Michael Silver on the Shanahan Tree, Jayden Daniels' Masterclass, and Jags in Hell
PFT returned from Cincinnati a changed man after witnessing Jayden Daniels put on an absolute clinic on Monday Night Football. The energy in the studio was electric as the guys broke down a game where neither team punted or turned the ball over, a statistical anomaly that hasn't been seen in decades. While the Bengals moved to a terrifying 0-3, the story was entirely about the rookie quarterback in D.C. who looked like he’d been playing in the league for ten years.
Jayden Daniels' Monday night performance was the best game I've ever seen a quarterback play for the Commanders
What I saw last night made me feel emotions that I have not felt in my cold dead football heart in decades... what really got me excited about Jayden was how he handled like third downs, fourth downs. He was cool. He was directing guys around. He was calm in the pocket... I think that's the best game I've ever seen a quarterback play for my team.
PFT was so high on the performance that he was ready to crown Jayden the king of the division and potentially the sport. Even Max, a noted Eagles homer, had to concede that the Commanders finally have a guy, especially considering the financial flexibility of a rookie deal compared to the massive bag Jalen Hurts just secured.
Jayden Daniels is already the best quarterback in the NFC East and potentially the entire NFL.
But yeah, he's, I mean, I, I don't know. It's one game. But he's the best quarterback in that division. Maybe even in the entire league.
I would take Jayden Daniels over Jalen Hurts due to the rookie contract, and I wish Daniels were not in the NFC East.
I wish Jayden Daniels was not in the NFC East... he looks very good... [I would take] any rookie on a rookie contract [over Jalen Hurts].
The fallout for the Bengals is much grimmer. Big Cat noted that the historical odds for an 0-3 team making the playoffs are essentially nonexistent, and the defense looks like a sieve that might be beyond repair. Beyond the X's and O's, there is a clear aesthetic issue in Cincinnati that needs immediate attention.
The Bengals are in deep trouble after starting 0-3 with a defense that can't be fixed
I do think the Bengals are in trouble... only six of the 225 teams that started 0 and 3 in the Super Bowl era have made the playoffs... I don't know where the fixes are on defense. The only fix I have for the Bengals is Joe Burrow has to change his hair color. You can't be 0 and 3 with those frosted tips.
Joe Burrow must change his hair color and get rid of the frosted tips because you cannot lose games with that look.
The only fix I have for the Bengals is Joe Burrow has to change his hair color. You can't be 0-3 with those, with that hair... get rid of the frosted tips Joe... you gotta cut your hair... you can't lose with Frosted Tips.
The Jags Are Broken and Josh Allen is Toying with People
While the Commanders were ascending, the Jaguars were descending into a deep, dark abyss. Trevor Lawrence looked completely lost, at one point performing a "spin to nowhere" that had the guys questioning if the franchise quarterback might actually be a bust. It’s a complete disaster for Doug Pederson, especially after owner Shad Khan hyped this as the best roster the team has ever had.
Trevor Lawrence might actually stink, and his regression is being overshadowed by Jayden Daniels' success.
Yeah, he might stink. And I think Shad Khan said before the season, this is the best team that the Jaguars have ever assembled. So to me that does not sound good for Doug Pederson... He just spun into his own guy [spin to nowhere].
On the flip side, Josh Allen played a perfect half of football and sat on the bench for the rest of the night. Big Cat wasn't hesitant to remind everyone where Allen stands in the hierarchy of the league, even if he doesn't have the rings of Mahomes.
Josh Allen is the second-best quarterback in the NFL
Josh Allen is what a franchise quarterback looks like. And we've said it a million times. Just because he's not Patrick Mahomes doesn't mean he's [not] the second—he is the second best quarterback in the NFL.
College Football and the Heisman Debate
Transitioning to the college game, the focus turned to Colorado and the absolute insanity of Travis Hunter. He played nearly every single snap of their double-overtime thriller, forcing a fumble at the goal line to win the game after already putting up massive numbers at receiver. Big Cat and PFT are officially leading the charge to get him the trophy he deserves, regardless of the "Deion fatigue" felt by the rest of the media.
Travis Hunter should be the Heisman winner because he is the best football player in the country
Travis Hunter should be the Heisman. And maybe it's because I bet on him pre-season, but Travis Hunter should be the Heisman... if you actually voted for Heisman how it should be voted—best player, not how every award now gets voted on... Travis Hunter should be your Heisman Trophy winner because he is the best football player in college football.
Michael Silver on NFL Revolutions
NFL writer Michael Silver joined the show to discuss his new book, *The Why Is Everything*, which traces the history of the Shanahan coaching tree. Silver provided incredible behind-the-scenes stories from the 2012 Washington staff that featured Kyle Shanahan, Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, and Mike McDaniel. He also pulled back the curtain on how Mike Shanahan still influences the 49ers today.
Mike Shanahan uses a virtual system called 'Shana-Cam' to watch all 49ers meetings and film, though calling him a 'shadow GM' is an exaggeration.
There is something at 49ers headquarters referred to as the 'Shana-Cam', where Mike Shanahan needs to watch meetings and practice ASAP virtually... Some people think he's the shadow gm. I think that's an exaggeration. But this is incredible.
Beyond the coaching X's and O's, Silver touched on the business side of the league. He didn't hold back on his assessment of how certain historic franchises are run, specifically pointing out that the organization in Chicago hasn't exactly kept pace with modern marketing or revenue generation.
The Chicago Bears are the most under-marketed entity in American commerce
I don't believe that there is a more under-marketed entity in American commerce than the Chicago Bears... in this city... it's a football town... and with the Bears, you know, in '85 and like that was, it was just, it engulfed everything. And they've been living off it since.
Silver finished the interview with some legendary stories about Dennis Rodman, Madonna, and Jeff Fisher, proving that the old-school era of NFL reporting was a lot more wild than the sanitized version we often see today. It was a perfect blend of football history and the kind of degenerate storytelling that makes PMT what it is.
If Joe Burrow doesn't cut those frosted tips before Sunday, the Bengals season is officially buried.
