keeping a close eye on the future of the sport as Tiger’s son begins his ascent. After Charlie Woods secured another tournament win, the projections are already getting out of hand.
Charlie Woods is on pace to win 40 majors
Charlie Woods just won a tournament. Charlie won a tournament... right now he's on pace to win 40 Majors, which is pretty incredible.
Big Cat moved over to the NFL for a different kind of retirement projection. Tyreek Hill apparently has some very specific plans for his post-football career that involve a different kind of film study.
Tyreek Hill will become a porn star after he retires from the NFL
Tyreek Hill... came out today and said that when he retires he wants to just kind of get outta the limelight and enjoys retirement in peace and also be a porn star. I would watch.
Andy Staples in Studio
College football is currently a beautiful mess of aggrieved coaches and high-stakes wrestling promos. Andy Staples stopped by to break down why everyone is so mad, from Ryan Day’s war with Lou Holtz to Dan Lanning’s clinical takedown of Colorado. After the early season panic, Andy is buying back in on Nick Saban's squad now that the quarterback room has some stability.
Alabama will win the SEC West now that they have committed to Jalen Milroe
Alabama, we buried Alabama. Unfortunately for us, we didn't look at the schedule because they are gonna win the SEC west... now that they've decided on Jalen Milroe as their quarterback and they're actually building an offense around him running plays that work for him.
It isn't just Alabama making moves in the South. Andy is officially a believer in Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns, specifically because they finally have the NFL-caliber "big people" on the lines that have been missing for over a decade.
Texas is a legitimate National Title contender because of their improved line play
Texas... I think they're very good now. I think they're legitimate college football playoff legit. The difference with Texas this year versus Texas really since 2009 is there are legitimate NFL players on both sides of the line of scrimmage... they've developed them and these dudes can play.
We also checked in on the "Miami is Back" meter. According to Andy, Mario Cristobal has successfully rebuilt the trenches to the point where the Hurricanes are no longer the soft team that got bullied last season.
Miami is 'back' as a 10-win caliber team this year
Miami... Mario Cristobal was singing the praises [of his O-line]. And then you saw 'em against A&M and they protected Tyler Van Dyke very well... I'm thinking maybe Miami's pretty good. I don't think they're that team [from last year] anymore.
Looking ahead to the NFL Draft, the guys looked at the Caleb Williams sweepstakes. Andy compared the USC star to the most polished prospects we've seen in recent memory, noting that his "magic" is perfectly suited for the pro game.
Caleb Williams is the most 'can't-miss' QB prospect since Andrew Luck
Caleb Williams is the most can't miss since Trevor Lawrence or Andrew Luck... Because the man makes magic. Mahomes-esque. Very, very similar. Different arm angles that sort of thing.
Big Cat, ever the hopeful Bears fan, proposed a strategy that would involve Chicago taking both elite QBs available just to be safe.
The Bears should draft both Caleb Williams and Drake May and have them compete
We should draft both. Draft both and have a competition... I'm saying that, run two quarterbacks in the same offense. Do the old Lloyd Carr, just switch back and forth.
One Question with a Fullback
Texans fullback Andrew Beck joined the show to discuss his historic kickoff return touchdown. At 255 pounds, Beck is the heaviest player in decades to take it to the house. He admitted his primary thought while crossing the goal line was sheer panic about having to run back out and cover the ensuing kickoff while he was still gassing. As a true specialist, he gave his professional seal of approval to the Eagles' favorite short-yardage play.
The 'tush push' feels like gladiator-style football and should be run every play
I'm here for it. It's such a cool play to watch. It's like major rugby vibes, like the scrum... It's like old school gladiator style man. They should do it every play. Average three or four yards per carry... bleed the clock, like a 12 minute drive.
If the NFL actually listens to the fun police and bans the push, at least we'll always have the memories of 250-pound men flying into scrums like Roman gladiators.
Don't let the Lighthouse propaganda win.
