Randy Moss on Kentucky Derby Picks, Keith Yandle, and Cocky Hank Returns
The Philadelphia 76ers are officially dead, and while the city is mourning, Max is actually being surprisingly rational. Despite a heartbreaking series loss to the Knicks, Max is looking at the bright side for the first time in his life. He’s already spending the Tobias Harris money in his head, convinced that a clean slate and a massive amount of cap space will finally allow the front office to build a real team around Joel Embiid.
This off-season feels different for the Sixers because they finally have significant cap space to build around Joel Embiid
This is the first off season where we have Cap space and We have some room to make some, a difference in our lineups. [Even] if we don't [get Paul George or LeBron James], just using that Tobias [Harris] money to go get guys like Dante [DiVincenzo], like the role players that the Knicks had who are really good, that go and get guys like that who can surround [Embiid] and hit shots.
Big Cat was quick to agree that the future isn't entirely bleak in Philly, mainly because Tyrese Maxey has ascended to a level that few expected so quickly. After a series where he carried the load during Embiid's health struggles, the consensus is that Maxey is no longer just a young talent—he’s a cornerstone.
Tyrese Maxey has officially taken the next step into being an NBA 'killer' and superstar
Tyrese Maxey kind of [is] taking that next step of like, oh fuck, he's a killer. I agree with you... if we can add this one piece, we might be in a really good spot next year.
Of course, it wouldn't be PMT without a little delusion. Max eventually lost his composure and claimed that he wouldn't trade Tyrese Maxey for Jaylen Brown straight up, a take that nearly sent Hank through the roof.
Tyrese Maxey is better than Jaylen Brown
I mean, Tyrese Maxey is better than Jaylen Brown for sure. Ooh, for sure. [Hank] would trade Jaylen Brown for Tyrese Maxey immediately.
Speaking of Hank, the return of "Cocky Hank" is in full swing. With the Celtics easily dispatching the Heat and the rest of the Eastern Conference bracket looking like a MASH unit, Hank is ready to crown himself. He isn't even pretending to be nervous about the next round, viewing the path to the Finals as a formality.
The Eastern Conference is a cakewalk for the Celtics
Yeah. No, the East is a cakewalk... They should lose one, maybe two games. The over under should be three. Maybe one series next, next game.
Kentucky Derby Preview with Randy Moss
It’s the best two minutes in sports, and that means the OG Randy Moss joined the show to give us the blueprint for Saturday. The big story this year is the continued absence of Bob Baffert, but Randy is focused on the actual talent in the gates. He made it clear that while there are plenty of storylines, one horse stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of raw ability.
Fierceness is the best horse in the Kentucky Derby by three or four lengths
If all the horses run their best races, Fierceness wins the race, hands down. Talent wise, Fierceness is probably three or four lengths better than any other horse in the field.
We also touched on the international flair this year with Forever Young coming over from Japan. While the horse is undefeated, Randy has some serious reservations about the travel schedule and the horse's ability to handle the conditions at Churchill Downs.
Forever Young has travel and track concerns heading into the Derby
Forever Young is the most accomplished Japanese horse that's ever come over here... but I've got two concerns... the travel bothered him... the other thing, the trainer seems to be borderline obsessive about keeping this horse out of this kickback spray in his face.
If you're looking for a winner earlier in the day on Saturday, Randy provided a glowing report for a specific horse in Race 7. He noted that the buzz around the barn for this horse has been undeniable since arriving at the track.
Coppi is my favorite bet of the weekend in the Distaff Turf Mile (Race 7) on Saturday
The horse I like the most in the two days for betting purposes is running on Saturday in the seventh race. It's a race called the Distaff Turf Mile and her name is Coppi... The reviews of this horse back at the barn in the mornings have been absolutely glowing.
NHL Playoffs with Keith Yandle
Keith Yandle joined the show to talk some puck and immediately addressed the decline of Alexander Ovechkin. After the Rangers swept the Capitals, Yandle noted that while Ovie will always have that legendary shot, the physical dominance that once defined his game might be a thing of the past.
Ovechkin's days of being a physical force are limited
I think the days of where he's running guys through the boards, you know, a force to be reckoned with out there, those might be limited. But, you know, I think when it comes to goal scoring, he's, I think he could do it till he is 45 years old.
Looking at the Western Conference, Yandle isn't buying the hype on McDavid and the Oilers quite yet. He thinks they are still too top-heavy and lack the defensive structure needed to survive the gauntlet out West.
The Oilers aren't good enough to win the West because they lack the depth and defense of other top contenders
I don't think it's [the Oilers'] year... I just think those other teams are a little bit more deep, better goal tending, better defensively... I think the west is too stacked and at the end of the day, I think the east is gonna win it this year.
Yandle is putting his chips on the Sunshine State this year. He loves the way the Panthers have matured into a physical, veteran-led group that can win in multiple ways, ultimately picking them to hoist the Cup.
The Florida Panthers will win the Stanley Cup
I got Florida and Colorado [in the finals]... I think it's the Panthers year. I just, they, they're a fun team to watch they, they play so hard. Their big guys are playing great.
Fyre Fest and Brainstorming
Fyre Fest of the week took a bizarre turn when Big Cat tried to pitch a "Lice Outbreak" at the Chicago office as a content piece. It led to an all-time weird brainstorming session about how to monetize itchy heads and UV lights. Before moving on, Big Cat shared a truly disturbing personal preference regarding outdoor pests.
I like getting a single bug bite
I like a good bug bite. Just a good, just a good old fashioned bug bite. Like maybe on the top of your shin. Nice little spot. You can scratch it a little... A single bug bite on the top of your shin. Just a little itch. Not so bad.
Between lice, bug bites, and double elbow surgery for PFT’s dog Blake, it was a heavy week for health concerns, but at least we have the Derby to look forward to.
Good luck with your bets and try to stay away from the sandbox.
