Kevin Stefanski and Adam Schefter on the Combine and NFL Free Agency
Combine week in Indianapolis is officially in the books, and while the rest of the crew drove back to Chicago, PFT Commenter stayed behind to rub elbows with IndyCar drivers and check out of hotels in record time. Big Cat, meanwhile, is coming off a brief retirement from sports following a brutal Wisconsin loss to Oregon. The bracketology obsession is reaching unhealthy levels, but the gambling advice remains consistent for anyone looking to make a run in March.
Betting the over on Alabama basketball is a cheat code
Alabama by the way is a cheat code if you want to get in on it. It's just betting their overs. They just never stopped missing. This has been like, oh, two weeks now they're over under for the first half was 45 and a half points last night. They scored 69 in the first half.
Big Cat also has his eye on the Razorbacks as a potential sleeper, even if the thought of John Calipari returning to a Final Four is enough to make any Big Ten fan sweat.
Arkansas is playing great basketball and John Calipari making the Final Four would be a fantastic tournament storyline
Arkansas has been playing some really good basketball. They lost that game in double overtime to Alabama where they basically ran out of guys. But since then, they've won five of six now... Cal [Calipari] in the Final Four would be great. Fucking great.
Coach Kevin Stefanski’s New Start
Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski joined the show to discuss his quick transition from Cleveland to the ATL. He shared some insight into his interview process, which included a personal backyard grilling session with Arthur Blank. Apparently, the Home Depot founder actually flips his own steaks, which is a level of commitment to the brand we have to respect.
We also got into the nitty-gritty of coaching a defense with absolute wreckers like Myles Garrett. Big Cat and PFT pushed Stefanski on whether Garrett is the greatest to ever do it after his recent record-breaking season.
Myles Garrett breaking the sack record while being double-teamed and chipped is an 'insane' feat
The degree of difficulty to which [Myles Garrett] is doing that is insane because every team goes into those games saying we can't let him wreck the game. And he still does. They chip him, they slide to him, they put a running back over there... to still get the record with all that against him was incredible.
Stefanski remained a master of the "I understand the question" non-answer when it came to his exit from Cleveland and the various quarterback sagas he navigated there. He did, however, admit to being scarred by calling a fake punt in his very first game as a head coach—a move he hasn't attempted since. Big Cat tried to pitch him on the "fake punt punt" to ease him back into special teams trickery, but it sounds like the Falcons will be sticking to the playbook for now.
Adam Schefter’s Annual Review
Adam Schefter sat down for his yearly tradition of answering for his few mistakes and breaking open the upcoming free agency market. The biggest shocker of the session was the status of the 49ers' quarterback room, with Schefter suggesting that Brock Purdy’s backup might be more secure than anyone realized.
The 49ers will not trade Mac Jones because they like him too much as a backup for Brock Purdy
I don't think they're gonna trade Mac Jones. They just have not, they, they like him too much. And Brock Purdy runs around. He's an active guy and he's missed some time. And when Brock Purdy missed time, Mac [Jones] was able to step right in... I think they really like Mac Jones too much [to move him].
As for the rest of the league, the quarterback carousel is spinning faster than ever. Schefter laid out a path for the Miami Dolphins that involves a massive amount of "taking your medicine" regarding Tua Tagovailoa's future.
Miami should release Tua and eat the record $99 million cap hit all at once
I think they probably just have to wind up releasing [Tua]. And the question is, how do you wanna take your medicine? You wanna take it all at once. One year. 99.1 million. The largest cap hit in NFL history. You wanna spread it out, make him post June one... I would just take all my medicine all at once. If it were me.
Beyond the veterans, we’re already looking at the 2026 Draft. While the Mannings are always a topic of conversation, Schefter has a clear favorite for the top spot when the time comes.
Fernando Mendoza is expected to be the #1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft
Unless some team makes an offer that they can't refuse... We think we, we could report, we probably could put on the bottom line: Fernando Mendoza expected to be the number one [pick].
Schefter also touched on the business side of the league, reporting that the Seahawks are currently a "great buying opportunity" if you happen to have ten billion dollars sitting in your couch cushions.
The Seattle Seahawks will sell for $10 billion
Somebody told me $10 billion... You're buying the defending Super Bowl champion. That's never happened. Right? You're buying an organization that's run very well... It's a great buying opportunity.
Fyre Fest and Bounties
To wrap up the week, we hit Fyre Fest. Big Cat is officially breaking up with steakhouses for a few months after over-ordering apps and felling the "meat sweats" one too many times. This led to a heated debate with PFT over the proper way to navigate a high-end menu.
You should never order appetizers at a steakhouse to maximize your sides
I'm of the mindset now that you don't need any appetizers at steakhouses. It's, it's a good place to run Zero apps... You don't need the calamari at a steakhouse... The sides at a steakhouse are elite. The mashed potatoes are always elite... mac and cheese always elite at a steakhouse, you wanna maximize your sides to go with a steak.
Finally, the Duke-UNC rivalry got personal. Big Cat and PFT are so incensed by the reports of a UNC staffer punching a Duke employee that they are putting their own money on the line to find the culprit.
I am offering a $10,000 bounty to find the UNC staffer who punched a Duke staffer
I will not sleep until we find this UNC staffer who punched one of your guys... Let's put a bounty on it. I will offer $5,000. [PFT]: I'll match. [Big Cat]: $10,000 if anyone can find the UNC person who punched a Duke staffer after the game. $10,000 cash. Give us the footage leading to their arrest.
Make sure you check your clocks this weekend because the "spring forward" is coming for us all. Don't be the person who shows up an hour late to the stream because you forgot how linear time works.
