Richard Deitsch and Stingray Steve on Media Ethics and CFB
The rocket ship in Houston has officially failed to launch. Following the Patriots' absolute dismantling of the Texans on Thursday Night Football, Big Cat and PFT Commenter are coming to grips with the reality that Bill Belichick might actually be a wizard. While the rest of the world is wondering how Jacoby Brissett looked that comfortable on a short week, PFT has already seen enough to make a call on the franchise's future.
Tom Brady is a system quarterback and Jacoby Brissett is better than him
Tom Brady, system quarterback. That's obvious right now. I have not seen Tom Brady—did you see how fast [Jacoby] Brissett was? That's a whole other dimension. I think he's a better quarterback than Tom Brady.
Hank, ever the Patriots homer, was chirping early, but even he couldn't distract from the fact that Brock Osweiler looks like a massive mistake for Houston. Big Cat was particularly unimpressed with the $72 million man's performance against the New England defense.
Brock Osweiler sucks
And Brock Osweiler, holy shit, I think he sucks. I don't know if that's like that vaunted Bill Belichick scheme on defense or whatever it is, but he certainly looked like a kindergartner, a really tall kindergartner out there.
Big J Journalism with Richard Deitsch
Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch joined the show for what was essentially a summit of media watchdogs. The guys tried to play the old journalism trick of starting out negative to get a compliment, but Deitsch was ready for them. They dove into the current state of sports media, specifically the rise of "debate theater" and the high-priced personalities at networks like FS1 and ESPN. Deitsch didn't hold back when describing the style of certain former Bristol stars.
Skip Bayless is a professional hockey goon of sports media
A guy like [Skip] Bayless is a professional hockey goon. He goes out and skates around the ice and punches people. The people just happen to be LeBron or Chris Bosh, etc... He is one of the brilliant sports television people who understands how to push people's buttons and say ultimate contrarian things.
The conversation also turned to the prestige of journalism schools. As an adjunct professor at Columbia, Deitsch had some strong thoughts on which institution holds the title for the most self-important students and alumni in the business.
Northwestern is the most arrogant journalism school in the country
Northwestern is a surefire number one year. And I would say everybody else is like seven, eight, nine, 10. There's no place more hubristic than Northwestern as a journalism school.
Despite the constant talk of cord-cutting and the struggles of cable networks, Deitsch remains bullish on the long-term viability of the Worldwide Leader. He believes their massive inventory of live sports makes them a permanent fixture in the landscape, even if the delivery method changes.
ESPN's future is secure despite cord-cutting
ESPN is a billion-dollar machine. They are not in trouble at all in terms of long-term standing... I think eventually we will get to a point where you will be able to purchase ESPN Singular on whatever device you use... they're still going to get millions and millions of people to make that purchase.
Stingray Steve and The Bison
Stingray Steve called in to provide his weekly SEC primer and a legendary call of North Dakota State’s upset over Iowa. After discussing Mississippi State's upcoming trip to play UMass at Gillette Stadium, Stingray issued a stern warning to any Athletic Director thinking about scheduling the powerhouse from Fargo.
Do not schedule North Dakota State because they will stomp you
Do not schedule the [Bison] because they will stomp you if you do. Add Iowa to the list of teams that have gone down to the Bison. Now Minnesota, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Iowa... have all been beaten and stomped on by the Bison.
He also laid out exactly how he expects the Bulldogs to handle their business against UMass, though he admitted their pass defense gives him some pause.
Mississippi State will beat UMass 35-14
I still think Mississippi State gets the W, but I think it'll be closer than the experts think. I'm going 35-14.
Trouble in Paradise and Hurt or Injured
During a new segment called "Trouble in Paradise," Big Cat went off on Kevin Durant's appearance on Bill Simmons' show. After Durant bashed Steph Curry’s shoes and complained about being slighted, Big Cat reached his breaking point with the newest Golden State Warrior.
Kevin Durant is a whiny baby who gets an unfair pass from the media
Kevin Durant is a fucking whiny baby. He seriously is... You were in Oklahoma City for so long, and everyone gave you a pass. LeBron James was bashed to no end for not winning a title when he was considered the best player in the NBA for a very long time.
In "Hurt or Injured," the focus shifted to the disaster that is the Cleveland Browns' quarterback room. With Cody Kessler set to start, PFT suggested that Terrelle Pryor is the only logical conclusion to the Browns' season of misfortune.
Terrelle Pryor is the Cleveland Browns' best quarterback option because everyone else will get injured
So they asked him if he was going to be willing to play quarterback because obviously if you're a Cleveland Browns quarterback, it's like being in the movie Final Destination. They've already lost two. They've got [Cody] Kessler. So Kessler is going to get hurt this weekend, too. And they said, Terrell, would you play? And he goes, I cut my finger off for the team.
To wrap up the week, the guys discussed the absolute state of the National League Wild Card race. With the Giants, Cardinals, and Mets all seemingly trying to lose their way out of the playoffs, Big Cat is starting to feel a familiar sense of dread regarding his Cubs.
Whoever wins the NL Wild Card will beat the Cubs
No one wants to win this wild card spot which means whoever wins is going to beat the Cubs... God damn it. I actually can't have that thought right now.
If Larry the Goldfish doesn't start picking winners soon, the shareholders might have to vote on a permanent change of scenery for Larry 2.
