The episode kicked off with the high energy of a live USMNT loss to Turkey, which naturally led into a heated debate about whether anyone actually cares about soccer. Hank tried to distance himself from his past negativity, but PFT and Big Cat weren't having it, calling him out for building straw men just to knock them down. The guys quickly shifted gears into National Sports Podcast Rapid Fire, covering everything from the Timberwolves landing LaMelo Ball to the looming threat of no baseball next season due to the CBA.

Trading LaMelo Ball to the Timberwolves makes them the most interesting team in the NBA

I think it, it instantly makes the Timberwolves like the most interesting team. Yeah. Because I have no idea what the fuck is gonna happen with this combination.

Whether a team is 'most interesting' is entirely subjective.

Big Cat expressed some genuine concern about the state of America's pastime, while PFT decided he was finished talking about Caitlin Clark until she actually brings home a ring. They also touched on Adam Silver's obsession with parity, arguing that sports actually need the villains and dynasties to keep things interesting.

Big CatBig Cat

To have a great sports league, you need a couple of dominant dynasties rather than total parity every year

Adam Silver saying the goal over time has been, and I've said it to be more NFL like where you believe your team has a shot. ... he also likes the parity, which I, I can't like parity is fun to a point. But dynasties are what get people, you know, upset and passionate. Like dynasties are, you know, teams of the decade and all that stuff. So you can't have just a new winner every single year. You need a couple dynasties.

Mount Rushmore of Household Appliances

Mount Rushmore season is officially in full swing, and things got contentious immediately. Hank and Zach (who are apparently a team now) took Refrigerator first overall, but PFT countered with the heavy hitter: Air Conditioning. PFT argued that AC is the only thing keeping the majority of the listener base alive during the summer.

Air conditioning is the best invention of all time

I'm taking air conditioning. It was number one on my list anyway. ... It's, it's the best invention maybe of all time. If you didn't have an air conditioning, I'd say like 40% of the people that listen to us would die.

Subjective ranking of inventions.

Big Cat tried to pull a fast one by drafting the "Garage Fridge" as a separate entity from the regular house fridge. He argued it serves a completely different ecosystem of beer and leftovers that regular refrigerators just can't handle. The debate even touched on the concept of "real men" and whether asking for a blanket makes you soft.

Any man who asks for a blanket because he's cold isn't a real man

Any man who is, who is cold, you're not a man. Is not a man. Not a man. ... Or if they're like, oh, I'm cold. Do you have a blanket that I can use?

Caleb Williams: QB1 and Madden Cover Star

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams joined the show to discuss being the face of Madden NFL 27. He’s fully embracing the spotlight in Chicago and making it clear that he isn’t worried about any superstitions involving the cover.

I don't believe in the Madden Curse

Was there any part of you that was like, I don't wanna say the C word, but people were like, oh, it's, you know, but I'm not thinking about that. You're not thinking about that? No, no, no, no. I don't believe in those things. I love that. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, those, those things we're not gonna mention it, but I, I don't believe in them.

Belief in a curse is subjective, but the take can be evaluated by his performance in the 2026 season.

Caleb gave us a peak into his relationship with Ben Johnson, his love for the Chicago cold, and why he doesn't care about box score watchers. He explained that he'd rather throw a ball out of bounds to save a drive than worry about his completion percentage for the haters.

I play much better in freezing weather than in any other condition because my body naturally runs hot

I love playing the cold. I actually love the cold more than any other weather. 'cause I, I just, my temperature, I run hot. And so being able to play in the cold, you know, you throw in a few, you throw in a layer or two and you know, you go out there and play and once your playing you're warm. And so whenever it's cold, I, I always tend to, I feel that I always tend to play better when it's cold and I get better at the end of the year.

Before letting him go, the guys posed the most important question of the offseason: would you call the cops if someone broke in just to tickle you for five minutes? Big Cat stood firm that you have to take that one to the grave to protect your reputation.

You shouldn’t call the cops if an intruder tickles you for five minutes then leaves

We said, no, I don't think you can call the police. I can't have that. I can't have that police report follow me around. I've got a reputation to uphold. ... I don't wanna show weakness in the press.

Joel Klatt Previews College Football 27

Joel Klatt called in to discuss being the voice of the new EA Sports College Football game. He spent nearly 90 hours in a sound booth recording thousands of lines to ensure the game felt authentic. Joel also broke down the messy situation at Texas Tech with Brandon Sorsby, calling the involvement of local judges a "disaster" for the sport's integrity.

Local judges giving favorable rulings to local teams is a total disaster for college sports

I thought that the entire thing was a disaster for college football, college football, and our collegiate athletics. A total disaster. Because if we're gonna have local judges, you know, give favorable rulings to the teams that are near them, then, then what are we doing? Like this is not, there are no rules.

Klatt is expressing a professional opinion on the state of the sport.

Looking ahead to the actual season, Joel identified eight teams that have the roster talent to win it all, though he noted that some seats in the SEC might be getting warm before the first leaf falls. He also predicted that the 12-team playoff is just a pit stop on the way to a much larger field.

The College Football Playoff will eventually expand to 24 teams

I do think we'll eventually land on 24. ... If you only have 12, we're gonna get to a point where at least half of every major conference feels like they just don't have access. Well, what makes them invest $25 million a year in their roster like that?

The playoff currently stands at 12 teams in 2026; we will see if expansion continues.

To wrap up the show, Fyre Fest of the Week featured Hank's dental trauma and PFT’s growing concern over being "love-bombed" by Brandon Aiyuk's social media activity. Zach also revealed that he is moving 800 feet down the street using only an industrial laundry basket on wheels, which is a PMT TV segment waiting to happen.

Hopefully Helen Keller hears the birthday shoutout.

The USMNT has a massive drop-off in talent between the starters and the backups

I will say that our, our second stringers, there's a pretty big fall off between the talent level of our starters and I'd say most of our, our backups, especially on the defensive end. It was not, it didn't, it didn't look inspiring. Yeah, we are, we are not a deep, deep team.

The take is a subjective evaluation of team depth.

There will not be a Major League Baseball season next year because of the CBA negotiations

Next up, we're just not gonna have baseball next year. ... In its next CBA, the league is proposing a max contract. The length of five years for free agent players switching teams, six years to retain their own players. No deferred contracts. ... It just feels like we're so far away. I don't know.

Pending the outcome of the MLB CBA negotiations for the upcoming season.

I’m opting out of all Caitlin Clark discourse until she wins something

Can I just, can I say something about the Caitlin Clark situation? I would like to opt out of all Caitlin Clark discourse until she wins something. Why are we wasting all this time? She can't win the big one. She talking about a loser. She's never, she's never won a title.

The WNBA should be doing more to protect Caitlin Clark as their cash cow

They are though. Like it is kind of crazy that they aren't like they should be protecting her. Their cash cow a little bit. ... I mean she does make them the most amount of money.

A garage fridge is completely different from a house fridge and is a uniquely vital appliance

Garage fridge. It's totally different than your regular refrigerator. ... Your garage fridge has all the beer. It has nothing that you actually need in terms of like sustenance. ... I know it's not counting, but the garage fridge is a very important, it's good discussion appliance that is needed in the ecosystem of the house. The beer, when you like old soup, old birthday cake, you get like, sometimes you get a lot of pizza. Too much pizza. ... The turkey on Thanksgiving. Yeah. When you're basting it, you gotta put it in the garage fridge.

Stats like completion percentage are not as important as winning games

I throw the ball away the most to try and keep us in advantageous positions because I know coach will go for it on fourth down. ... scramble and people count my scramble seconds of holding the ball. But, you know, it is a bunch of different things ... And stats aren't always, aren't always, you know, something that you should look at and you should look at, you know, how they win games.

Most college football programs would have rallied around their QB and pressured the local judge just like Texas Tech did

If we're honest with ourselves in college football, everybody is irrational when it comes to themselves. ... to say that this was uniquely Lubbock, I think would be false. I think this is uniquely college football. And I think almost, maybe, maybe this is wrong, but I think most programs would've acted similarly to what Texas Tech [did] and then the blowback is always everybody else pointing like, we would never do that.

College football needs to collectively bargain with the players to enforce any rules

There are eight teams with a legitimate shot to win the National Championship this year: Oregon, Indiana, Ohio State, Texas, Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami, and LSU

I think there are seven teams, maybe eight, that have a real legitimate shot to win the national championship. ... Oregon, Indiana, and Ohio State. I think you've got Texas and Georgia out of the SEC, you've got Notre Dame is, is gonna be fantastic. You've got Miami. I think Miami's gonna be incredible. And then the other team that I would throw in there is LSU.

I do think that the Kalen seat is gonna be pretty hot. I was surprised that he got that extension. I I, I was surprised. I I didn't think it was necessarily, well, I mean they can do whatever they want to do, but I, when he got that extension, I was like, well that's interesting.

UCLA and Nico Iamaleava are dark horse contenders this year and could generate serious buzz

I like UCLA. Like, I like Bob Chesney a lot. He's bringing his whole staff. He's bringing a bunch of players just like Curt Cignetti did. ... I think UCLA might be better than people think. And I think Nico Iamaleava is the type of guy, the way that he runs, the way that he throws and the potential for big upsets that could generate some, some real buzz. I like that one a lot.
