Eric Musselman on March Madness, Cranky Jim Boeheim, and PFT's Burner
The vibes are high because the calendar has finally turned to March, and Big Ben Roethlisberger is officially back with the Steelers. In a move that Big Cat finds absolutely poetic, Ben took a pay cut on a massive contract that was backloaded specifically for his old age.
Big Ben Roethlisberger taking a pay cut is the ultimate 'hero ball' move.
This might be my favorite Big Ben move ever because he took a pay cut... He signed a big money contract knowing he was going to get paid like $40 million when he was very old... And now he's hero ball, going to take a pay cut on the contract that he signed to get paid a ton of money when he was really old.
While the Pittsburgh media might be trying to spin this as a hometown hero discount, PFT remains skeptical about why anyone in the 412 would actually be excited to see more of Ben's mobility in 2021.
Steelers fans should not be excited about Big Ben Roethlisberger returning for another year.
If I was a Steelers fan, I would not be super thrilled about another year of Big Ben.
Aliens, Burners, and Cranky Coaches
Speaking of AFC North quarterbacks, Baker Mayfield apparently saw an alien in Texas. While Colin Cowherd had his usual buttoned-up response, Big Cat and PFT are standing firmly with Baker on this one. Space is huge, and believing we're alone is basically just a bad gambling strategy.
People who don't believe in aliens are losers.
People who don't believe in aliens are losers. Straight up. Why would you willingly convince yourself that aliens don't exist? It's like betting the under.
Across the sports world, Jim Boeheim is entering peak postseason form by being incredibly cranky. After Syracuse beat Clemson, Boeheim went after a reporter for being 5'2" and never playing basketball. Jake, a proud Syracuse alum, found himself in a tough spot between loyalty to his school and loyalty to the Big J journalism creed.
Jim Boeheim was wrong to attack reporter Matthew Gutierrez during his press conference.
Boeheim should not have gone after him... He was being a pro and being a good journalist. He probably was looking like a twerp, and Boeheim was just like, 'fuck you.'
Then things got personal. PFT has officially embraced the "burner lifestyle" on Twitter to vent his frustrations without damaging his main account's brand. Billy Football spent the entire week trying to track it down, but despite PFT following him and dropping clues, Billy's detective work resulted in him guessing accounts created in 2014.
The 'burner lifestyle' on Twitter is incredible and highly recommended.
The burner lifestyle is incredible. I highly recommend it to everybody... Sometimes you just want to tweet things. You don't even have to believe them necessarily. You just want to get it off your chest. It feels great.
Getting on the Muss Bus
Arkansas Head Coach Eric Musselman joined the show to discuss why the Razorbacks are peaking at the right time. He explains that his team is drastically better now than they were at the start of the season, thanks in large part to his philosophy of high-tempo play and extreme conditioning.
The March version of the 2021 Arkansas Razorbacks would beat the November version by 15 to 18 points.
This current Razorback team playing in March would probably beat our November Razorback team by about 15 to 18 is what I would roughly guess. We're more confident.
Coach Muss revealed that his secret to offensive efficiency is actually based on the Golden State Warriors' philosophy. He tracks passes per game with a specific magic number in mind: 200. According to Muss, if the ball is moving that much, the Razorbacks are nearly impossible to beat.
A basketball team that makes over 200 passes in a game is unlikely to lose.
We found if we move the ball 200 plus passes, we're not going to lose many games. And then the games that we play really poorly offensively are usually our lowest passing games.
He also gave some insight into his unique recruiting tactics, which involve recreating iconic NBA photos with high school kids and getting scouting reports from his own mother, who apparently isn't afraid to tell him when his timeout management sucks.
Fyre Fest and Draft Season
To wrap things up, the crew discussed the fallout of the new Space Jam 2 trailer. PFT is officially boycotting the film due to the "nerfing" of Lola Bunny's character design, a move he considers a significant blow to the LeBron vs. MJ debate.
The new Space Jam movie isn't worth seeing because Lola Bunny is no longer 'thick.'
Lola Bunny is no longer thick. It sucks... I don't think I'm going to go see the new Space Jam. If I can't get aroused to a cartoon character in a movie about basketball, then I don't think it's worth my money buying a ticket.
Finally, Billy Football shared his initial quarterback rankings for the 2021 NFL Draft. In true Billy fashion, he is already out on the consensus top pick, comparing Trevor Lawrence to a taller version of a certain former top recruit who didn't quite pan out in the pros.
Trevor Lawrence is just a 6'6" version of Tate Martell who has kept a 'mirage' going.
My take about Trevor Lawrence is that he is basically Tate Martell. But since he's taller... he's been able to keep the mirage up. Quarterbacks who get groomed like Trevor Lawrence in practice, they get as many reps as they want to get it right [but they aren't Tom Brady].
If the Razorbacks make a deep run, we'll know it's because Coach Muss was listening to PMT during his pregame cardio.
