Mike Lombardi on NFL Culture, Week 3 Recap, and Tiger Woods is Back
Week 3 in the NFL was the weekend where everyone who thought they knew anything about football was proven to have shit for brains. The Bills walked into Minnesota as massive underdogs and absolutely dismantled the Vikings, punctuated by Josh Allen launching himself into the stratosphere over Anthony Barr. PFT was so impressed by the rookie’s mobility that he’s already ready to crown a new king of the dual-threat era.
Josh Allen is a better running quarterback than Cam Newton
Josh Allen, better running quarterback than Cam Newton.
While Buffalo was finding life, things looked bleak in Houston. Deshaun Watson and the Texans fell to 0-3 after a sloppy loss to the Giants, prompting Big Cat and PFT to break out the jewelry.
The Done Chain is officially on the Houston Texans
I am going to hang the Done Chain on the Houston Texans. Done. Done. I'm done with them.
PFT thinks the slow start for Watson isn't just a fluke, but a reality of the medical timeline that everyone chose to ignore during the offseason hype.
Deshaun Watson will not have a great season due to his ACL recovery timeline
I didn't think that Deshaun Watson was going to have a great year this year because Adrian Peterson screwed it up for everybody by coming back from that ACL so quickly... It's going to be like a year and a half before he gets back to normal.
The Mahomes Era and Patriot Panic
Patrick Mahomes continued his scorched-earth tour against the 49ers, leading the Chiefs to a 3-0 start. Big Cat isn't just sold on the MVP hype; he’s ready to build the statue in Canton before the kid even finishes his first full season as a starter.
Patrick Mahomes will win MVP and be inducted into the Hall of Fame in his rookie year
I think he's going to be the first player ever in his rookie year to win MVP and automatic induction to the Hall of Fame.
PFT remains slightly more cautious, mostly because history suggests that the Andy Reid experience usually comes with a seasonal expiration date.
Andy Reid's teams always take a sharp performance dip after Halloween
We all know that Andy [Reid], he takes a sharp dip after Halloween. He goes into stage two diabetes and never comes back.
Meanwhile, the Patriots looked like they were running in cement against the Lions on Sunday Night Football. Despite the absolute lack of speed on both sides of the ball, Big Cat isn't ready to let the rest of the AFC East get their hopes up just yet.
The Patriots will still win the AFC East despite their slow start
The Patriots are still going to probably win the AFC East, right? ... You could probably even say they'll go to the AFC Championship.
Mike Lombardi on Gridiron Genius
Former NFL GM Mike Lombardi joined the show to discuss his new book and why certain teams are failing to build a winning culture. He didn't hold back on the Raiders' current situation, specifically questioning the investment in Derek Carr.
Derek Carr is not worth a $20 million salary
I'm not sure that [Derek] Carr's worth the $20 million when you watch him play.
Lombardi also weighed in on the Patriots' acquisition of Josh Gordon. While the move screams "Patriot Way" to many, Lombardi believes Gordon's lack of passion for the grind will ultimately make him a poor fit in Foxborough.
Josh Gordon will not have long-range success with the Patriots
I don't think [Josh Gordon] has long-range success written over it... because he's not passionate about football... If you're not willing to do the time and the effort into it, you're just going to get cast aside.
The conversation shifted to the dumpster fire in Dallas, where Lombardi offered a surprisingly defensive take on Dak Prescott, blaming the Cowboys' prehistoric offensive system rather than the quarterback’s talent.
Dak Prescott is not the problem in Dallas, the scheme is
I don't think [Dak Prescott sucks]... I think their scheme is so bad. I think they do nothing to help them. I think if Sean McVay went and spent two weeks in Dallas, they'd probably score 30 points a week.
Tiger Woods and Who's Back
Tiger Woods is officially, undeniably back after winning the Tour Championship. Even on a heavy NFL Sunday, the sight of Tiger in Sunday Red with the masses following him down the 18th fairway was enough to stop the world. Big Cat noted that Tiger’s gravity is so strong he broke through the football bubble.
Tiger Woods is all the way back
Tiger Woods is all the way back. He won the Tour Championship... Tiger Woods still was able to break through to anyone who's even watching football who doesn't even care about golf.
For Who's Back, PFT highlighted the return of the Joker, with Joaquin Phoenix taking on the role for a standalone film. PFT is making a very specific, high-stakes promise regarding the cast list.
Batman will definitely appear in the upcoming Joker movie
Batman will be in [the Joker movie] at some point. That's my solemn promise to you is Batman will be in there at some point.
We wrapped things up with a Take Quake regarding Baker Mayfield’s phone and a Monday Reading of Rick Pitino’s new Twitter account. If you aren't ready to be a "Pituito," you better find a new podcast.
Laces out, Pituitos.
