Steve Smith Sr. and Billy Football on the Jets' Nightmare and Texas Being Back
The vibes in the New York area are at an all-time low after Aaron Rodgers lasted exactly four snaps in a Jets uniform. Big Cat and PFT opened the show trying to process the absolute insanity of Monday Night Football. While Big Cat has spent over a decade hating on Rodgers in the NFC North, even he had to admit that watching the Jets' savior go down before completing a single pass was a level of scripted tragedy only this franchise could achieve.
The unluckiness of the New York Jets is unrivaled in professional sports
The power of the unluckiness of the New York Jets is unrivaled in professional sports. I feel bad for Mike Greenberg... but if I'm in the trust tree, it was also kind of funny... that they had six months where it's like we finally solved our quarterback situation... and then four plays in, it's like, well, we're fucked again.
PFT pointed out the sheer ridiculousness of the situation, especially with the Jets actually winning the game thanks to a punt return touchdown. However, the guys have no time for the talking heads trying to put qualifiers on the victory.
Announcers need to stop saying 'asterisk' on wins
I don't know why it's become a thing that announcers are now saying asterisk. They did it for the Lions game too. Tarico did the asterisk for No Kelsey, Chris Jones. And then last night they're like, well, asterisk there was tripping on the part return. Who the fuck cares. The Wind's a win.
Speaking of the Jets, the search for a replacement is already hitting the desperation stage. While names like Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan are being floated, the guys aren't exactly sold on the available veteran market, especially given the state of the offensive line.
Matt Ryan would be worse than Zach Wilson behind the Jets' offensive line
I don't know if Matt Ryan would be worse than Zach Wilson... I think he would just because their offensive line is a big question mark. And you're putting Matt Ryan back into harm's way. He can't move.
The fallout of the game also led to some Josh Allen slander after a four-turnover performance. Despite the disastrous night, PFT is still standing by his guy when compared to other NFC East quarterbacks who had much easier Week 1 assignments.
Josh Allen is still a much better quarterback than Dak Prescott
As far as I'm concerned, Josh Allen's still much better quarterback than Dak Prescott. Dak had a better week one. Yes... but you saw something different [last night].
College Football saw a massive shift in the landscape over the weekend. The PAC-12 is currently looking like the best conference in America, which is peak irony considering the conference is essentially on its deathbed.
The PAC-12 is currently the most dominant conference in the country
The lead story right now is the PAC 12 is the most dominant conference in the country. They have eight teams in the top 25 right now... It's insane to me that the PAC 12 has been around for a hundred years and they just timed it two years too late.
The biggest story, though, was in Tuscaloosa. Texas didn't just beat Alabama; they looked like the more physical, more talented team from start to finish. Big Cat was there in person and saw the shift in power firsthand, noting that Nick Saban's squad looked uncharacteristically human.
Texas's victory over Alabama was not a fluke; the Longhorns were simply the superior team
This officially Texas being back because like it didn't feel like the memes... they just went into Alabama and whooped their ass. It wasn't some fluke thing... I think Texas is just a very good team... Alabama was just the inferior team on the field on Saturday.
This version of Alabama is not good enough to be a CFP contender
This version of Alabama is not good or not good enough to be a college football [contender]... Saban is the greatest college coach of all time, and he does adapt better than any college coach. But he has to adapt again.
Future Hall of Famer Steve Smith Sr. joined the show to talk about what it means to be a "dog" at the wide receiver position. He broke down the nuances of route running that casual fans miss, like how a veteran receiver has to tempo their routes when the "marathon speed" starts to fade with age. He also gave some love to the current crop of talent, specifically noting a certain Seahawk and a Jaguars comeback story.
The Seahawks' secondary is extremely dangerous and overlooked
Seattle Seahawks, if they can get a pass rush generated, I think they're gonna be pretty good. Their secondary is bananas, bro. I'm talking about Their secondary is very dangerous. Woolen is, he's not getting a lot of credit. But that young man... I think he's gonna lock down some receivers this year.
Calvin Ridley is on a mission and is going to 'ball' this year
Calvin Ridley is going ball. That's a man on a mission. And some corners are gonna have to deal with that man being on a mission.
Before letting him go, Steve Smith Sr. got into a heated debate with Big Cat about the future of the Carolina Panthers. A bet was officially brokered: if the Panthers win more than four games, Steve gets some free gear; if they win four or fewer, he’s sending the guys some of his signature bent-brim hats.
The Carolina Panthers will win four or fewer games this season
Panthers are gonna win three games... I'll give you four games for the Panthers. Panthers are gonna win four games... If the Panthers win four or less games, we want some Steve Smith signed hats.
The Carolina Panthers will win more than four games this year
They'll win more than four games... I think they could sneak in [to the playoffs]. I don't think it's a fluke. If the Panthers win more than four games, whatever little promo you did, I want some joggers.
To wrap up the Jets talk, the guys brought in a true white whale: Billy Football. Billy was in full-blown delusion mode, trying to convince himself that Zach Wilson is ready for the spotlight. He even floated a theory that the only way to save the season involves a certain retired legend with family ties to the New York area.
Tom Brady joining the Jets this season is a real possibility
Someone who has a lot of family based here coming out of retirement... Tom Brady. I mean, it could happen. It's the craziest thought. It really isn't. That's the only one. His kids are here. He has a place. That's the only person where it's like, yeah, let's take a chance on that.
It’s a long season, and if we’ve learned anything, it’s that the Jets will always find a way to make it interesting, for better or (usually) worse.
At least we still have the Utah gremlins to keep us entertained on Saturday nights.
