Matt Barnes on Playing High, Kobe's Flinch, and the Warriors' Dynasty

Big Cat and PFT Commenter are feeling the buzz of the NBA playoffs as the Warriors continue to look like the vintage version of themselves even without Kevin Durant. While Steph is dropping 37, Big Cat is looking at the guy doing the dirty work as the real engine of the dynasty.

The Warriors are Draymond Green's team

The Warriors are a lot of fun to watch right now and I'm gonna say it it's Draymond's team... He had 16, 10, and 7 was everywhere. He is the heartbeat of the Warriors. He unlocks Steph Curry to score 37 points.

The Warriors' identity is inextricably linked to Steph Curry, but Draymond is widely considered the defensive/emotional leader.

The conversation shifted to the Blazers, who blew a massive lead in the third quarter of Game 2. PFT is already reaching for the tombstone on Portland’s season because once the Warriors go on one of those "sudden" runs, it's usually curtains for whoever is on the other end of the court.

The Warriors vs. Blazers Western Conference Finals series is already over

This series is O-V-E-R. Over. Sorry, Blazers.

The Warriors went on to sweep the Trail Blazers 4-0.

Over in the East, the Bucks took down the Raptors despite a massive night from Kyle Lowry. Big Cat thinks Toronto might have just punted their best chance to steal one in Milwaukee because you can't count on Lowry being that unconscious every night, especially when Giannis hasn't even played his best ball yet.

The Raptors 'wasted' a rare 30-point performance from Kyle Lowry by losing Game 1 to the Bucks

Kyle Lowry had 30 points. He was unconscious. And you wasted your Kyle Lowry game. You don't get a lot of those. Giannis didn't play well. The Bucks didn't play well for the first three quarters... And you still somehow lose by eight points.

The Raptors did lose Game 1 despite Lowry's 30 points, and while they eventually won the series, losing a game where a secondary star peaks is a valid 'wasted' opportunity in the moment.

Matt Barnes: The Ultimate Enforcer

14-year NBA veteran Matt Barnes joined the show for an incredible look into the life of a professional role player. Despite winning a ring with the 2017 Warriors, Barnes has a very unique perspective on that hardware. He isn't walking around wearing the ring or even really calling himself a champ.

I do not count my 2017 NBA Championship as earned

To be honest with you, I really don't count that championship... I got hurt going into the playoffs... and I'm always someone that like, I've never been given anything. So to me, I always wanted to earn it. And I felt like because I wasn't out there, you know, on the court with my guys sweating and fighting that it was kind of really just it was given to me.

This is Barnes' personal feeling about his career accomplishments.

The interview covered the infamous Kobe Bryant flinch (or lack thereof), with Barnes confirming the ball was directly in Kobe's grill. He also got incredibly honest about his pre-game routine. While the league has strict rules, Barnes managed to navigate his career while using marijuana to get into the zone, claiming it actually led to his best performances on the hardwood.

My best NBA games were played while high

My best games in the NBA were high... After [shootaround] I would go home, I'd smoke a joint, then I would take a nap. And then I'd wake up, shower, eat, and bounce... It was probably within four or five hours of the game possibly.

Barnes has stated this consistently in interviews; whether his performance was actually statistically better is subjective but his use is a confirmed claim.

Barnes also gave his thoughts on the current state of the Warriors and why Kevin Durant might be looking for the exit door this summer. Even with the championships, there is a clear hierarchy in the Bay Area that has nothing to do with who the best player is on the stat sheet.

Kevin Durant will leave the Warriors because it's always 'Steph Curry's team'

I just think if there was anything that kind of maybe – maybe not – I wouldn't even say bother him, but just kind of I want to do it on my own type situation... they win three in a row. They win four. They win five. This is Steph Curry's team, and, you know, they were fortunate enough to get KD.

Kevin Durant did indeed leave the Warriors in July 2019 to sign with the Brooklyn Nets.

Fyre Fest and The Final Throne

Fyre Fest of the week featured Big Cat getting sneezed on during a commute and PFT breaking down the historical "Fire Fest" that was Chernobyl. The guys also took some time to roast Colin Cowherd for his bizarre obsession with Baker Mayfield and Odell Beckham Jr., especially after OBJ leaked the receipts of Cowherd being a fanboy in the DMs.

Colin Cowherd is a 'loser' for trolling Odell Beckham Jr. while secretly rooting for him in private texts

That's a funny way to root for somebody. To just trash them? ... So he turned it into a game show of how many things he can name about Odell Beckham that don't include him rooting for him... Colin Cowherd, I just used your words against you, you loser.

This is a subjective opinion on Cowherd's character and professional ethics.

To wrap things up, with the Game of Thrones series finale looming, the guys offered their final predictions for who ends up on the Iron Throne. While Hank is following the Vegas odds toward the Three-Eyed Raven, Big Cat thinks it ends in a bloodbath for the Targaryen line.

Jon Snow will kill Daenerys Targaryen and the dragon

I've said that Jon Snow's going to kill Dany... I think Jon Snow's going to kill Dany and kill the dragon. Because he's going to be like, we can't have dragons in this world. Look what they did to King's Landing.

Jon Snow did kill Daenerys, but the dragon (Drogon) survived and flew away after melting the Iron Throne.

Bran Stark will become the King of Westeros

Bran comes down from Winterfell, stands up out of his wheelchair, and raises his arms and shows he's the true Night King... but I think it's Bran. But it's Bran just because all the betting sites are like Bran.

Bran Stark became 'Bran the Broken', King of the six kingdoms.

Just remember, if Jon Snow doesn't want the throne, he can always come back to Chicago and help the Bulls return to their natural state of being slightly below average.

The Bulls should re-sign Jimmy Butler so they can return to being 'mediocrely shitty'

I kind of want the Bulls to re-sign Jimmy Butler so they can just be mediocrely shitty again. It'd be kind of funny. Get out of the lottery for the next 10 years... Just go back in time. To move to exactly where you were, which is second round losing in a five-game series.

OpinionBasketballMediumSarcastic
Butler did not return to the Bulls; he eventually signed with the Heat that summer.

Seth Curry is a better pure shooter than Steph Curry

The narrative I'm going to get going is Seth Curry is the better pure shooter than Steph Curry... The better pure guy. Steph has to create his own shot. Seth is much better off the pick... Seth is better away from the ball.

While Seth has a higher career 3P%, Steph is widely considered the greatest shooter ever due to volume and difficulty; this is a deliberately provocative and largely incorrect take.

Nick Nurse will have a long coaching career because he makes memorable 'goofy faces' on the sideline

The winner of the playoffs, I'm saying it right now... the finals MVP, Nick Nurse's goofy faces. That guy makes faces... if you do faces, you'll stick around longer. You have to have something that people are like, oh, Nick Nurse, the face guy? ... You have to have a look.

Nick Nurse did win the title that year and remained a prominent head coach in the league for years (Raptors, then 76ers), though his 'faces' are a subjective factor in his longevity.

Baron Davis would be one of the all-time greats if he had stayed healthy

Best all-around point guard I ever played with, Baron Davis. When he's healthy, no question. If Baron Davis would have had a healthy career, he'd be talked about as one of the greats. There's no question about that.

Davis was an elite talent but his career totals and longevity are often cited as reasons he's not in the 'greatest ever' tier.

Kevin Durant is the best player in the world

Kevin Durant to me is the best player in the world right now and will probably go down as one of the most efficient, effective offensive players we've ever seen.

Durant was the reigning 2x Finals MVP at this time, though Giannis and Kawhi were also in the conversation.

Arya Stark will die in the Game of Thrones series finale

I think Arya's going to die too. Yeah. There's my prediction. Yeah, she seems like she's a likable enough character. She's got a little bit of that spunk in her where she can get herself into some trouble.

Arya Stark survived and sailed 'West of Westeros'.
