Andy Staples on CFB Preview and Mount Rushmore of Mistakes

Real football has finally arrived, and the energy in the studio is peak Week 1. Hank spent the better part of the opening segment frantically drafting his fantasy team while Big Cat and PFT tried to offer guidance, mostly centered around picking players based on how funny their names are or their proximity to Case Keenum's arm.

Case Keenum will throw a shitload of touchdown passes to Demaryius Thomas this season

I would take Demarius. Yeah, take Demarius. In case Keenum's going to throw him a shitload of touchdown passes.

Keenum struggled in Denver with only 18 TDs to 15 INTs, and Thomas was traded to the Texans mid-season after catching only 3 TDs for the Broncos.

Before getting into the meat of the college slate, the guys addressed the massive bag the Packers just handed Aaron Rodgers. While the numbers are staggering, PFT isn't exactly ready to crown him the greatest to ever do it. In fact, he’s ready to invoke a specific rule regarding Rodgers' hardware.

Aaron Rodgers has not won a Super Bowl because of the eight-year statute of limitations

Aaron Rodgers hasn't won a Super Bowl. He won it too early in his career for it to count for people to remember. I actually agree with that take. I think that there's like an eight-year statute of limitations where I get to forget about your Super Bowl.

Literally incorrect as Rodgers has a ring from SB XLV, but a subjective 'PFT law'.

Speaking of quarterbacks with complicated legacies, Big Cat admitted to a massive shift in his thinking regarding the Lions' signal-caller. He’s putting his pride aside to admit that despite the win-loss record against winning teams, the Hall of Fame is inevitable.

Matthew Stafford stinks as a quarterback, but he is going to be a Hall of Famer

I've stopped my Matthew Stafford slander. He's going to go in the Hall of Fame. You ready for that? Look at his stats. The pendulum has swung the other way. It sucks that I'm admitting it. Matthew Stafford, if you look at his statistics and if he keeps playing for as long as he's going to be, he's going to be a Hall of Famer. He stinks as a quarterback, but he's going to be in the Hall of Fame.

Stafford has since moved into the top 10 all-time for passing yards and TDs and won a Super Bowl, making him a likely Hall of Famer.

Mount Rushmore of Mistakes

With Mount Rushmore season coming to a close, the guys tackled a topic that hits close to home for anyone who has ever had a Friday night get away from them. Hank led things off by targeting the tragedy of not hydrating before a night of drinking, while PFT went with the classic historical blunder of invading Russia in the winter.

Big Cat took aim at family planning, specifically pointing out that if your sibling is six years older than you, you were definitely a "surprise" that ruined your parents' retirement plans. Other notable entries included the Titanic, the Cleveland Browns firing Bill Belichick, and Pete Carroll's refusal to just give the ball to Marshawn Lynch at the goal line.

College Football Preview with Andy Staples

SI's Andy Staples joined the show to help navigate a landscape that feels like it’s being dominated by a few Goliaths. He isn't high on Alabama just coasting through, mostly because he sees a certain neighbor in the SEC East finally reaching the same tier of talent and depth.

Georgia is becoming the new Alabama

I think Georgia is becoming the new Alabama. And I actually filmed a video where I say, I think Georgia's going to win the SEC this year. Because I think Georgia, by the end of this season, they have to replace so many guys that you know. But the thing is... the guys they have coming in might eventually be better.

While Alabama won the SEC in 2018, Staples' long-term vision of Georgia becoming the dominant power of the sport came true.

Staples also shed some light on the quarterback battles at the top of the rankings. While Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney are juggling high-upside freshmen against steady veterans, Staples believes Clemson has the ultimate edge this year.

Clemson will win the National Championship

National champion, Clemson. I think they wind up going with [Trevor] Lawrence... if the guys are equal again, you're going to go with the higher ceiling guy.

Clemson won the 2018 National Championship and Lawrence became the star.

One of the most interesting dark horses discussed was LSU. While the media is ready to bury Coach O, Staples thinks the Tigers finally found the missing piece of the puzzle via the transfer portal from Ohio State.

LSU finally has a legitimate starting quarterback in Joe Burrow

I think LSU has a quarterback now. Because the Ohio State coaches and Ohio State players, I don't think they were blowing smoke when they said Burrow was fairly close to Haskins... This dude could start most places. And if Burrow is pretty good, well, guess what? It's a totally different end.

Joe Burrow became arguably the greatest college QB ever at LSU, winning a Natty and Heisman in 2019.

LSU will beat Miami in the season opener

I still, with the pass rush that LSU should be able to generate, I like LSU in that game [against Miami].

LSU beat Miami 33-17 on September 2, 2018.

Beyond the playoff hunt, the guys looked at the "Littyville" era of Illinois, the sheer entertainment value of Herm Edwards at Arizona State, and the absolute lock that is West Virginia's offensive firepower.

The over on West Virginia's 7.5 win total is a lock

West Virginia, their over-under is 7.5. Oh, wow. I want to hammer that... Will Grier is maybe the best quarterback in the country... They're going to put up sick numbers on offense.

West Virginia won 8 games in the regular season, so the over 7.5 hit.

Big Cat and Staples also agreed that while Lane Kiffin is currently turning FAU into a Group of Five powerhouse, he won't be in Boca Raton for long.

Lane Kiffin will eventually return to the Power 5 and the NFL

I would bet a good amount of money that Lane Kiffin will coach not only a Power 5 team at some point in the rest of his career, but also probably in the NFL. He'll probably go around again.

Kiffin returned to the Power 5 with Ole Miss in 2020. He has not returned to the NFL as a head coach as of 2024.

Segments and Final Thoughts

The show wrapped with a flurry of activity including Talking Soccer, where PFT highlighted the President's recent commentary on the sport. PFT managed to find the silver lining in the USMNT's recent struggles by looking at the calendar since the last World Cup cycle.

The United States is on its longest World Cup unbeaten streak since the Reagan administration

This is the longest World Cup unbeaten streak that we're on right now since the Reagan administration. It's been over four years since the United States has lost a World Cup game.

Fact ClaimSoccerMediumSarcastic
The US last lost a WC game in July 2014 to Belgium. Since they didn't qualify in 2018, they remained 'unbeaten' by default for over four years. It is factually true but contextually absurd.

We also got a Jalen Ramsey Word Association segment following his latest scorched-earth interview. The guys found themselves agreeing with Ramsey’s assessment of Danny Amendola's career arc while also backing his confidence in the Jags' offense.

Danny Amendola only got his contract because of Tom Brady

He said Danny Amendola sucked, and the only reason he got his contract was because of Tom Brady. [PFT]: That's kind of true. Sounds like he [Ramsey] has done his homework on most of these here.

Amendola's production significantly dropped after leaving the Patriots, though 'sucked' is a subjective descriptor for a reliable slot receiver.

The Jaguars can win a Super Bowl with Blake Bortles

He also said that the Jacksonville Jaguars can win a Super Bowl with Blake Bortles. Facts only. He [Jalen Ramsey] knows what he's talking about.

PredictionFootballFireSarcastic
Bortles was benched later that season and the Jags finished 5-11. He never won a Super Bowl.

Set your jaw and get ready for a weekend of triple-option football and terrible bets.

Stephon Diggs is going to be very good this year

Stephon Diggs is going to be good. You can't go wrong. Demarius [Thomas] is going to split him with Thielen, so go with [Diggs].

Diggs had 1,021 yards and 9 TDs in 2018, finishing as a top WR.

I like Kenyon Drake a lot for the 2018 season

I like Kenyon Drake a lot this year. I like Alex Collins. Take Kenyon.

Drake had a decent 2018 with over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and 9 total touchdowns, but he didn't quite reach 'league winner' status and was famously traded the following season.

Michigan is going to be very good this year

I think Michigan is going to be very good this year. I've come all the way around. I love Jim Harbaugh, and their defense is going to be so good.

Michigan finished #14 in the AP Poll with 10 wins, meeting the 'very good' criteria for most, despite the usual big-game struggles.

Chris Carson is going to be a top-five running back in the NFL this year

Chris Carson's going to be a top five running back in the NFL this year. You're welcome.

Carson finished 7th in rushing yards but wasn't a consensus top 5 back across metrics or fantasy.

FAU has the most talented roster ever seen at the Group of Five level

Lane Kiffin... this is as talented a team at that level [FAU] that you're ever going to see. Now, chemistry-wise, it'll be a miracle if he can get everybody to play together.

While talented, the 2018 FAU team underwhelmed, finishing 5-7. It's difficult to call them the most talented G5 roster ever given the lack of results compared to teams like 2017 UCF or Boise State eras.

All right, Final Four. Wisconsin, Washington, Clemson, Georgia.

The actual 2018 CFP field was Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma. Staples only got 1 of 4 correct.

Evanston at 11:00 AM is the hardest place to play in college football

The hardest place to play in the entire college football landscape at 11 a.m. Oh, no doubt. Evanston, Illinois, 11 a.m., no one wants to be there. Everyone is sleeping. Half the kids played in bigger stadiums in high school with more fans in them. It just puts them to sleep.

Inherently subjective take on home-field advantage factors.
