Hank on the Wood, Kirk Goldsberry’s Game 3 Reaction, and Danny Woodhead
The Celtics took care of business in Game 3, but the real story of the night was Henry Lockwood. Hank spent the evening sitting courtside on the wood, pump-faking basketballs, and eventually finding himself at the club with Guy Fieri. Between sitting on Paul Pierce’s top 75 jacket and nearly stealing his phone, it was a career night for the most famous person on the podcast. Big Cat and PFT were mesmerized by Hank's television presence, specifically his ability to catch a deflected ball and immediately look like he was ready to pull up from the corner. While the Warriors had their trademark third-quarter surge, the Celtics' physicality was simply too much.
I'm convinced the Celtics are simply the better team and the only team that can beat them is themselves
I'm convinced now the Celtics just the better team. The only, the only team that can beat the Celtics is the Celtics. Like they have to beat themselves.
Big Cat is fully out on Golden State at this point, convinced that Boston’s size and hustle have turned the tide for good. Even with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson finding their rhythm simultaneously for stretches, the gap in depth feels wider than ever. Hank, ever the pessimist regarding his own team's ability to avoid a collapse, still sees a long road ahead even if the trophy feels close.
The Celtics would have won by now if they didn't constantly throw up stinkers and let down in the third quarter
The Celtics, like what they have gotten better at over the season... they still do it to an extent it happened in the third quarter as they just we'll just let down. And all of a sudden they have terrible runs... they just throw up stinkers. I think that's been, it's been the most, it was like this in Milwaukee series, like this, the Miami series.
Beyond the hardwood, the conversation shifted to the landscape of professional golf. With the LIV tour officially launching, the guys checked in on their friend Brooks Koepka, who has been causing a stir on social media with some cryptic emoji usage. Big Cat isn't buying the rumors just yet, believing Brooks is just leaning into the chaos for the engagement.
Brooks Koepka is just messing with everyone and won't join LIV
Brooks, he did the eyeballs emojis. It actually was a good test run for us just in case any of our friends do joined the live tour because the part of my take group chat Brooks was fucking with everyone. He's not joining the live tour.
Kirk Goldsberry joined the show immediately following the final buzzer of Game 3 to provide some actual basketball expertise. Kirk noted that Boston essentially "trucked" the Warriors, doubling their points in the paint from the previous game and asserting their physical will. The discussion naturally turned to who is actually leading the race for Finals MVP between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen brown. While Jaylen provides the spark, Kirk thinks the voters will look at the guy steering the ship.
Jayson Tatum is the safer bet for Finals MVP
I'm going Jayson Tatum folks... I think Jayson Tatum is going to win the MVP because the Celtics are only, I don't want a series of Jayson Tatum has a few more good games and his passing in particular guys has been great... He's just slightly more complete and slightly more important to the Celtic success.
Looking ahead to the rest of the series, the consensus is that the Warriors are fighting an uphill battle against a team that is just bigger and stronger at every position. PFT is even rooting for a specific scenario that would break the sports media world: the Celtics winning the title while Steph Curry takes home the individual hardware.
Steph Curry should win Finals MVP even if the Warriors lose the series
I'm hoping that we get a Celtic series win and Steph Curry gets his first finals MVP out of that. That would be the ultimate threading the needle.
Our good friend Danny Woodhead also called in to recap his incredible run at US Open qualifying. Danny was only 36 holes away from the big stage, and while he fell just short in the final round, the feat of an NFL running back competing with PGA pros after only a few years of serious golfing is insane. Danny broke down the four holes that cost him, admitting he played a bit too much "defense" early on instead of attacking the greens. Big Cat isn't deterred and is ready to put his money on Danny making the field in the future.
Danny Woodhead will eventually play in a US Open
I'll put my money on you someday being in a U.S. Open. I wouldn't, you know, betting against Danny Woodhead in like his will to [succeed].
To wrap up the show, the guys got into a heated Fyre Fest of the week. Billy Football is currently in a legal battle with Chipotle and DoorDash after a ghost delivery left him eating ice cream for dinner. Meanwhile, Big Cat is already looking past the NBA and moving his gambling focus toward the diamond, eyeing a potential New York showdown in October.
I'm betting on a Subway Series between the Mets and Yankees in the World Series
I'm putting in subway series, future. The Mets and the Yankees to meet in the world series. I think it's 14 to one... I just want to see it in this office and the chaos that ensues.
Hank still hasn't won the lottery ball, but at least he has the Mayor of Flavortown on speed dial now.
