Wednesday, March 17, 202116 takes

We start the show in a world where Big Cat doesn’t know Andy Dalton is about to be the Bears QB and PFT celebrates Ryan Fitzpatrick’s signing in Washington ( - ). Breaking Moos brings us the Dalton move and instant reaction ( - ). Hot seat/cool throne and Billy’s long awaited QB bracket ( - ). Mark Titus joins the show to break down the Bracket, Brad Stevens to Indiana, sleepers, how good Gonzaga is and Big Ten excuses just in case ( - 1). We finish with FAQ’s.

Mark Titus on Bracket Busters, Gonzaga's Dominance, and Andy Dalton to the Bears

NFL free agency is in full swing, and while PFT is walking on sunshine after the Washington Football Team secured the most electric bridge quarterback in league history, Big Cat spent the first twenty minutes of the show blissfully unaware of the tragedy awaiting him.

PFT is fully leaning into the Fitzmagic era, even if it means preparing for the inevitable rollercoaster of emotion that comes with a guy who either throws five touchdowns or five picks on any given Sunday.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is the most fun quarterback Washington could have hoped for

I am under no illusion that Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to come in and immediately turn the football team into a Super Bowl contenders because we already are Super Bowl contenders, but he is the most fun quarterback that I could have hoped for, besides [Jameis] Winston. He makes every week fun. No matter what happens, he's going to have some games where he throws for five touchdowns, he's gonna have some games where he throws for five interceptions.

Fitzpatrick started only one game for Washington in 2021 before suffering a season-ending hip injury, providing very little 'fun' or play.

While the guys broke down the flurry of moves, including the Patriots' uncharacteristic spending spree and the Raiders' questionable decision to dismantle their offensive line, Big Cat offered a helpful lens for fans trying to wrap their heads around the massive numbers being thrown at players like Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry.

Every NFL contract is effectively a two-year deal

The way to look at every single contract in the NFL is it's a two-year deal. No matter how many dollars they throw out there, how many years they throw out there, everyone just signed a two-year deal and then they can cut. If you look at every contract like that, it all kind of makes sense.

While not literally true for every deal, the majority of veteran NFL contracts allow teams to move on after two seasons with manageable dead money.

The Breaking Moos: Andy Dalton is a Bear

The episode took a dark turn for Big Cat mid-show when the news officially broke: the Chicago Bears signed Andy Dalton. Watching a man's soul leave his body in real-time is peak PMT. After holding out hope for Russell Wilson or a franchise-altering trade, Big Cat was forced to confront the reality that the Bears are simply who we thought they were.

The Bears are destined to never have a franchise quarterback

The Bears are just destined to never have a quarterback. Every time the Bears have the chance to possibly do a franchise-altering move, they find a way not to do it. It doesn't matter if the Bears have a top draft pick because we had a top draft pick and we drafted Mitch Trubisky. This sucks the soul out of my tone of be.

Historically, this has remained true for the Bears, as neither Dalton nor subsequent picks like Justin Fields have settled the position.

Mark Titus Breaks Down the Bracket

Friend of the program Mark Titus joined the show to save us from NFL misery and talk some March Madness. The conversation immediately went to the "Brad Stevens to Indiana" rumors, a meme Titus has successfully willed into his own personal reality. Once we got past the coaching carousels, Titus started naming names for who is actually a fraud this year. He started at the top of the bracket, pointing his finger directly at the Cougars.

Houston is the number one fraud team among the tournament's top five seeds

Houston is my number one fraud. They're 24 and three. One of their losses was to Wichita State, they lost to East Carolina. These are very bad losses. Houston to me is what people think Gonzaga is. That's what Houston is now.

This take was famously wrong as Houston reached the Final Four in the 2021 tournament.

PFT isn't just listening to the Houston hate; he’s actively rooting for the downfall of the chalk for financial gain.

Rutgers will defeat Houston in the second round of the tournament

I am betting on Rutgers. If Rutgers wins the second round game [against Houston], I win a Bitcoin.

Rutgers lost a heartbreaker to Houston 63-60 in the second round.

The conversation shifted to the blue bloods and the usual suspects. Titus isn't buying the hype on a few Power Five teams that might have some name recognition but lack the offensive firepower to survive the first weekend.

Tennessee is a fraud because their offense is too bad to compete for a title

Tennessee's been a little disappointing. I don't know if they're frauds, but like coming into the season, I felt like they were good enough to maybe make a Final Four run and they've been just kind of mediocre. Their offense is really bad. Their defense is good, but it's not good enough to make up for how bad their offense is.

Tennessee lost in the first round to Oregon State.

Villanova is a fraud team in the tournament without Collin Gillespie

Villanova's gotta be up there [as a fraud] just because they don't have Collin Gillespie anymore. I don't trust Villanova without a point guard.

Villanova proved more resilient than expected, reaching the Sweet 16 before losing to eventual champion Baylor.

When it comes to the favorites, Titus was clear: this isn't your older brother's Gonzaga. This is a different beast entirely. He argued that anyone comparing this squad to previous Bulldogs teams that flamed out early hasn't been paying attention to the sheer talent on the floor.

This Gonzaga team is significantly better than the 2017 team that reached the title game

If you think Gonzaga is just like every other Gonzaga team in your mind, you're a moron. This team would beat the 2017 team, that was two minutes away from a national title, by like 10 or 15 probably. They have four guys that were finalists for their position awards in the entire country.

This 2021 Gonzaga team finished the regular season undefeated and reached the National Championship game, becoming the first team since 1976 Indiana to go into the final game undefeated.

Big Cat, ever the optimist for his conference, has already found the loophole that allows him to claim a Gonzaga championship for the Big Ten. If Jalen Suggs is the one cutting down the nets, the Midwest gets the credit.

A Gonzaga national title counts as a victory for the Big Ten because of Jalen Suggs

Gonzaga's best player, Jalen Suggs, where's he from? Minnesota. That's a Big Ten win if Gonzaga wins. This is Richard Pitino's fault for not keeping him in state. He's a football player, he's the most Big Ten player that's ever not played in the Big Ten. I am officially a Gonzaga fan because they are part of the Big Ten.

Hot TakeCBBScorchingSarcastic
While Suggs is from Minnesota, Gonzaga is a member of the West Coast Conference. Gonzaga did not win the title anyway.

Sleepers and Locks

Before letting Titus go, the guys touched on the sleeper teams that could actually make some noise. While Alabama is getting plenty of buzz for their modern offensive approach, Titus still finds himself looking at West Lafayette for a team that could play spoiler.

Purdue is the best sleeper team in the tournament because they never give up

Purdue is a great sleeper pick. They don't give up. They claw back into games. They're so young, they almost don't understand when you're supposed to fold. Trevion Williams is awesome... they have shooters. I like Matt Painter as like the second best coach behind Izzo probably in the Big Ten.

Purdue lost in the first round to 13-seed North Texas.

Finally, the FAQ segment featured a massive high-stakes promise from PFT. Usually, hair bets are reserved for Super Bowls, but the arrival of the Red Revolver in DC has raised the stakes for the Washington Football Team's postseason success.

I will cut my hair if Ryan Fitzpatrick wins a playoff game for Washington

When Ryan Fitzpatrick wins a playoff game, I will cut my hair. For the football team. I'll say it with my chest: when Ryan Fitzpatrick wins a playoff game, I will cut my hair.

Fitzpatrick never won a game for Washington, let alone a playoff game, so the hair remained long.

Good luck to everyone's brackets, except for whoever is playing against Wisconsin in the first round.

Texas is a legitimate threat in the tournament because of their 'crazy' experienced guards

I'm starting to believe in [Texas]. The thing I love about Texas is they have experienced guards who are a little crazy in a good way. Like Matt Coleman and Courtney Ramey... they are out of their minds in the best way that you want a basketball player to be. I love that idea of them in March.

Texas lost in the first round to Abilene Christian in a massive upset.

Michigan State will beat UCLA in the play-in game

I like Michigan State [to win the play-in game]. UCLA is free-falling. They were pretty good a couple months ago and that's never something you want to say about a team in March. Lock me in on Michigan State winning.

This turned out to be a legendary miss; UCLA beat Michigan State in overtime and went on a miraculous run to the Final Four.

Alabama is good enough to win the national title with their 'threes and layups' formula

Alabama is good enough to win a national title. They have the formula as well. They shoot basically nothing but threes and layups and they play unbelievable defense. You add all that up and that's pretty good too.

Alabama reached the Sweet 16 but lost to UCLA.

Wisconsin will make a tournament run because Roy Williams and North Carolina are turnover machines

I have talked myself into Wisconsin making a run. I said to myself, you know what? Roy Williams, he's not a good coach. [North Carolina] are going to turn the ball over. They're going to win, they're going to hit their jump shots. I've done that.

PredictionCBBHotSarcastic
Wisconsin beat UNC in the first round but lost to Baylor in the second round, so they didn't really make a 'run'.
