LeBron James is officially a free agent, and while the Lakers are busy babysitting Bronny’s guaranteed contract, the rest of the NBA is on high alert. PFT and Big Cat weighed the options for the King’s final act, from a homecoming in Cleveland to a nightmare scenario in the Bay Area. PFT thinks LeBron joining the Warriors would be a legacy killer.
LeBron James going to the Golden State Warriors would be a pathetic move
That's such bullshit by the way. Like if we got mad at Kevin Durant for going to Golden State, this would be pathetic. Pathetic.
While the speculation grows, Zac floated a theory that LeBron might just be done with the grind of 82 games and ready to pivot to his true passion: the golf course.
LeBron James might retire from the NBA this summer to just play golf
I think there's no way he goes to Cleveland 'cause the weather's not nice enough in the winter. With that being said, I think it's because he just wants to keep playing golf. He may just still retire. Like if he has a great summer and he is like, wow, I've been really enjoying hanging out with the boys. Why do I have to go back to basketball?
As the NBA reshuffles, Kawhi Leonard is heading back to Toronto where he actually knows how to win. Looking back on the experiment in Los Angeles, Big Cat didn't hold back on the Clippers' era of load management and disappointment.
The Kawhi Leonard era with the Clippers was an absolute failure
The Clippers Kawhi era is maybe the most unforgettable or or forgettable, I'm sorry, era of all time. Like they did nothing. Just an absolute tease.
World Cup Fever
The USMNT is heading into a knockout round match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the pressure is at an all-time high. PFT is flying to San Francisco for the match, noting that the U.S. is a heavy favorite—a rare position that makes the potential for a disaster even higher.
The USMNT match against Bosnia and Herzegovina is an absolute must-win
It's a definitely a must win... we are, I believe for the first time ever in the history of US soccer were favored in a knockout round game... if we lose against Bosnia and Herzegovina, that is, it's, it's a disaster.
Despite the nerves, PFT is predicting a comfortable victory for the Americans to keep the momentum rolling in this expanded tournament.
The USMNT will beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 3-0 or 3-1
I think we win. I think it might be like three to one, three to nothing.
Looking at the rest of the field, the tournament has been a blast, but Big Cat is worried that everyone is just playing for a silver medal. France looks like a varsity team playing against middle schoolers right now.
France is playing the World Cup on 'easy mode' and looks unstoppable
France is just playing on easy mode. Like they're not even trying and they're just dummying people... France could have played with nine guys and they probably would've won that game.
John Smoltz on the State of Baseball
Hall of Famer John Smoltz joined the show to talk about the upcoming Tahoe golf tournament and his concerns about the modern game. Smoltz, who famously successfully navigated the transition from starter to closer, is terrified by how young pitchers are being handled today. He thinks the obsession with velocity is a ticking time bomb for the human arm.
Modern MLB pitching training is genetically unsustainable and will lead to shorter careers
What clubs want is not sustainable. It's just not. Nobody has survived it... We have 25 Nolan Ryans now. That's not genetically possible. That's a manufactured against the odds where your body can't sustain it.
Smoltz also shared some incredible stories about his time with the Braves, specifically the "Professor" Greg Maddux. While the media saw a stoic mastermind, Smoltz revealed Maddux was actually a disgusting prankster who gave bad interviews on purpose just to pass the media duties to his teammates. He also proposed a radical rule change to save the starting pitcher from extinction.
MLB should tie the starting pitcher to the DH to incentivize longer starts
You tie your starting pitcher to the DH. Well, what is that gonna do? Well, that's gonna give you a competitive advantage if your pitcher goes seven or eight innings versus the four or five. That's also gonna eliminate the stupidest idea in the history of the game as an opener.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne and Dingers Only
Hot Seat/Cool Throne featured a look at the Malik Beasley sports betting drama and the ongoing inability of the WNBA to handle the Caitlin Clark phenomenon. PFT is frustrated that the league can't seem to market its biggest star without everything turning into a toxic discourse cycle.
The WNBA's inability to capitalize on Caitlin Clark and encourage good rivalries is a massive failure
It is ridiculous that this league cannot figure it out in terms of how to, a combination of marketing, protecting, but also encouraging like good rivalries with her. It's crazy that they haven't figured out how to make this work from a financial standpoint yet.
To wrap up the show, the fourth annual Dingers Only Fantasy Baseball draft took place. With a $2,000 pot and 1% of the Bush brand on the line, the stakes have never been higher. Big Cat went for a "splashy name" strategy by drafting Aaron Judge despite his injury, while Steven Che decided to cold-call Gunner Henderson mid-draft to welcome him to the squad.
Good luck to the pitchers when Steven Che finally has to take the mound for his punishment later this summer.
