UFC 329 was a roller coaster that ended before the seatbelt even clicked. Conor McGregor’s return was the most anticipated moment in years, but it lasted all of 15 seconds after he blew out his knee. While the internet debates whether he was hurt going in, PFT has a pretty firm theory on how the injury actually played out.

Conor McGregor likely fought on an existing injury and aggravated it during the fight

I think it was probably hurt and probably aggravated it during the fight. Now, would it shock me to know that Conor McGregor tore his ACL in training and then he just pretended that it wasn't hurt? No, that wouldn't surprise me either. But I think it was probably something wrong with it and when he went out there to try to fight on it immediately, just it told him, 'no, you can't do this.'

While confirmed by some medical reports later, the exact state of his knee pre-fight remains a point of debate.

While McGregor’s future is murky, Big Cat is all-in on the undercard star of the night. Paddy the Baddy was electric, and it feels like a passing of the torch for the promotion.

Paddy the Baddy is the next star of the UFC

Paddy the Baddy was electric. Paddy the Baddy is the next star of the UFC.

Paddy Pimblett has become a massive fan favorite and major draw, though he hasn't reached McGregor-level championship status yet. The take is largely validated by his popularity.

The World Cup of Blue Bloods

We’ve reached the semifinals and it’s a chalk-lover’s dream with Spain, France, Argentina, and England all advancing. England finally looks like they might actually bring it home after beating a Norway team that basically refused to give the ball to the best striker on the planet. PFT was baffled by the lack of service to the big man.

England was the much better team, but Erling Haaland is a one-man squad for Norway

England was a much, much better team. But... that guy that didn't pass the ball to Erling Haaland, give me a break. Haaland, you are a one man team and that's okay.

Subjective opinion on Haaland's role.

FIFA is also already looking at ways to ruin the perfection of the tournament by expanding the field. It’s a classic move by Gianni Infantino that feels more about the bottom line than the quality of the soccer.

The World Cup being expanded to 64 teams is just a monetization play by Gianni Infantino

He wanted to turn it into American sports and he wanted to use this World Cup to learn how we're able to monetize every single facet of our sports. And the fact that it was somebody whispered like, 'Hey, you know, the NCAA tournament they used to do 64, everybody loved that bracket.' He thought about that and he was like, 'that's a great idea. I think I will, I'll try to do that.'

The World Cup expansion is a fact; the motivation is subjective but widely believed to be financial.

Tony Romo Joins the Show

Tony Romo sat down with Big Cat and PFT at the American Century Championship, and it was a masterpiece. Despite the guys spending years making fun of his "I don't know Jim!" noises, Romo was a total sport. He leaned into the criticism and explained that his broadcasting style comes from a genuine place of wanting to teach the game to the audience. He even settled a decade-long mystery for Big Cat regarding a certain blank blue hat he used to wear at Duke basketball games—turns out, it was literally a free prop from a Pizza Hut commercial that he just liked so much he kept it for years.

Beyond the humor, Tony got real about the end of his career and the teams that tried to lure him out of retirement. Even though he knew he had more in the tank, it was Cowboys or nothing for him.

I could have played a few more years, but I only wanted to win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys

The only regret I guess I would have is that my job was to bring a Super Bowl to Dallas and I didn't do it... I could go somewhere else and do it... but would that be the same if I went somewhere else and did it? ... Cowboys were home.

This is Romo's personal reflection on his career choices.

He also dropped a massive bomb about his post-playing career prospects. It turns out being one of the smartest guys on the broadcast has led to some major interest from NFL front offices.

I have been offered NFL head coaching jobs by team owners

I've been offered head coaching jobs in the NFL and it's from owners and that's always flattering 'cause they know, you know the game at a high level. So I'm like, I would try and do a little more of this than that.

While Romo has been a rumored name for years, he confirms here that actual offers were on the table.

Who’s Back and Mount Rushmore

Who's Back of the week featured Big Cat preparing for his big 50/50 check at Wrigley and Dak Prescott looking like he’s been training for a heavyweight title fight rather than an NFL season. PFT is worried the extra mass might actually hinder the Cowboys' signal-caller.

Dak Prescott has gotten too muscular and it will negatively impact his ability to play quarterback

I've never seen a quarterback, a good quarterback with arms like that... There's one thing I know about quarterbacks. You want your quarterback to have like almost abnormally skinny elbows and arms.

Subjective opinion on quarterback anatomy and aesthetics.

We wrapped things up with the Mount Rushmore of Guys You Want To See Ride A Horse. It was a visual draft through and through, featuring picks like Danny DeVito and Shaq. However, the biggest realization came during the honorable mentions when Big Cat realized they left an absolute legend off the board.

Andy Reid on a horse is a massive Mount Rushmore miss

Andy Reid should have been a pick. The more, just think about it, the more Andy Reid on a horse... that is so fucking funny.

Subjective humor.

If we can't get a photo of Andy Reed in a Hawaiian shirt on a stallion by the end of the year, what are we even doing here?

Conor McGregor will fight again and eventually go on a boxing run

I think [McGregor] will fight again. And then even outside the UFC, I think he also will go on like the boxing run afterwards.

McGregor has continued to tease fights, though serious boxing matches haven't materialized in a sustained 'run' yet.

I bet LeBron James will announce his next team on Thursday using a golf ball gender reveal format

I think it's going to be like a gender reveal, but with a golf ball. And he's gonna hit the golf ball and it's gonna be the Cavs colors... Burgundy. Do it, do it Thursday. LeBron.

LeBron did not use a golf ball gender reveal to announce a team move in 2026.

Carlos Alcaraz is going to win every Wimbledon tournament going forward

I think he wins 'em all now. And Mickey Mouse why Alcaraz wasn't playing... Basically if you're watching tennis now, you just wanna see, just fast forward to the finals. If it's [Alcaraz]. And that's all you have to know.

Pending future Wimbledon results.

Aaron Donald will come out of retirement to play for the Rams this year

It's gonna happen... Aaron Donald is going to be a Ram this year and we're all just gonna have to deal with it. And it's gonna suck because the Rams are gonna be so fucking good.

Aaron Donald remained retired throughout the 2026 season.

Freddy Peralta is deliberately pitching poorly to save his best stuff for his next contract

Gotta save it for his next team. I can't explain it. He fucking sucks. I imagine he's gonna save it when he gets paid.

James Wood might be the best hitter in all of baseball right now

James Wood might just be the best hitter in baseball. He's just fucking insane. And I feel like he does this every early July going into the All-Star break. I hope he doesn't do the Home Run Derby again this year. But for the last week, he's been absolutely nuts.

Subjective assessment based on a hot streak.

Gillette Stadium and other World Cup venues will immediately switch back to artificial turf once the tournament ends

They redid all the artificial turf... all the stadiums that got replaced with grass. It's such a slap in the face to every player that plays on the stadiums where it's like, yeah, if they could put grass down for a month if they really wanted to, but as soon, the second that the money making is outta town, they're just gonna put that shit back on.

Pending the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup and the start of the NFL season.

John Harbaugh will get the Giants back to being good soon

And a good example would be with the Giants they hired John Harbaugh. That's gonna change and they're gonna get good soon. Now, next year we'll see. But I'm telling you, when someone knows the game the way he does... he knows how to build something.

The Giants' performance under Harbaugh in 2026 is still ongoing in the hypothetical timeline of this episode.

Quarterbacks need to be an alpha in the mind and be willing to lay their body on the line

You a hundred percent can lead. I've seen 20 different versions of quarterbacks leading... You have to be an alpha up here... you gotta lay your body on the line... this guy's going to hit me square in the jaw. It's like, but that's gonna help our team. Bam. Well that's what it takes.

Leadership style is subjective.
