Jon Rothstein on Brackets, Tom Brady Cucks Selection Sunday, and Billy’s QB Winner

It should have been the most glorious night of the year, a night reserved for printing out brackets and arguing about 12-5 upsets. Instead, Tom Brady decided forty days of retirement was plenty and announced his return to the Buccaneers right in the middle of Selection Sunday. Big Cat and PFT were understandably rattled by the timing, with PFT floating a theory that this was less about a love for the game and more about a certain Steelers legend's future travel plans.

Tom Brady un-retired because he didn't want to share his Hall of Fame induction with Ben Roethlisberger

Tom Brady saw the writing on the wall. He's like, five years now. I don't want to get my [Hall of Fame] ceremony cut by big Ben [Roethlisberger]. So I'll just cuck the kids and stuff.

The Hall of Fame timing is factually correct (they would have been in the same class), but the motive is satirical.

While the NFL world was melting down, the guys tried to keep the focus on the Big Dance. PFT isn't buying the easy road for the favorites out West, noting that the region is packed with potential pitfalls for the top seeds.

The West is the toughest region in the 2022 NCAA Tournament

I think that the west is the toughest region right now. There's landmines in the west.

Subjective tournament analysis, though the #1 overall seed (Gonzaga) and #2 Duke were both in this region.

Big Cat, meanwhile, is doing his best to manage expectations for a Wisconsin team that has given him plenty of stress this season. He’s happy they made it, but he isn't exactly booking his flight to New Orleans just yet.

I don't expect 2022 Wisconsin to make it past the Sweet 16

If they can get to the sweet 16, I'll be very, very happy. I don't expect anything past that. It's all gravy past that. So when, if they lose in the first two games and people are like, they're frauds, I'm telling you right now. I don't, I don't expect a ton.

Wisconsin lost in the Round of 32 to Iowa State, so they failed to reach even the Sweet 16.

The Regional Breakdowns

One of the biggest gripes of the night was the seeding of the Tennessee Volunteers. Despite a scorching end to the season and an SEC Tournament title, they got stuck on the 3-line, a move that left PFT questioning the committee's logic.

Tennessee got screwed as a 3 seed and should have been a 2 seed

I think that Tennessee got fucked too. They did. Tennessee got dry fucked. Her three seed. They should have been at two seed should have been one of the top two seeds, in my opinion, duke fucked duke. Yes. Duke, fuck Tennessee. Tennessee should have that two seat.

Many bracketologists agreed that Tennessee was underseeded compared to Duke.

Big Cat also voiced his yearly frustration with how the committee handles mid-majors. He’s tired of seeing the best small schools cannibalize each other in the opening round rather than getting a crack at the giants.

It is stupid to match up good mid-major teams against each other in the first round

I hate how they have like good lower conference teams mashed up in the first round. I think that's bullshit. Like I think Murray state playing San Francisco is stupid. ... Split those up. I like to see you like to see the power five or power six in college basketball go against the smaller schools.

This is a subjective opinion on tournament scheduling and entertainment value.

Jon Rothstein in Studio

The man who never sleeps, Jon Rothstein, joined the show to deliver his annual sermon on the state of the sport. Rothstein was in mid-season form, referencing mountain west bid totals and obscure role players with the speed of a man who just had international service added to his cell phone. He kicked things off by sticking up for a Texas A&M team that he feels did more than enough to earn a spot.

Texas A&M should have been in the NCAA Tournament field

I thought that Texas A&M, you know, should have been in the field. I thought the committee did a really, really good job. But I think when you look at what they've done did the last couple of days... having neutral site wins against teams, the caliber over in Arkansas and an Auburn compared to everything else. I thought it was pretty impressive.

A common opinion among analysts after A&M's deep run in the SEC tournament.

He also proposed a radical shift for the First Four in Dayton, suggesting the committee should stop making conference champions play for the right to be a 16-seed and instead focus on the big-name bubble teams.

The NCAA should allow all automatic qualifiers to advance into the round of 64 and have the final eight at-large teams play in Dayton

I firmly believe that the NCAA should allow all the automatic qualifiers to advance into the round of 64. And then the final eight at large teams should be playing in Dayton. And then it gives us an opportunity to really jumpstart the tournament with four heavyweight showdowns.

An ongoing policy debate in college basketball; hasn't happened yet.

When it came time to fill out the actual bracket, Rothstein didn't shy away from the drama. He sees the Coach K retirement tour ending in heartbreak at the hands of a familiar foe in the West.

Gonzaga will beat Duke in the regional final to end Coach K's career

Setting up a Yukon Arkansas round of 32 game... I got duke moving on against Michigan state, duke playing Texas tech... duke falls to duke will duke beacon Zagat and the regional final that beat him once already. I'm going to take the zags and coach K's career ends at the chase center. So Gonzaga over duke and the regional final of the region of prospects.

Duke beat Arkansas to reach the Final Four; Gonzaga lost to Arkansas in the Sweet 16.

As for the eventual champion, Rothstein is all-in on the desert. He expects Tommy Lloyd to complete the most impressive year-one turnaround in history by taking down the tournament's overall favorite.

Arizona will beat Gonzaga to win the 2022 National Championship

I got an Arizona Gonzaga, Kentucky. Then I look at this region... I have an all big 10 regional final. I've got Keegan, Marie and Iowa going to the final four... setting up [the final] Against Tommy Lloyd against mark for you. And for the first time, since 1997, Tommy Lloyd in year one wins the national championship. Ben Matheran explodes in the NCAA tournament like a volcano.

The final was Kansas over North Carolina. Arizona lost in the Sweet 16 to Houston.

Who’s Back and Billy’s QB Bracket

Outside of the bracket talk, Big Cat touched on the Khalil Mack trade. While losing a star defender usually hurts, he's embracing the rebuild in Chicago and isn't shedding tears over the departure.

Khalil Mack being traded is fine because the Bears need to tear it all down

That was one of those situations where people wanted me to be mad, but I wasn't because I, the bears need to re they need to fix everything. They need to tear it all down. Build it back up. ... I wasn't mad because I don't know what the point of going like seven and 10 with Khalil Mack.

The Bears did indeed go into a full rebuild and Mack's production was declining due to age/injury.

To wrap things up, Billy Football finally crowned the winner of his 2022 QB Prospect bracket. Before naming Kenny Pickett the champion (helped by a friendship with Big Cat and a very specific glove philosophy), Billy gave a scouting report on Malik Willis that makes him sound like a literal superhero.

Malik Willis is a hybrid of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson

I think Malik Willis is going to have a really good NFL career... I think he's what they advertise him as he's Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson hybrid. He's got the arm of [Allen] and the legs of [Jackson].

Malik Willis has struggled significantly to establish himself as a starter in the NFL, far from an Allen/Jackson hybrid.

Now we just wait for the games to start and for Rothstein to inevitably tweet that this is, in fact, March.

We sleep in May.

Tom Brady will play for the Raiders under Josh McDaniels

My theory is that Tom Brady wants to play for the Raiders for [Josh] McDaniels who's now the head coach of the Raiders, his old offensive coordinator... Pioli being very weird and cryptic on NFL network today about whether or not Tom Brady was going to come back and play for the bucks. Like he knew something.

Brady played the entire 2022 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Amari Cooper is perpetually not as good as his hype

Amari Cooper is firmly in my mind, a guy who like just is perpetually, not as good as his hype. He's a guy who you will forever want to be a clear cut number one. And he will never be that. So you know what I'm saying? Like, you're always wanting Amari Cooper to be the guy. And I don't think he ever will be the guy. I mean, CD lamb's better than him.

Cooper had a strong 2022 season (1,160 yards, 9 TDs), which arguably challenged this 'not a #1' narrative.

Kyrie Irving being allowed in the arena but not on the floor is a mockery of the NYC mandate

Kyrie's moved today was awesome. Showing up to the game in Brooklyn with no mask sitting on the sideline and bakes, basically making a mockery of the entire New York city mandate, which makes no sense the carrier and can't play. And, but he can sit. And he was also in the locker room.

The mandate was widely criticized for this exact inconsistency and was eventually changed.

The East is the 'Region of Branding' because of the high-profile programs in the bracket

I look at the east region and I look at the tie seeds, Baylor defending national champion to seed Kentucky's Kentucky Purdue. One of the great brands in the big 10 Texas is Texas and UCLA in North Carolina. Also in the top half of that region, this is the region of branding.

The East region featured Baylor, Kentucky, Purdue, UCLA, North Carolina, and Texas, arguably the most brand-heavy quadrant.

South Dakota State will upset Providence in the first round

South Dakota state has not lost a game since early December, they've won 30 games. They shoot just under 45% from three as a team. I'm taking South Dakota state over Providence.

Providence beat South Dakota State 66-57.

Malik Willis will either be a Hall of Famer or a complete bust

Like he could actually like, you know, it's either going to translate and he's going to be like Patrick Mahomes or it's not. One of those things where it's... so like hall-of-famer or bust. Exactly. Yep. I like that.

Too early to call 'bust' vs 'Hall of Famer' definitively, but the 'Hall of Famer' path looks extremely unlikely.
