Charissa Thompson on TNF, Bruce Bochy’s World Series, and the Bills are Dead
The Buffalo Bills are officially in crisis mode after a disastrous Monday Night loss to the Broncos. Between the 12-man penalty and firing Ken Dorsey mid-season, the vibes in Orchard Park have hit rock bottom. Big Cat and PFT aren't pulling any punches about where this team is headed.
The Buffalo Bills stink and will not make the playoffs this year
The Buffalo Bills stink. They might be dead... I don't think they're gonna be in the playoffs. They have a really tough schedule. They're five and five...
PFT is ready to weld the window shut for good.
The Buffalo Bills' championship window is officially closed
You gotta talk window. That's closed. I think they're about to jump out of the window.
While Josh Allen gets a lot of the blame for his turnover problem, the coaching staff isn't helping. Big Cat specifically called out the benching of James Cook for an early fumble and the overall lack of awareness on high-leverage downs.
Any offensive coordinator who calls a shotgun play on 4th and 1 should be fired immediately
The fourth and one shotgun... why? Any team that's in fourth and one and goes shotgun should the OC should be fired right away. I hate that. You have to get one yard and you're like, 'now let's get seven yards.' It's crazy. It's crazy.
Michigan’s Adversity and Jimbo’s Buyout
College football is in a state of absolute chaos. Jim Harbaugh is out here calling Michigan "America's Team" while comparing himself to an iron wall that shatters viruses. It is peak football guy behavior. Big Cat thinks the Big 10 completely fumbled the suspension by rushing into it without due process, especially when you consider the financial stakes.
The Big 10 should give Michigan and Ohio State special treatment because they are the conference's 'breadwinners'
Life is not fair. If you're Tony Petitti, this is different. If it was Rutgers, if it was Purdue, if it was Wisconsin, yes. That's different than Michigan... Michigan and Ohio State are different than the rest of the Big 10. And you need to treat them like they are different... you have to prop up your big time breadwinners.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M finally pulled the trigger on Jimbo Fisher, handing him a buyout so large he should probably disappear to a private island for the rest of his life. Despite the massive resources in College Station, Big Cat is convinced that the job itself is a curse.
The Texas A&M head coaching position is the worst job in college football
I don't know what Texas A&M does now, because I think that might be the worst job in college football... the expectation is they're so crazy... you have to take that job knowing you're gonna get paid a lot of money and you're probably gonna fail because... the bar that they want to be at is so disconnected from where they are.
On a more positive note, the Heisman race is heating up, and it’s time to stop penalizing players for having bad defenses. Jayden Daniels is doing things at LSU that we haven't seen since the Joe Burrow days.
Jayden Daniels should win the Heisman Trophy
Jayden Daniels should be the Heisman... He's the best player in college football this year. And that's what the award should be. It shouldn't be a team award.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne: Lighthouse Truthers
Hank finally delivered his lighthouse presentation, and it was as metaphysical as we expected. Instead of proving the Gillette Stadium lighthouse is "real" by maritime standards, he questioned the very nature of reality.
The Gillette Stadium lighthouse is real as a symbol and a beacon of hope
Technically by definition, some would say that this lighthouse is not real. But there's some that would say that it is real... Just because PFT says this lighthouse isn't real, it doesn't mean you can't, it doesn't have to be real to you and as a region... Patriots fans, new Englanders, they'll recognize this lighthouse as a real thing, as a beacon of hope and as a symbol of our team.
PFT also introduced a new theory about the NHL's brightest star, suggesting that a fourth head coach firing for the Oilers points to one common denominator.
Connor McDavid is a 'coach killer'
Is Connor McDavid a coach killer? Big Cat, 'cause this is coach number four I think for him... I'm gonna say that he's a coach killer. Just because it's fun and I have no idea if it's true or not, but it's always good to just slap that label on a really good player.
Charissa Thompson and Bruce Bochy
Our friend Charissa Thompson joined the show in studio to talk about the transition to Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime and the fun of working with a panel of absolute characters. She was incredibly candid about her early career and the tricks of the trade as a sideline reporter.
I used to make up sideline reports if a coach wouldn't give me anything at halftime
I would make up the report sometimes because A, the coach wouldn't come out at halftime or it was too late and I was like, I didn't wanna screw up the report. So I was like, I'm just gonna make this up because first of all, no coach is gonna get mad if I say, Hey we need to kill, stop hurting ourselves. We need to be better on third down.
She also touched on her friendship with Ryan Russillo and the recurring rumors that they should end up together. PFT, naturally, had some thoughts on how Russillo would handle a prison stint.
Ryan Russillo would be great in prison as long as he has League Pass and weights
I actually think that [Ryan] Russillo would be great in prison. He would love... think about it because he doesn't really go outside that much. As long as prison had League Pass and weights... so you just work out, eat, and then watch basketball all day.
Finally, the guys spoke with 4x World Series champion Bruce Bochy. Coming out of retirement to win a title in year one with the Rangers is an all-time move. Bochy talked about the mentality of Nathan Eovaldi and why the new rules in baseball are actually making the game better for everyone.
The MLB pitch clock has significantly improved the game for everyone
The biggest is the clock, no question about it. And I, I think it has really worked out well. I love it personally. Keeps the game moving action. They took the shift away. So I think it's a better game. No doubt about it. They're shorter, they're crisper.
Bochy also reflected on some of the legends he's coached, specifically noting that some players just have a different sound when the ball leaves the bat.
Gary Sheffield had the most intimidating and unique sound off the bat in baseball
I coached third when Sheffield was with San Diego. This is back what, 93, 94. And oh my goodness, the sound of coming off his bat. It's just different. And you know, those guys, the elite players, you, you, you can tell when that ball's hit who, who's hitting sometimes.
If the Bills keep playing like this, the only thing left for Buffalo fans to do is start drinking heavily and prep for the draft.
