Coach Scott Drew And Bob Huggins, TNF Suck Fest Between The Bears And Commanders + Week 6 Picks And Preview

Friday, October 14, 202219 takes

Thursday Night Football happened and the Commanders and Bears bummed out all of America (-). We talk about the game and then Billy has to eat a cheesesteak with hot sauce on it and almost tears the entire podcast apart (-). Week 6 picks and preview for every game Sunday + Fantasy Fuccbois (-). We have Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew in studio to talk about winning the National Championship, coaching 18 year olds, his brother's famous shot and more (-). Bob Huggins joins us in studio to catch up, talk about Big 12 Toupees, his days at Cincy and more (-). We finish with Fyre Fest of the week (-).

Scott Drew and Bob Huggins on Big 12 Dominance and TNF Suck Fest

The vibes were at an all-time low to start Friday's show after the Commanders and Bears subjected America to one of the most pathetic displays of professional football ever televised. Big Cat is officially in the 'check the box score' phase of grief, pointing out that the Bears out-gained Washington by 200 yards despite failing to score from the five-yard line. PFT, meanwhile, is trying to find the silver lining in a win that probably just ruined his draft position.

TNF Therapy and the Snyder Sage

While the game sucked, the drama surrounding Dan Snyder is reaching a fever pitch. Between reports of private investigators and secret dossiers, it feels like the NFL is entering its final boss phase. PFT isn't just watching the news; he's tracking the strategy of an owner who knows where all the bodies are buried.

Dan Snyder is willing to take down the entire NFL with him if forced to sell

Dan Snyder's entire strategy is, if you take me out, I'm taking everybody out with you. And he is going to, Dan Snyder is willing to take down the entire NFL with him.

Snyder did eventually sell the team, but no major 'dirt' report that brought down the league materialized after his exit.

After the game recap, things took a turn for the weird when Billy Football was forced to eat a 'Pardon My Cheesesteak' doused in Sean Evans' hottest sauce after losing a bet. The segment nearly tore the podcast apart as Billy tried to negotiate the number of bites while Big Cat and PFT grew increasingly frustrated with his refusal to just be a man and eat the sandwich.

Week 6 Picks and Predictions

The slate for Sunday actually looks promising, which is a relief after Thursday. Hank is officially out on the New York hype train, calling for a reality check for both the Giants and the Jets as they face actual competition.

The Baltimore Ravens will win by 20 and the regression starts this week for the Giants and Jets

I think everyone's riding high on the Giants and the Jets. Honestly, I think maybe it's biased just living in New York and hearing the excitement... I think the regression starts this week. The Ravens win by 20.

The Giants beat the Ravens 24-20 and the Jets beat the Packers 27-10. Hank was incorrect on all counts.

Big Cat is looking at the NFC East showdown between the Cowboys and Eagles. While the Cowboys' defense has been feasting on bad teams, he thinks the Philly front is a different animal entirely.

The Eagles will cover against the Cowboys because Dallas's defense won't be able to dominate Philly's elite offensive line

I'm going with the Birds minus six against the Cowboys. I do think the Cowboys are good... The one thing that the Cowboys have been able to feast on... [is] bad offensive lines. The Eagles have arguably the best offensive line in the NFL. So it won't be as easy for [Dallas's] defense to dominate this game.

The Eagles defeated the Cowboys 26-17, covering the -6 spread. Their offensive line successfully managed the Cowboys' pass rush.

It is a mistake to bet against Patrick Mahomes as a home underdog

Mahomes never been an underdog at home. And he's also seven Oh. And one all time is an underdog against the spread. It's, this might be one of those games we look back and we're like, Wait, Patrick Mahomes is an underdog at home. How didn't everyone not hammer that?

The Chiefs lost 24-20 to the Bills. Since Buffalo was a 2.5-point favorite, Mahomes lost straight up and failed to cover.

The guys also debated which 4-1 teams are actually frauds. Big Cat isn't sold on the Vikings despite their record, and PFT is starting to think the wheels might be falling off in Green Bay.

The Green Bay Packers are currently a bad football team

Are the Packers not very good this year? The Packers might be bad, although I'm, I'm not going to fall for that trap... [but] as they stand right now are bad.

The 2022 Packers finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs, suffering several upset losses that confirmed they were no longer an elite team.

The Minnesota Vikings are not a good team despite their 4-1 record

Are we sure the Vikings are good? ... The only real good team they've played is they got absolutely Curb stomped by the Eagles. Are we sure the Vikings are good? ... If you're good, you don't have to, you don't have to, you don't have to tweet at Billy Football being like, Bro, we're good.

The 2022 Vikings finished 13-4 but had a -3 point differential and lost to the Giants in the Wild Card round, largely validating Big Cat's skepticism.

Big 12 Royalty: Scott Drew and Bob Huggins

National Champion Scott Drew joined the show to talk about building Baylor into a powerhouse. He brought a lot of conference pride to the table, noting that the Big 12's dominance isn't just a recent trend but a decade-long reality. He also broke down what he looks for when he's out on the recruiting trail.

A 'motor' is the most important attribute for a basketball recruit to have

I think it's something a lot of coaches wish more players had nowadays and that's a motor. And if a guy really plays hard, competes every possession, they're gonna get better.

This is a subjective preference in coaching philosophy.

Baylor is the winningest athletic program in the country since 2011 across football, men's basketball, and women's basketball

We are the winningest school in the country since 2011. Football, men's and women's basketball... we got 724 wins. The next highest is Notre Dame... [they are] 58 away from us.

Baylor was indeed the winningest program combined across these three sports during this window, largely due to the historic dominance of their Women's Basketball program.

Following Coach Drew, the legend Bob Huggins walked into the studio. Huggins talked about his Hall of Fame career, his days at Cincinnati, and why the Big 12 remains the premier basketball conference. He also touched on the incredible legacy of Kenyon Martin and why West Virginia will always be a basketball school at its core.

West Virginia is a basketball school

I asked Scott this question, I'll ask it to you too. West Virginia, a basketball school or a football school? Basketball school. I think that's tradition.

This is a matter of fan perspective, though the basketball program has had more recent high-level success (Final Fours) compared to the football program's results in the Big 12 era.

Kenyon Martin's comeback from a broken leg is one of the greatest feats in sports history

It blows my mind that a guy could like him, could break his leg and come back and play 11 years in the NBA... I'll bet you nobody's ever done that in the history of sports. With a broken leg and come back and... that's a lot of running, that's a lot of jumping and pounding.

While Martin had a great career, many athletes have returned from broken bones (e.g., Paul George, Joe Theismann's recovery attempt, or more recently Alex Smith). However, Martin's longevity as a high-flyer post-injury is remarkable.

To wrap things up, Billy tried to explain his new 'Vibe Analytics' theory for Fyre Fest, which involves calculating the percentage increase of a two-point conversion based on how many 'vibes' were generated by the previous turnover. It made about as much sense as a Bears goal-line stand.

If you don't love the guys at their Bears-Commanders, you don't deserve them at their Bills-Chiefs.

Monte Sweat is a better player than Chase Young

Our defensive line played well. Monte Sweat is a monster. I actually think Monte Sweat is better than Chase Young. Even when Chase Young was healthy.

While Chase Young won DROY, Monte Sweat became a Pro Bowler and has been more productive and healthy, eventually leading to him being a highly valued trade asset for the Bears.

You cannot learn how to win in the NFL by losing

As far as like just losing and taking the entire season, you can't, you can't learn how to win in the NFL by losing. That's a fact. That's a, that's just math.

This is a philosophical stance on team culture that is inherently subjective.

I'm taking the Rams -10 because the Panthers are in a dark place

I'm taking the Rams. It's a lot of points minus 10, but I feel like the Panthers are just in a dark place right now. I'm not seeing an interim coach bump for them... it's a get back game for Sean McVay.

The Rams beat the Panthers 24-10, covering the 10-point spread.

The Bengals are just not a good team right now

I don't think the Bengals are good and it's, maybe they'll figure it out, but right now I just don't think they're playing good football... nothing looks easy for them.

The Bengals recovered from their slow start to win the AFC North and reach the AFC Championship game.

The Cardinals vs. Seahawks game will be a high-scoring shootout

My favorite over is Cardinals Seahawks over 51... This to me just screams shootout. It does 51 points over.

The game ended 19-9, a combined 28 points, which was significantly under the 51.5 total.

Geno Smith is a fraud and the party is over for him in Seattle

I just think this is, this is where we see like, oh, like [Geno Smith] fraud because like, I don't know as a Jets fan, I saw him play like so many times... I just think, I think, you know, party's over. I think people are gonna figure him out. They're gonna game plan for him and he's not gonna put up the points.

Geno Smith had a breakout season, winning NFL Comeback Player of the Year and leading the Seahawks to the playoffs with high-level efficiency.

Watching Russell Wilson fail in prime time has become fascinating theater

That Russell Wilson clip that I somehow missed of him saying Bronco country, let's ride after the loss... Man I'm actually, I'm, I'm zagging on everyone being like, this sucks that we have to watch the Broncos and I kind of wanna watch Russell Wilson just continue to fail on prime time. It's fun. It's good theater at this point.

This is a subjective assessment of the entertainment value of the 2022 Broncos' struggles.

The Big 12 is the toughest conference to win on the road

When I first got to Baylor, Roy Williams said, toughest league to win on the road, you gotta win your home games. And I think that's so true in the Big 12... it is really hard to win on the road in the Big 12 and there's no feeling like when you get a road win.

Subjective opinion from a coach, though many analysts agree the Big 12 is the most competitive top-to-bottom conference.

Turnovers increase the likelihood of succeeding on a 4th down or 2-pt conversion via 'vibe' multipliers

Basically the percentage of converting a two point conversion or on fourth down basically gets increased depending on what type of turnover happens before that possession... after an interception, a fourth down conversion or a two point conversion increases by let's say 110%.

While 'momentum' is a debated concept, a 110% increase is mathematically absurd, and 'vibe' multipliers are not recognized by standard NFL analytics.
