Todd McShay and Matt LaFleur on NFL Draft Chaos and Playoff Recaps
The NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing, but draft season is officially here to ruin everyone's sleep schedule. Big Cat and PFT started on Zoom with Max looking like a cozy little sick boy in the corner, apparently sidelined by a bad batch of meatballs. Despite Max's stomach bug, the energy was high as the guys processed a wild slate of games that saw the Celtics continue their path of destruction through the East.
Eastern Conference Fatigue and the Bucks' Bad Vibes
PFT is officially out on the Eastern Conference. After watching the Celtics dismantle another opponent, he’s ready to just hand them the trophy and save everyone the travel time. It’s not that the other teams are bad, it’s just that they look like appetizers for a very hungry Jayson Tatum.
The NBA should stop the Eastern Conference playoffs because the Celtics are just going to eat everyone
Can we just stop with the Eastern conference playoffs? Can we just not do 'em? Because what's happening is every team is just kind of getting fattened up to get eaten by the Celtics and a delicious snack. Like that's what's gonna happen.
While PFT is out on the East, Big Cat is holding onto hope for the Pacers. He loves the pace and the shooting, but the real story in the division is the crumbling situation in Milwaukee. Between injuries and rumors about their superstar's future, things are looking grim for the Cream City.
I would not be shocked if Giannis Antetokounmpo doesn't finish his career in Milwaukee if they don't make a deep run
He said that he would not be shocked if Giannis doesn't finish his career in Milwaukee and that this is a very pivotal playoff for them. And if they don't make a finals run or win the finals, there could be a big wholesale change in Milwaukee.
Ethical Hoops and the Detroit Renaissance
Back in the studio, Big Cat had a bone to pick with Jalen Brunson. While acknowledging his talent, the constant foul baiting has reached a tipping point for the guys. It’s become a specific style of play that Big Cat has categorized as "unethical."
Jalen Brunson's foul baiting has made him hard to watch as a basketball fan
The foul baiting has gotten to a point where it's just hard to watch. And it's not just the foul baiting... the Knicks in this fourth quarter, they just go to straight iso ball foul baiting. No one else touches the ball. Jalen Brunson just trying to score. And it's bad basketball to watch.
This led to a broader discussion about what constitutes a "good watch" in the playoffs. While the Knicks are leaning into the whistle, the Pistons—fresh off breaking a historic playoff losing streak—are playing a brand of basketball the guys can actually get behind.
Cade Cunningham is an 'ethical hooper' while Jalen Brunson is an 'unethical hooper'
Cade Cunningham is an ethical hooper. Jalen Brunson is an unethical hooper... I always just judge it is is a player trying to score or they trying to get fouled. And when it leans more to trying to get fouled, that's just not basketball I wanna watch.
Big Cat pointed out that this Pistons win feels like the final piece of the puzzle for Detroit sports. With the Lions and Tigers trending up, the city is finally escaping the basement of professional sports.
Winning a playoff game signals that all of Detroit sports, besides the Red Wings, are trending in the right direction
This is something that Pistons fans should enjoy and revel in and be like, yes. Like it is now trending towards the right way. All of Detroit sports, by the way, besides the Red Wings, like think about it, the lions have been bad forever... Tigers were bad... and now the Pistons.
Todd McShay’s 2025 Draft Intel
Our good friend Todd McShay joined the show from a high-end Hollywood studio to give us the real dirt on what's happening ahead of Thursday. While the mock drafts are flying everywhere, McShay says the top of this class is much more exclusive than people realize. He sees a massive gap between the top two prospects and everyone else.
Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter are in their own elite tier at the top of the 2025 draft class
There's two guys that are at the top and that's Travis Hunter and Abdul Carter. Like they're in their own tier if you will. Then after that there's, there's a handful of guys.
McShay also threw some cold water on the idea that this will be a quarterback-heavy first round. Despite the desperate needs of several teams, the value just might not be there to justify a reach in the top 32.
It is more likely that only one quarterback is drafted in the first round than three
There's a growing sense that it's more likely that one quarterback gets drafted in the first round than three. Cam Ward one, Jackson Dart two, Shedeur Sanders three, Tyler Shough four... I think it's more likely that one gets drafted than three.
For the Giants fans out there, McShay gave a glowing review of Brian Daboll's ability to polish a young signal-caller, which should give some hope regardless of who they land on.
Brian Daboll is one of only a handful of people in the NFL who genuinely knows how to develop a quarterback
If you hire Brian Daboll, you did so because he is one of the handful, not dozens, handful of human beings on this planet in the NFL that actually know how to develop quarterbacks... this guy is at a very high level in the NFL in terms of offensive coaching.
Matt LaFleur: War Rooms and The Rizzler
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur stopped by to talk about the reality of the draft war room. We got deep into the weeds on draft snacks and the stress of watching your favorite players get sniped one pick before you're on the clock.
Of course, it wouldn't be PMT if we didn't spend ten minutes trying to explain Gen Alpha slang to a man who just wants to win a Super Bowl. Big Cat and PFT attempted to introduce Coach LaFleur to "The Rizzler," which went about as well as you’d expect for a 44-year-old NFL coach.
Before letting him go, we had to ask about the Jets' current situation. LaFleur’s brother was on that staff, so he’s heard the stories, and he couldn't help but enjoy Aaron Rodgers' recent comments about missing the culture in Green Bay.
Aaron Rodgers realizing he misses the Packers' culture after his time with the Jets makes me grin
Aaron Rodgers said that he's looking for a culture like the Packers... That does make me, that does make me grin. That makes me happy. Unfortunately just between Saleh and my brother, you know, there's some interesting stories [from the Jets] to say.
Whether it's the Rizzler or the tush push, Matt LaFleur is ready for the draft—just don't ask him to throw a first pitch anytime soon unless he's allowed to practice from the rubber first.
If you see a 45-passenger Gravitron in the Barstool parking lot next week, mind your own business.
