Derek Carr, Shane Bacon, and the Mount Rushmore of Blind Spots
The sports calendar is officially in its deadest week, which naturally means Big Cat and PFT are finding ways to get mad at ESPN and the Home Run Derby. Big Cat is ready to declare the Derby dead after the Ingrid Andress national anthem performance stole the show for all the wrong reasons. While the guys looked for ways to fix the Midsummer Classic, PFT suggested a high-stakes incentive for the league's biggest offenders.
The MLB should allow players suspended for steroids back early if they win the Home Run Derby
Our idea that we had last year was one of the best, which is if you test positive for steroids, you can get out of your suspension by winning the Home Run Derby.
This led into a deep dive on ESPN's recent Top 100 Athletes of the 21st century list, which seemed specifically designed to trigger hockey fans by putting Alex Ovechkin at 54. PFT wasn't buying it, noting that the ranking is a slap in the face to the man about to break the most hallowed record in hockey.
Alex Ovechkin being ranked 54th on ESPN's Top 100 Athletes list is disrespectful to hockey
That Ovy [Alex Ovechkin] is so far down. Like Hank said, it's disrespectful to hockey, it's disrespectful to the entire country of Russia. The man is about to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the top goal scorer of all time in the NHL.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
Hank’s Hot Seat this week is Jalen Brown, but mostly for his lip-reading cameo during a Summer League game where he appeared to tell his girlfriend that Bronny James isn't a pro. PFT agreed with the sentiment, even if it’s a harsh truth for a guy currently collecting NBA checks.
Bronny James is not currently a professional-level basketball player.
The way that he said, 'I don't think Bronny's a pro' isn't that bad for [Jalen Brown] because it's also not wrong. He's not a pro. Which is probably an accurate [statement].
Big Cat took it a step further, arguing that the only reason we are even talking about a second-round pick in July is because LeBron is obsessed with his own legacy.
LeBron James only brought Bronny into the NBA to bolster his GOAT case against Michael Jordan
Some people could argue that LeBron, when he realized that he wasn't going to win six titles and match MJ, he's like, 'what else can I try to get that will, they'll say in my GOAT conversation' and having Bronny—playing with Bronny—will be there. MJ's son never played in the league.
Meanwhile, the guys discussed the existential dread of Victor Hovland, who has apparently been spending his pre-Open Championship prep questioning what happens to the human soul after death. Big Cat has a much more grounded, albeit grosser, theory on our ultimate fate.
Human beings just become worms after they die
I think what happens after you die is you get eaten by worms. We all just become worms.
Mount Rushmore of Movies/TV We’ve Never Seen
This was the most embarrassing segment in show history. Big Cat admitted he has never seen a single Star Wars movie or a second of The Fast and the Furious franchise. Max shocked everyone by admitting he has never seen The Simpsons, prompting PFT to defend the Golden Age of Springfield.
Seasons three through eight of The Simpsons are the best television ever made.
I think Seasons three through eight on The Simpsons are the best TV ever made.
Other massive blind spots included PFT never seeing The Godfather or any Marvel movie besides Black Panther, and Hank admitting he has never seen South Park or The Matrix. It was a staggering display of cultural illiteracy that somehow made perfect sense for this group.
Derek Carr on the Saints and AB
New Orleans Saints QB Derek Carr joined the show for a surprisingly candid interview. He addressed the "mascara" rumors (it’s just dark eyelashes, people) and talked about the trauma of watching his brother David get sacked into oblivion during the early Houston Texans years.
My brother David Carr is way more talented than I am.
I go back and I'm like, dude, like [David Carr] is way more talented than I am. He's 240, you know, runs a 4.6, throws the ball 85 yards. Like genius smart... he never felt football like [New York] since college. Of course you think, man, what if he was in a different situation?
Carr also shared some incredible stories from his time with Antonio Brown in Oakland. While the media focus was on the hot air balloons and frozen feet, Carr remembered a guy who was actually the hardest worker in the building when the cameras weren't rolling.
Antonio Brown is the hardest practicing player I've ever seen in my life.
I loved AB. He is the hardest practicing player I've ever seen in my life. He practices hard. He competes at just a different level. And you know, hopefully he's a hall of famer. As a player, he's insane.
He also gave massive props to his current teammates, specifically Taysom Hill, whom he considers a lock for Canton regardless of what the traditional stat sheets say.
Taysom Hill is a Hall of Fame football player
Taysom Hill is the best football player I've ever played with... that man is a Hall of Fame football player. He does everything. Throws, runs, catches, fullback, quarterback, tight end, receiver, slots, punts, blocks, punts, personal protector.
The Open Championship Preview with Shane Bacon
Friend of the program Shane Bacon stopped by to preview Royal Troon and explain why the Open Championship is the most unpredictable major of them all. He broke it down in terms even a football fan could understand, comparing the links style to a classic December matchup in Green Bay.
The Open Championship is essentially a 'Snow Game' in football terms
The open is a snow game. There's just so much unpredictability involved in a snow game. Maybe you can throw the ball, maybe you gotta run it. You don't know if you can depend on your kicker at all. That's what I look at here.
Bacon expects the wind to be a major factor and highlighted a few veterans who could navigate the "gorse" and the "postage stamp" green. When it came down to a winner, he’s looking at a 44-year-old veteran to finally get his second major.
Adam Scott will win the 2024 Open Championship
I'm going to Adam Scott. He played well last week... He's 44 years old finishing in the top 10. Hasn't finished in the top 10 in a major since 2019. But I feel like he's one of those guys... I feel like Adam is playing well.
At least now we know if the Saints season goes south, Derek Carr can always fall back on his burgeoning golf career.
