JJ Watt on Burnley and Retirement, Sixers' Collapse, and Max’s Soul Patch
The vibes in the studio were at an all-time polarized high today. Hank is walking on sunshine after the Celtics absolutely dismantled the 76ers in Game 7, while Max is living in a personal hell involving a Game 7 blowout, the death of the Process, and a very questionable soul patch. Jayson Tatum put up 51 points and looked like the player the guys have been begging him to be for years.
Jayson Tatum officially has a 'dog' in him after Game 7
I think the real winner in this series should be us for saying that Jayson Tatum is the best player on the court and he needs to get a dog. We were dog used dog salesman adoption counselors and we set up a tent outside Jayson Tatum's house. And he adopted a dog from us. He's got a dog now.
Big Cat was quick to point out that when Tatum is aggressive, he’s essentially untouchable, even when the league MVP is on the other side of the floor.
Jayson Tatum is a top five player in the NBA
I think Jayson Tatum is a phenomenal, phenomenal basketball player, top five player. There are times when he floats and isn't aggressive and it drives me insane. Cause this is the type of guy that should go and take a series and that's exactly what he did.
Speaking of that MVP, the conversation turned to the catastrophic failure of the 76ers. Max was forced to sit in the booth and watch his season go up in flames while wearing a fresh soul patch he lost in a bet. Between Doc Rivers losing his tenth Game 7 and James Harden disappearing when it mattered most, the guys didn't hold back on why this Philly era is over.
Doc Rivers holds the NBA record for the most losses by a coach in games with a chance to clinch a series
Doc Rivers is now 17 and 33 straight up with a chance to clinch a series. That means 33 losses is the most of any coach in NBA history with a chance to clinch a series. 34% when his team has a chance to clinch.
Max finally reached his breaking point and admitted that the entire philosophy of the last decade in Philly has officially hit a brick wall.
The Process is officially dead in Philadelphia
There isn't much more to this. The Process is dead. It is officially dead. It's over. Doc Rivers is gone a hundred percent. James Harden's gone a hundred percent.
PFT floated a theory that maybe Harden's postseason struggles aren't just about a shooting slump, but rather a desire to get his summer started early.
James Harden doesn't actually want to win in the playoffs because he wants to party
I actually think that there might be something to the fact that James Harden doesn't want to win in the playoffs because he gets paid regardless and he just wants to go party in the off season. Like legitimately James Harden might not want to win playoff series.
The King of Retirement
JJ Watt joined the show in studio to talk about his new life as a minority owner of Burnley FC. He’s fully embracing the "football" life across the pond, even if Big Cat thinks he's just a front-runner for buying in right as they got promoted. JJ explained the allure of the English game and why the stakes feel different than anything in the US.
The English Premier League is more exciting than American sports because of the high consequences of relegation and promotion
That's the beauty of it. That's why I love the English Premier League because it's relegation, it's promotion, the consequences are so much higher.
Despite the constant rumors of him joining his brothers in Pittsburgh, JJ put the hammer down on any potential comeback. He’s enjoying life without the 5:00 AM squats and the constant threat of a torn pec, even though he claims he could still walk onto a field and out-bench most of the league right now.
I will not be playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers next season
I will not be playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I will be going to a game at Heinz Field to watch my brother play... I can tell you right now for a fact, I'm not coming back... if I went out there to play right now, it [my body] would not perform.
I can still bench press 225 pounds for 27 reps today
225. If I was to do it right now. Yeah, I could probably right now today get like 27.
JJ also got deep on the mental toll of his career, specifically how hard it is to be a highly-paid superstar stuck in the training room instead of on the field. He even sided with Giannis on the recent "failure" debate, proving that perspective comes once you aren't fighting for your life in the trenches every Sunday.
I agree with Giannis Antetokounmpo that failing to win a title isn't a failure
The older I get and the further along I get and the more perspective that I get in life, I absolutely agree with Giannis' comments. I completely see people on the other side... but in terms of as an athlete, how you have to mentally live your life to not put yourself into a really, really shitty way... I love his perspective.
Who’s Back and New Life
Who’s Back of the week featured a very predictable return for Ja Morant and his Instagram Live antics. PFT and Big Cat tried to find the logic in why a guy with everything to lose can’t stop holding weapons on a stream with 100 viewers.
Ja Morant's gun flashing isn't a legal issue, just a 'stupidity test' he is failing
I don't think that he was breaking any laws in this video. Was he? He was just being a dumbass, right?... Essentially there's a couple things that happened... it's almost like a stupidity test of like, can you not flash your gun and we'll be cool.
On a much happier note, Big Cat is officially a Father of 3. He shared the wild story of his wife’s water breaking right as he touched down in West Virginia for Rough N' Rowdy and his quick pivot back home for the birth. He’s already leaning into the veteran dad moves to keep the peace in a house that is now officially outnumbered by children.
Parents having multiple children should buy a 'big gift' for the older siblings to keep them occupied when the new baby arrives
The only tip I'd give is I bought a big gift for my first son and my daughter and I saved it for when the baby came. So when the baby came home, I was like, 'look, here's a gift.' And it was like a toy they could play with for four hours, which was a lifesaver.
We wrapped things up with a look ahead to the Conference Finals. Hank is riding high with a prediction that the Celtics keep this momentum rolling right through Jimmy Butler and the Heat.
The Celtics will beat the Heat in six games in the Eastern Conference Finals
I think it should be Celtics and six or Celtics and seven... Celtics in six, official.
If the Lakers win the title, Big Cat might actually retire from sports out of pure spite.
