The Detroit Lions win because of their pre-snap recognition and execution

What I love about Detroit is they win in the pre-snap, meaning they'll change the tight end, they'll change the receiver, they'll motion two or three times before the ball is snapped and they'll let Jared Goff pick a play... I call it RCE. You recognize the defense and when you know what defense they're in, now you communicate a play to beat that defense.

Subjective tactical analysis from an expert.

Wide receiver bubble screens are a waste of time and personnel

When you throw a bubble screen or a quick screen, I mean, how how many times do you see Jerry Rice run a bubble screen right now? You never saw Willie Gault run a bubble screen. You got these three Corvettes [Keenan Allen, DJ Moore, Rome Odunze]... Now let him run some routes and tell the quarterback to throw him the ball or get rid of the ball, but quit taking sacks.

This is a tactical preference, but Bears fans likely agree given the offense's failure with those plays.

Brock Purdy is a much better quarterback in person than on television

I was at the Bucs-49ers game last week and with McCaffrey back and Jauan Jennings back... Purdy is a lot better quarterback when you see him live. This guy's strong. He's, he's loose. He's gutty, man. Gritty. Love him.

I hate the three-point shot in basketball

I do love basketball. I was Bobby Knight's ball boy. I just don't like the three-point shot. I think it's too much. It's way too much three points.

Purely a matter of taste, though controversial given the game's direction.

I am having a midlife crisis at 31 years old

I feel like it's, I know the answer that it's a sign that I'm going through somewhat of a midlife crisis... I have been spending a lot of time thinking about selling it [my car] and then leasing a really nice car... Why not open a line of credit with good points, pay the lease off with that and have a nice car.

Sean McVay's decision to kick a field goal on third down was wrong — he waited too long and then did it too early at the same time

If you are going to play the game of we should kick a field goal before we try to get a touchdown, do it with like a minute and a half left the minute you get into field goal range. Why would you give away a down that you could — the harder thing to do is score a touchdown. It felt like he got caught somewhere in the middle where he just didn't really make up his mind.

This is an opinion about game management strategy, but the consensus agreed McVay's timing was poor.

Micah Parsons didn't say anything wrong about Mike McCarthy

Am I wrong to think that Micah Parsons didn't say anything wrong? I have no problem with it. It was honest. An NFL player has a limited time to be on an NFL roster. And he's like, yeah, the guys next to me who might be on their last year, those are the guys I feel for. You want your athletes and coaches to give honest answers. And when they give honest answers, we should be like, that was an honest answer. Not holy shit, how could he say that?

Patrick Mahomes would suck on the Bears. 'Cause the Bears are a joke of an organization. That's just how it works. There's nothing gonna change. They don't care about winning.

The Commanders being called frauds is actually an honor — they haven't been good enough in decades for anyone to think that highly of them

It's an honor to be called a fraud. As long as I've lived, I have yearned for somebody to think highly enough of my football team to the point where they can hate my football team. Nobody thinks that a four and 13 team is a fraud. Bernie Madoff lived a long time as a fraud and he had fucking islands that he vacationed on.

Subjective take on fandom psychology, though the Commanders did prove they weren't frauds by making the NFC Championship game.

The Big Noon Kickoff has killed Gus Johnson. He has no life left to him. He just had no energy. It was a scooping score fumble recovery for a touchdown and he called it like he was reading the newspaper.

Brian Kelly is such a loser — he complained to refs about Alabama blitzing with 15 seconds left

Brian Kelly, he's just such a loser. Did you see the clip of him complaining to the refs about Alabama blitzing eight with like 15 seconds left? LSU had their whole starters in, they were trying to score a touchdown and he's like, I can't believe you blitzed. He's just a loser, loser, loser.

Being clean, smelling good is the mark of a loser. Your must should take over. I remember there was a team, I think it was Derek Dooley when he coached at Tennessee... he blamed it on the lack of shower discipline. That's a mark of a loser head coach right there.

The 'Empowerment' coaching style of Chris Finch is better for professional players than being ground down

Finch has us prepared, but we're also like empowered as players to be adults. To be professional and come in every day, do our job and he trusts us with that responsibility. It is very empowering as a player.

The effectiveness of different coaching styles is a matter of player opinion and team results.

Anthony Edwards moves unlike any athlete he's ever seen — at his size, the way he covers ground is special

I've never seen an athlete like that be able to move the way he does. Cover ground, get downhill, cut, just maneuvering. He's not a little guy. He is a big dude. For him to move at his size the way he does, it's special. And he covers a lot of ground.

Analytics are flawed because they cannot account for the emotional impact of momentum on a football game.

There are some aspects of the game people don't believe in. It's crazy because people that truly believe in numbers, pure analytics, do not believe in momentum. They don't believe in the emotional part of the game. There's an emotion that goes throughout a player's body... this is not measurable. People that truly believe in the numbers don't understand how you can sit there and say, well, momentum has taken over.

Whether momentum is a 'measurable' fact or a psychological effect is an eternal debate in sports science, making this subjective.

John Madden's advice to ignore 'the book' and trust coaching instincts on fourth down changed my career.

I said to him, I was going by the book. [Madden] said, 'What book?' He said, 'Ron, you know enough football, you've done enough football to do these things. You know when's the right time to do it. Nobody else does.' I realized I was doing what was safe. What was acceptable. Because back then nobody went for it on fourth. From that point on, that's the way I looked at things.
