Charissa Thompson, 4X World Series Champ Bruce Bochy, CFB And The Bills Are In Trouble

Wednesday, November 15, 202327 takes

The Bills are broken. We talk MNF and the resurgence of Russell Wilson (-). College Football talk, Harbaugh remains the best quote, Jimbo fired, Jayden Daniels Heisman and getting JMU into a bowl game (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne including Hank’s final lighthouse report asking what exactly is real? And the Waterdogs are in Philly (-). Charissa Thompson joins us in studio to talk football, TNF, her career in broadcasting, blocking out the haters and more (-). Texas Rangers Manager Bruce Bochy joins the show to talk about the World Series Run, managing baseball, Tim Lincecum, his love of baseball and more (-). We finish with guys on chicks (-).

Charissa Thompson on TNF, Bruce Bochy’s World Series, and the Bills are Dead

The Buffalo Bills are officially in crisis mode after a disastrous Monday Night loss to the Broncos. Between the 12-man penalty and firing Ken Dorsey mid-season, the vibes in Orchard Park have hit rock bottom. Big Cat and PFT aren't pulling any punches about where this team is headed.

The Buffalo Bills stink and will not make the playoffs this year

The Buffalo Bills stink. They might be dead... I don't think they're gonna be in the playoffs. They have a really tough schedule. They're five and five...

The Bills finished the season 11-6, won the AFC East, and made the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

PFT is ready to weld the window shut for good.

The Buffalo Bills' championship window is officially closed

You gotta talk window. That's closed. I think they're about to jump out of the window.

The Bills went on a 5-game winning streak to end the season and remained a top-tier contender throughout the playoffs.

While Josh Allen gets a lot of the blame for his turnover problem, the coaching staff isn't helping. Big Cat specifically called out the benching of James Cook for an early fumble and the overall lack of awareness on high-leverage downs.

Any offensive coordinator who calls a shotgun play on 4th and 1 should be fired immediately

The fourth and one shotgun... why? Any team that's in fourth and one and goes shotgun should the OC should be fired right away. I hate that. You have to get one yard and you're like, 'now let's get seven yards.' It's crazy. It's crazy.

This is a philosophical football debate, though many analytics and 'old school' fans alike agree that shotgun on 4th and 1 is counter-productive.

Michigan’s Adversity and Jimbo’s Buyout

College football is in a state of absolute chaos. Jim Harbaugh is out here calling Michigan "America's Team" while comparing himself to an iron wall that shatters viruses. It is peak football guy behavior. Big Cat thinks the Big 10 completely fumbled the suspension by rushing into it without due process, especially when you consider the financial stakes.

The Big 10 should give Michigan and Ohio State special treatment because they are the conference's 'breadwinners'

Life is not fair. If you're Tony Petitti, this is different. If it was Rutgers, if it was Purdue, if it was Wisconsin, yes. That's different than Michigan... Michigan and Ohio State are different than the rest of the Big 10. And you need to treat them like they are different... you have to prop up your big time breadwinners.

This is a matter of sports business philosophy; the Big 10 ultimately chose to penalize Michigan despite their 'breadwinner' status.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M finally pulled the trigger on Jimbo Fisher, handing him a buyout so large he should probably disappear to a private island for the rest of his life. Despite the massive resources in College Station, Big Cat is convinced that the job itself is a curse.

The Texas A&M head coaching position is the worst job in college football

I don't know what Texas A&M does now, because I think that might be the worst job in college football... the expectation is they're so crazy... you have to take that job knowing you're gonna get paid a lot of money and you're probably gonna fail because... the bar that they want to be at is so disconnected from where they are.

Subjective opinion on job quality; Mike Elko was subsequently hired and the expectations remain high.

On a more positive note, the Heisman race is heating up, and it’s time to stop penalizing players for having bad defenses. Jayden Daniels is doing things at LSU that we haven't seen since the Joe Burrow days.

Jayden Daniels should win the Heisman Trophy

Jayden Daniels should be the Heisman... He's the best player in college football this year. And that's what the award should be. It shouldn't be a team award.

Jayden Daniels won the Heisman Trophy in December 2023.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne: Lighthouse Truthers

Hank finally delivered his lighthouse presentation, and it was as metaphysical as we expected. Instead of proving the Gillette Stadium lighthouse is "real" by maritime standards, he questioned the very nature of reality.

Void

The Gillette Stadium lighthouse is real as a symbol and a beacon of hope

Technically by definition, some would say that this lighthouse is not real. But there's some that would say that it is real... Just because PFT says this lighthouse isn't real, it doesn't mean you can't, it doesn't have to be real to you and as a region... Patriots fans, new Englanders, they'll recognize this lighthouse as a real thing, as a beacon of hope and as a symbol of our team.

Hank is making a philosophical point to avoid losing a bet/argument about the lighthouse's legitimacy as a functional maritime structure.

PFT also introduced a new theory about the NHL's brightest star, suggesting that a fourth head coach firing for the Oilers points to one common denominator.

Connor McDavid is a 'coach killer'

Is Connor McDavid a coach killer? Big Cat, 'cause this is coach number four I think for him... I'm gonna say that he's a coach killer. Just because it's fun and I have no idea if it's true or not, but it's always good to just slap that label on a really good player.

Edmonton did change coaches frequently during McDavid's tenure, though team success followed this specific change.

Charissa Thompson and Bruce Bochy

Our friend Charissa Thompson joined the show in studio to talk about the transition to Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime and the fun of working with a panel of absolute characters. She was incredibly candid about her early career and the tricks of the trade as a sideline reporter.

I used to make up sideline reports if a coach wouldn't give me anything at halftime

I would make up the report sometimes because A, the coach wouldn't come out at halftime or it was too late and I was like, I didn't wanna screw up the report. So I was like, I'm just gonna make this up because first of all, no coach is gonna get mad if I say, Hey we need to kill, stop hurting ourselves. We need to be better on third down.

Thompson confirmed she did this, sparking a major media ethics debate.

She also touched on her friendship with Ryan Russillo and the recurring rumors that they should end up together. PFT, naturally, had some thoughts on how Russillo would handle a prison stint.

Ryan Russillo would be great in prison as long as he has League Pass and weights

I actually think that [Ryan] Russillo would be great in prison. He would love... think about it because he doesn't really go outside that much. As long as prison had League Pass and weights... so you just work out, eat, and then watch basketball all day.

Purely a comedic character assessment that cannot be verified without Russillo actually going to prison.

Finally, the guys spoke with 4x World Series champion Bruce Bochy. Coming out of retirement to win a title in year one with the Rangers is an all-time move. Bochy talked about the mentality of Nathan Eovaldi and why the new rules in baseball are actually making the game better for everyone.

The MLB pitch clock has significantly improved the game for everyone

The biggest is the clock, no question about it. And I, I think it has really worked out well. I love it personally. Keeps the game moving action. They took the shift away. So I think it's a better game. No doubt about it. They're shorter, they're crisper.

The pitch clock was widely credited with increasing MLB viewership and speeding up games.

Bochy also reflected on some of the legends he's coached, specifically noting that some players just have a different sound when the ball leaves the bat.

Gary Sheffield had the most intimidating and unique sound off the bat in baseball

I coached third when Sheffield was with San Diego. This is back what, 93, 94. And oh my goodness, the sound of coming off his bat. It's just different. And you know, those guys, the elite players, you, you, you can tell when that ball's hit who, who's hitting sometimes.

Subjective claim based on Bochy's eye-witness experience.

If the Bills keep playing like this, the only thing left for Buffalo fans to do is start drinking heavily and prep for the draft.

Josh Allen must have a 'come to Jesus' moment regarding his turnovers

Josh needs to have like a come to Jesus moment of like, Hey, I can't be a superhero in on every single play. I have to take care of the football better because you're putting your defense in a bad spot. You're putting your team in a bad spot when you throw those type of interceptions.

Allen continued to struggle with turnovers in 2023 but the team's winning record balanced it out.

Russell Wilson looks like a winning quarterback again under Sean Payton

Russell Wilson actually does look good... he is playing, winning football and making plays with his feet and making nice passes and not making the mistakes.

Wilson's stats improved significantly in 2023 compared to 2022, though he was eventually benched.

Benching a starting running back for a single fumble makes no sense in the modern NFL

Why would you bench your guy [James Cook]? He basically sat one of your key parts of your team because he fumbled the ball in the first play. It makes no sense. Coaches have doghouses for running backs... maybe if it was a recurring thing, but James Cook is a good player. It didn't really make a lot of sense.

The Bills' offense notably struggled with consistency during that game while their primary explosive back was sidelined for a significant portion.

Michigan is 'America's Team' because they rely on clandestine surveillance

America loves the team that beats the odds, beats the adversity... well they yeah, they do rely on a network of clandestine surveillance to accomplish everything. I can see why that would align with the USA.

This is a satirical comparison between the Michigan sign-stealing scandal and government surveillance.

The Big 10 is incompetent for suspending Jim Harbaugh before a national title run

The Big 10 was wrong for what they did... if you think that Michigan did something wrong, I'm gonna most likely agree with you... but due process still does matter. It was such a half measure, half-ass thing by the Big 10 that it leaves me with no other conclusion than the Big 10 has no idea what they're doing and they're just trying to save face.

The suspension stood, but Michigan went on to win the National Championship despite the chaos.

James Franklin is a soft coach who will never win big games at Penn State

James Franklin... he's never gonna win the big one... he's not going anywhere [because of his contract]... but it's just gonna be the same thing. You'll get to the 12 team playoff and then you'll just see what happens against Ohio State and Michigan... He plays so soft. He coaches so soft.

Franklin lost to Michigan and Ohio State again in 2023, finishing with 10 wins but no major victory.

There is a 50/50 chance JMU gets to play in a bowl game

It's about 50 50. So they are ineligible to play in the postseason. However, if there are not enough bowl eligible teams in college football this season, then they will allow teams that are not eligible due to technicalities to play. Got it. So that's, that's a real thing.

JMU was selected to play in the Armed Forces Bowl due to a lack of 6-win teams.

NFL fans should wear diapers during seven-hour football Sundays

I actually, I don't hate the idea. I all cards on the table. I have worn a diaper during a game before... I might start wearing diapers when we're watching NFL streams on Sunday. You got seven hours of football.

This is a lifestyle recommendation from PFT based on his personal 'pee dog' philosophy.

Zion Williamson is not an NBA superstar

Is Zion Williamson to be a superstar? No. No. I don't think he's played enough games to be a superstar. Superstars play. He was a college superstar. I absolutely agree with that.

Kirk Herbstreit's dog being certified as an emotional support animal is a 'fake' designation just to help him fly

I saw a tweet from Herbie [Kirk Herbstreit] yesterday... he said that his dog just got certified as an emotional support animal. That feels like a fake emotional support animal to me. It feels like he just wanted his dog to fly.

While the dog (Ben) has official ESA paperwork, PFT is questioning the intent, which is a subjective opinion.

People who fake a handicap to pre-board airplanes are everything that is wrong with society

The fake pre-boarders. Those are the people I want credentials on. You gotta show me the handicap. I'm all for you having to get on the plane early, but you look like you're walking fine... you are everything wrong with this system... with society, with life.

Pre-boarding an airplane early by ignoring your assigned group is a legitimate 'hack in the system'

It's pretty easy. I have no problem with it. They never say anything. It's a hack in the system. I slip in... by myself. I have no problem with it. They never say anything.

Nathan Eovaldi will go down as one of the greatest postseason performers in MLB history

I think [Nathan Eovaldi] will go down as one of the greatest postseason performers. When you look at what he's done... he just has that maniacal focus. You love every game, but that postseason, he ramps it up even more.

Eovaldi became the first pitcher in MLB history to win five starts in a single postseason (2023) and has a career postseason ERA under 3.00, solidifying this claim.
