Max Homa And Brooks Koepka, Nuggets Win The NBA Finals And Golden Knights Win The Stanley Cup + Guys On Chicks

Wednesday, June 14, 202314 takes

The Denver Nuggets have won the NBA Title and Jokic just wants to go home. We talk NBA Finals and Jokic being the greatest value pick in NBA History (-). The Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup and it's insane what theyve done as a franchise in 6 years (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne including Stefon Diggs and Hank turns 30 (-). Max Homa joins the show to talk US Open, having the course record at LACC, what he needs to do differently in Majors, Glenny Balls stories, and special guest his son Cam on the show (-). Brooks Koepka joins the show to talk about his incredible partying after winning the PGA, where hes at mentally for the US Open and his P's losing (-). We finish with guys on chicks (-).

Max Homa and Brooks Koepka on US Open, Nuggets and Knights Crowned

The job is finally finished and Nikola Jokic can finally go home to his horses. The Denver Nuggets are NBA Champions, and Big Cat and PFT Commenter spent the opening of the show marveling at the most relatable superstar in sports. Jokic putting his Finals MVP trophy down to pick up his daughter and then acting like he'd been told a family member died when he heard there was a parade on Thursday is peak efficiency.

Nikola Jokic is the greatest value pick in NBA history

Jokic I think now goes down is the best value pick in NBA history without a doubt... he's a better value than all these [Steve Nash, Giannis] because he went 41st overall in the draft.

While value is subjective, Jokic is widely cited as the greatest draft steal in NBA history given he is the lowest-drafted player to win Finals MVP.

PFT Commenter wasn't ready to give Jokic the crown of the greatest value pick just yet, holding onto the GOAT's legacy even if MJ went 38 spots earlier in his respective draft.

Michael Jordan was a better value pick at number three than Jokic was at 41

I still think Michael Jordan not being picked first overall and what he did becoming the best player of all time. That's a better value pick at three.

Subjective debate regarding the definition of 'value' in sports drafts.

While the Nuggets celebrated, the guys officially performed the last rites for the NBA super team. Between the Nuggets, the 2021 Bucks, and even the 2022 Warriors, the formula has shifted back to building through the draft and actual chemistry rather than just buying three All-Stars and hoping for the best.

The era of the NBA super team is officially dead

it's the official death of super teams as well. We declare that because... homegrown super teams don't play anymore. We had a decade of super teams. It's over.

The NBA has seen a period of parity following the 2023 season, though 'super teams' like the Suns still attempt to form.

But don't think PFT is letting the Nuggets off easy. He’s already moved the goalposts for their legacy before the champagne even dried.

The Nuggets need to win at least three championships to be considered true champions in my book.

They need to win at least three [championships] in order to be considered True Champions in our book because they've got Jokic and Aaron Gordon, who are both 27. Murray is 25 years old. Michael Michael Porter Jr. who actually stepped up in the last game. ... So they've got a good young core.

The Nuggets have won one championship so far (2023); their ability to reach three depends on future seasons.

Over on the ice, the Las Vegas Golden Knights finished off the Florida Panthers to win the Stanley Cup in just their sixth year of existence. Big Cat pointed out that while the Coyotes have been wandering the desert for decades looking for a home, the Knights just showed up and conquered the sport in record time.

The Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup in six years cements hockey in the desert in a way the Coyotes never could.

The Las Vegas Golden Knights Stanley Cup champions. ... It's incredible. I mean, and to be in two Stanley Cup final in that time. ... What a way to cement hockey in the desert. And this is what the Coyotes never could do.

The Golden Knights won the Cup in their 6th season and have high attendance, while the Coyotes eventually relocated to Salt Lake City in 2024 after failing to secure a permanent home.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne featured a massive milestone as Hank officially turned 30, much to the delight of Big Cat, who has been waiting for this day since Hank was a 19-year-old intern who didn't know how to use a toaster. Hank also took the opportunity to bury the Buffalo Bills after Stefon Diggs went MIA for the start of mandatory minicamp.

The Buffalo Bills' dynasty is on the Hot Seat following Stefon Diggs' absence

My Hot Seat is the Bills Dynasty. Stefon Diggs no-showed for off season training program. They asked McDermott about it and he said he was concerned about it.

OpinionFootballMediumSarcastic
The Bills' window of contention did indeed encounter major turmoil, leading to Stefon Diggs being traded in 2024 and the team failing to reach a Super Bowl.

Speaking of GOATs, Big Cat stood tall for Novak Djokovic after his French Open win, officially declaring the debate over for all the "loser simps" who still think Roger Federer is the greatest.

Novak Djokovic is the undisputed greatest tennis player of all time

Djokovic won the French Open. He has 23 Grand Slams. He's the greatest tennis player of all time... He is the greatest. And I can't wait to win more... feels good to be vindicated that I was right all along.

By the numbers (Grand Slams, weeks at #1), Djokovic is statistically the GOAT, though Federer remains a fan favorite.

Max Homa joined the show with a special guest—his seven-month-old son, Cam—to talk about the US Open at LACC. Despite having the course record (a casual 61 in college), Max was honest about why the Majors have been a struggle for him lately compared to regular Tour stops.

My struggles in Majors are due to being too anxious and trying too hard

I can just tell I'm like more anxious, trying too hard... it's not a mental block. It's like I know what I'm doing but I just feel more like high strung, more wound up instead of just playing golf.

This is a personal psychological insight from the athlete himself.

Max also weighed in on the ongoing drama regarding the "roll back" of the golf ball, suggesting that the average guy sitting on his couch watching on Sunday doesn't really care if Rory is hitting a wedge into a par five.

Most casual golf fans don't care about the golf ball being too good or moving too far.

I just don't think that for the majority of the fans that [the golf ball being too good] that big of a deal. And so it's, I'm just a little bit, I'm, I'm not so sure where I stand on it. ... I just don't know any of my many friends who casually watch golf who have themselves, 'I'm not turning this shit on on Sunday. I'm so fucking sick of watching Rory McIlroy hit Driver and then a wedge.'

While golf governing bodies have moved forward with rollback plans, the impact on fan viewership remains to be seen.

To wrap up the US Open preview, Brooks Koepka hopped on while mourning his Florida Panthers. Brooks admitted he’d been on a legendary heater since winning the PGA Championship, but he’s sobered up just in time to try and hunt down major number six. He didn't stutter when asked if he was going to win this weekend, and he's already looking at the history books for his career total.

I want to finish my career with at least 10 major championship wins.

Double digits man. That's where honestly, that's what I want. ... because I think what only three guys have ever had double digits.

Brooks Koepka currently has 5 major wins; reaching 10 is a career-long pursuit.

Brooks thinks the setup at LACC is going to be a grind, predicting a winning score that reflects a classic, difficult US Open test.

The winning score of the 2023 US Open will be 6 to 8 under par

I think honestly I think winner will probably be six to eight under.

The winning score was 10-under par, shot by Wyndham Clark.

We finished the show with Guys on Chicks, featuring a girl worried about her boyfriend's obsession with a Vietnam Veteran hat he bought at an XFL game. Don't worry, the guys agreed—that man is a keeper.

Don't bet against the fat boy.

Anything over 60 degrees in England is considered boiling hot.

If you're a British person, you shouldn't be out in the sun to begin with. ... You have to judge it on a slid scale. Come on. Anything above over 60 degrees in England is, is boiling hot.

This is a subjective and hyperbolic claim about regional temperature perception.

D3 football is better at molding young men than D1 football

So D3 football is actually better than D1 football... In terms of molding young men probably. Because I would end up, if I tried walking on a D1, I'd see D1 parties and be like, oh shit, why am I doing this?

Inherently subjective and personal to the speaker's experience.

I am going to win the US Open this weekend

[PFT: Are you gonna win?] Brooks Koepka: I mean, that's why I'm on here. Yeah.

Brooks Koepka did not win the 2023 US Open; he finished T17.
