Brandon Staley on Chargers Culture, Tom Wilson Chaos, and Fyre Fest
Big Cat and PFT are sorting through the aftermath of the Tom Wilson fight night at Madison Square Garden. PFT was in the building to witness Wilson basically taking on the entire New York Rangers roster by himself, a scene that highlighted the absolute lack of deterrents in the modern NHL. With the classic goon being phased out of the game, there is nobody left to check a guy like Wilson.
Tom Wilson is the NHL's apex predator because goons are extinct; the Rangers shouldn't even fight him if they know they can't win
The problem is the NHL not having, they basically got like the goon, the goon is extinct in the NHL... Therefore, Tom Wilson is the toughest guy in the world and he beat the entire New York Rangers roster. And I think, I actually think for the Rangers, like if you go into that game knowing you can't beat up Tom Wilson, don't even fight him.
PFT took it a step further, suggesting that the raw productivity seen on the ice could actually be applied to the corporate world. If you want a more efficient morning at the office, you might just need to throw hands with a coworker before the first coffee break.
Healthy workplaces should allow fighting to increase productivity
I think that healthy workplaces should allow fighting. Like if you get into a fight, if you know that fisticuffs are on the table and you can fight in the first 30 minutes of your Workday, you'll probably end up having more productive day after that, you're going to get all your frustration out.
While Rangers fans are calling for heads to roll, Big Cat pointed out that the NHL actually played this perfectly from a marketing perspective. By handing out a measly $5,000 fine, they ensured that every sports talk show in the country would be talking about hockey for a full week leading into the playoffs.
The NHL's tiny fine for Tom Wilson was a genius move to keep people talking about hockey
I appreciate the NHL. Now giving us more of a, like, if you want to get real woke the NHL only giving them a $5,000 fine was the greatest thing they've ever done because it kept the story going and having people talk about the NHL before the playoffs for another week.
Chargers HC Brandon Staley
Brandon Staley joined the show to discuss his meteoric rise from John Carroll University to becoming the head coach of the LA Chargers in just five years. He walked Big Cat and PFT through his "competitive casual" philosophy and why he values the three phases of the game so highly. When the guys pressed him on late-game situations, specifically the analytics of scoring a touchdown while down 14, Staley didn't hesitate to side with the numbers.
When down 14 and scoring a touchdown, analytics and the desire to win in regulation dictate you should go for two
All the analysts would tell you to do it. [Go for two when down 14]... I think that one thing that I've learned guys... winning the game in regulation. Because there's that, hey, play for a tie or, hey, we want to win this game in regulation. I think there's that movement that I think more people are aware of now.
The conversation shifted to the defensive side of the ball, where Staley has coached some of the premier talents in the league like Khalil Mack and Aaron Donald. He explained that having a superstar isn't just about letting them "ball," but about strategically isolating them to create the best possible opportunities. He also looked back at his time in Chicago, noting how dominant Mack truly was during that 2018 run.
Khalil Mack would have been DPOY in 2018 if he hadn't missed two games
Ramsey was first team all pro last year and had his best year... Kahleel a D [Aaron Donald]... I think, you know, the year we were together, guys in 18 [Khalil Mack] probably would have been the player of the year he had had, he had had he not missed those two games.
Before letting him go, Big Cat had to warn Staley about the potential pitfalls of Justin Herbert's aesthetic. While the hair is iconic, the history of the league suggests that flowing locks might be a curse when it comes to the big game.
No long-hair quarterback has ever won a Super Bowl
We've come across a little bit of a theory that no Longhair quarterback has ever won a super bowl. So you might want to just get in front of that right away.
NFL Rumors and MLB Rule Changes
Adam Schefter dropped a bomb regarding the Aaron Rodgers drama, admitting he basically sat on the information until Draft Day for maximum impact. This led to a debate about journalism ethics with Jake Marsh, who stuck to his Syracuse roots regarding the importance of accuracy over speed.
It is always better for a journalist to be right than to be first
The one thing you do teach you is you always, it's always better to be right than be first.
With Rodgers potentially out in Green Bay, the name Blake Bortles has surfaced as a potential replacement. PFT is fully on board with the BOAT heading to the frozen tundra, noting that the league is simply more entertaining when Blake is active and throwing heaters.
The NFL is a better league when Blake Bortles is in it
I want Blake to do well. And the NFL is a better league when Blake Bortles is in it fact, if it happens to be in green bay and if you happen to just sort of ball out for the next 16 years, I think that's wonderful for everybody.
Big Cat also gave his stamp of approval to the new MLB extra-innings rules. While traditionalists hate the "ghost runner" on second base, Big Cat is a fan of anything that prevents a Tuesday night game from stretching into the 16th inning.
I like seven-inning doubleheaders and the extra-innings runner on second base rule
I liked the seven inning game. I liked the new rule of starting on second. I know that a lot of people don't like it. I think it's better just because there's nothing more than games going like 16 innings.
Fyre Fest of the Week
Hank's Fyre Fest is a potentially season-ending injury. He managed to break his foot after getting "worked up" and kicking a cooler during a ping-pong match. He's currently sitting in a chair hoping he won't need an amputation, while the rest of the room remains skeptical about his recovery time.
PFT is feeling the "Team of Destiny" vibes for the Washington Capitals, specifically following TJ Oshie's emotional hat trick following the passing of his father.
The Washington Capitals are going to be 'Team of Destiny' because TJ Oshie is playing through the loss of his father
I'm starting to get team of destiny vibes from the Washington Capitals because... TJ Oshie scored a hat trick on the day that his dad passed away. I've loved the guy ever since then... in America, Captain America, I'm starting to get team of destiny vibes.
Finally, the quest for 500,000 YouTube subscribers continues, though Big Cat remains pessimistic about the audience's ability to transition from listeners to viewers.
The PMT YouTube channel will not hit 500,000 subscribers by August 15th because listeners don't have it in them to watch
The listeners don't have it in them. Yeah. They don't have it in them. We're not going to hit 500,000. We're not gonna be able to do the live stream. They're listeners. They're not watching.
Now we just need to see if Staley actually brings back Boltman for the home opener.
