Tuesday, September 6, 202215 takes

College Football is all the way back. We recap a crazy 5 days of College Football to kick off the season. UNC/App State, Georgia throttling Oregon and more (-). Who's back of the week including a deep dive into Brendan Fraser's career plus Harry Styles spit on Chris Pine (-). Our good friend Tom Fornelli joins the show to recap a crazy Week 1 of College Football, 12 game playoff and more (-). We then do the Mt Rushmore of Italians (-). We finish with the return of Football Guy of the Week(-).

Tom Fornelli on Week 1 Mayhem, 12-Team Playoff, and Italians

Football is officially back, and the first full weekend of the college slate delivered everything we crave. Big Cat and PFT opened the show still buzzing from five straight days of wall-to-wall action, from the Backyard Brawl on Thursday night all the way to the absolute chaos of LSU and Florida State in New Orleans. Big Cat was so locked in that he's already looking to expand the calendar next year.

The college football season should start in July

They should start college football season in fucking July because it was like, I just... It was so fun watching just wall to wall college football.

This is a subjective opinion on scheduling, but the CFB season has notably not moved to July.

While the games were great, the coaching performances were... varied. Brian Kelly’s debut at LSU was a special kind of disaster, highlighted by muffed punts and a blocked extra point that had PFT ready to fire up the moving trucks despite the massive contract involved.

LSU should pay the $80M+ buyout to fire Brian Kelly immediately

It would be somewhere between $75 and $85 million right now to buy out Brian Kelly. I say, go for it, go for it right now. You're just throwing good money after bad.

Brian Kelly was not fired; he stayed at LSU and led them to a 10-win season in 2022, proving the immediate firing would have been a massive mistake.

North Carolina also provided some unintentional comedy, giving up a staggering 40 points in the fourth quarter to App State. Big Cat thinks the Gene Chizik experiment in Chapel Hill might already be reaching its expiration date after they made an App State comeback look like a video game on rookie difficulty.

Gene Chizik should be fired as North Carolina's defensive coordinator

Gene Chizik, like what? He, I don't even know. I, you have to fire him. The fact that it happened [giving up 40 in a quarter] and then the next day Jackson state... shut down [FAMU] and like UNC gave up 24 points to them.

Chizik was not fired immediately but did eventually leave the program after the 2023 season due to poor defensive performance.

Georgia's Statement and the Heisman Race

Friend of the program Tom Fornelli joined the show to help make sense of the carnage. The biggest takeaway from the weekend was Georgia essentially treating Oregon like a high school junior varsity team. While everyone spent the offseason wondering if the Bulldogs would take a step back after losing a historic amount of talent to the NFL, Tom thinks the opposite happened.

Georgia is better than they were last year

I think Georgia is better than last year's team. I came into this season, thinking Alabama and Ohio State, one of them is going to win the national title... After what I saw on Saturday, I suddenly think that Georgia's probably right up there with those two.

Georgia finished the season 15-0, winning the National Championship in a 65-7 blowout. They were statistically and result-wise superior to the 2021 team.

Stetson Bennett looked like a totally different player, carving up the Ducks with ease. Big Cat is finally ready to stop the Stetson slander and see what the Mailman can do at the next level.

Stetson Bennett would be great on a good NFL team

I'm kind of kind of thinking Stetson Bennett. It might be a pro, even though he's got like the best team around him, he, he looked awesome. Put him on a really good NFL team, then he'll be great.

Stetson Bennett has not been given a real opportunity on a good NFL team. The take remains unverifiable.

Tom and the guys also looked ahead to the Heisman race. While Anthony Richardson became a cult hero overnight in Gainesville, the heavy hitters in Columbus and Tuscaloosa still look like the safest bets to be standing in New York in December.

Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud are the two best quarterbacks in the country

I think [C.J. Stroud] and Bryce Young are the two best quarterbacks in the country. I think that they will be Heisman finalists.

Both players were Heisman finalists in 2022 and were the top two picks in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Who's Back and Trending

In a packed Who's Back of the Week, the guys covered everything from Brendan Fraser's seven-minute standing ovation at Cannes to the bizarre Harry Styles and Chris Pine spitting rumors. Big Ben is also back, unfortunately, launching a new podcast called "Footbahling." PFT has a very specific vision for what that show is going to sound like once the former Steelers QB starts reminiscing.

Big Ben's podcast will devolve into him ranking the injuries he's played through

I'm sure that it's just gonna devolve into [Ben Roethlisberger] talking about various injuries. It should just be him talking about, I ranking the injuries that he's played through.

His podcast 'Footbahlin' focuses more on football and beer than just his injuries, though he does recap his career.

We also touched on the rumors surrounding Tom Brady and Gisele. While the gossip magazines are obsessed with the drama, Big Cat only sees one possible motivation for Brady to keep playing.

Tom Brady will win Gisele back by winning another Super Bowl

I think you have to take the Bucs for the season because if we know anything about Tom Brady, he's like, I'm gonna win her back by winning another Super Bowl.

PredictionFootballHotSarcastic
Brady did not win the Super Bowl (lost in the Wild Card), and the couple officially divorced shortly after.

The Italian Mount Rushmore

To close out Mount Rushmore season, we brought in the heavy hitter. Tom Fornelli joined Hank for the Mount Rushmore of Italians, taking on Big Cat and PFT in a battle for cultural supremacy. The draft featured everything from Julius Caesar to Mike the Situation, though team Hank and Tom took a strategic turn with the first overall pick by selecting a man who checks every single Italian box: Mike Tirico.

We wrapped things up with the return of Football Guy of the Week, featuring Sam Pittman’s "old and cold" Coors Lights and a high schooler leveling a returner without a helmet. To top it off, Big Cat caught a glimpse of the future during the Clemson mop-up duty and he's already booking the flight to Canton.

Clemson freshman Cade Klubnik is a future Hall of Famer after seeing just five passes

This kid for Clemson [Cade Klubnik] is a future Hall of Famer... I've seen five passes from him. Hall of Famer, talking gold jacket folks. Where were you when we said this?

Hot TakeCFBScorchingSarcastic
It is far too early to judge a Hall of Fame career, but Klubnik's initial tenure at Clemson has been up and down, making this look like an extreme overreaction.

It’s time to start preparing your liver for NFL Sunday. One down, seventeen to go.

Cincinnati proved they still belong in the top tier of college football despite losing to Arkansas

I actually think that Cincinnati's loss to Arkansas is better for Cincinnati. Like it proved that they still kind of belong... I think they're still very good. I think that they're like a top 20 team.

Cincinnati finished the 2022 season 9-4 and unranked in the final AP Poll, suggesting they didn't quite maintain their 'top tier' status from the previous year.

Serena Williams is definitely not retired

I'd just like to call my shot real quick. She's not, she's not retired. Yeah, definitely not retired. She is not retired.

Despite some teasing, Serena has remained retired from professional tennis since the 2022 US Open.

LSU and Florida State are both just mediocre 7-5 or 8-4 teams

Neither of those teams is very good. Like LSU is gonna be seven and five, Florida State's gonna be seven and five, maybe eight and four in the ACC.

LSU went 10-4 and won the SEC West. FSU went 10-3. Both teams far exceeded Fornelli's prediction.

Florida is a sleeper to be the second-best team in the SEC East over Tennessee and Kentucky

I feel like people are a little too easily hyping up Tennessee and Kentucky in the off season as like the second best team in the SEC east. I think Florida's very much in play to be that team.

This was very incorrect. Tennessee finished 11-2 (ranked 6th) and Kentucky finished 7-6. Florida finished 6-7 and 5th in the SEC East.

Oklahoma is my dark horse to make the College Football Playoff

I have Oklahoma as my dark horse 1-4 because everyone... write [Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama] in... but what do you think about Oklahoma?

Oklahoma went 6-7, finishing with their first losing record since 1998. They were nowhere near the playoff.

Drake Maye is an upgrade over Sam Howell

I think Drake Maye, their new quarterback, is really good... I think that he's just, he's probably an upgrade over Sam Howell, no offense. I know that he's with your Commanders now, but I think that they've got a better quarterback now.

Maye had an incredible 2022 season, throwing for over 4,300 yards and 38 TDs, largely considered a superior collegiate performance to Howell's final year.
