Rob Lowe, OBJ to the Rams, and NFL Week 10 Preview

Because the guys are taking a rare Thursday night off, this episode features some pre-recorded time travel where they predict the Ravens and Dolphins result. PFT Commenter went full contrarian to start the show, fading the heavy favorite in Baltimore in hopes of a viral moment if the Dolphins managed to pull off the impossible.

The Dolphins will beat the Ravens outright on Thursday Night Football

I'm telling you right now, the Miami Dolphins are ready to play some football tonight. The Baltimore Ravens are in big trouble. Tua [Tagovailoa] is coming back... They're going to win outright tonight.

The Dolphins upset the Ravens 22-10 on Thursday Night Football.

Big Cat isn't ready to give up on the Ravens though, mostly because Lamar Jackson has finally killed the narrative that he can’t come back when trailing by double digits.

Lamar Jackson is taking the step to elite quarterbacking

[Lamar Jackson] was the first part of his career, the first three seasons of his career, 0-6, went down double digits in the second half. What is he, 4-0 this year? Coming back from down double digits, he can do it all. He is taking the step to, dare I say it, elite quarterbacking.

This is subjective but grounded in 2021 season stats where Lamar had several comeback wins.

The OBJ Source Off

In the middle of the show, a massive 'source off' erupted between Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport regarding Odell Beckham Jr.’s destination. After a few minutes of chaos and deleted press releases, it became official: OBJ is heading to Hollywood. Big Cat is skeptical of the fit, noting that the Rams are starting to look like a collection of Pro Bowlers rather than a cohesive unit.

The Rams are dangerously close to super-team status, which never works out

But now the Rams are dangerous. Well, they probably were already there, but they're dangerously close to the super team tag. And that never works out.

This 'super team' actually worked out perfectly, as the Rams won Super Bowl LVI that same season.

Beyond the OBJ news, Cam Newton made his triumphant return to the Carolina Panthers. While the reunion is great for the vibes and the bank account, PFT Commenter had a more creative suggestion for how the former MVP should be utilized in the modern NFL.

Cam Newton should move to tight end

I would like to see Cam [Newton] move to tight end. I still think that Cam would be an awesome tight end right now. He's big enough. He's strong enough still. He's fast enough to get the job done as a tight end.

Cam Newton never switched to tight end and remained a quarterback until his retirement from the NFL.

NFL Week 10 Picks and Preview

Moving into the weekend slate, the guys are looking for separation. Hank is officially in 'Soupy Mode' with his Patriots, believing that a win over the Browns could be the signal that a Super Bowl run is actually on the table.

The Patriots will win the Super Bowl if they beat the Browns convincingly

As I've said the whole season, last week was going to decide how I feel about the rest of the season. They won. I'm now in 'soupy' mode. So if they're going to go to the 'soupy', they've got to win this game [against the Browns] convincingly.

The Patriots did win this game (45-7), but they lost in the Wild Card round to the Bills.

For the rest of the board, PFT Commenter is leaning on a specific betting trend that favors teams coming off a bad week against teams that just covered the spread. This logic led him straight to the Cowboys, despite their embarrassing performance against Denver.

The smart bet this season is on teams that failed to cover the previous week when playing against teams that did cover

Betting this year, it's smart to bet on teams that didn't cover the previous week when they're playing against teams that did cover the previous week. In 2021, those teams are 39-14-1... I like the Cowboys, minus 9.5.

The Cowboys (who didn't cover vs Denver) blew out the Falcons (who covered vs Saints) 43-3, validating the trend for this specific week.

Big Cat is also looking for a bounce-back from Dallas, specifically because the Falcons lack the personnel to exploit the defensive blueprint the Broncos provided last week.

The Falcons are a bad matchup for the Cowboys because they cannot exploit the Cowboys' run defense

What the Cowboys' weaknesses are, they were exposed last week against the Broncos because the Broncos were able to run all over them. Falcons can't really run the ball. And they also don't really have a pass rush. So I think Dak [Prescott] will have a ton of time.

The Falcons were held to 2.8 yards per carry and zero sacks while Dallas scored 43 points.

Rob Lowe on the 80s and Magic’s Tweets

Friend of the program Rob Lowe joined the show to discuss his podcast 'Literally' and his obsession with the 80s. He gave a legendary breakdown of why 1985 was the peak year for fame, citing a lack of internet and a general consensus that cocaine was actually good for you. He also provided a massive update on the investigation into Magic Johnson's incredibly literal Twitter feed.

Magic Johnson doesn't physically write his own tweets

I found out that Magic Johnson does not physically do any of the tweets, which may explain some of it. It's articulated clearly across the room or while he's doing 17 other things as a titan of industry. And then there is a woman whose job is to figure out what he's talking about and make it a tweet.

This has been widely accepted as true by fans and media after this and other similar reports.

Rob Lowe also admitted that while he stays in great shape, he's curious about the 'Marvel Doctor' that seems to turn every actor into a shredded superhero overnight.

Hollywood actors in Marvel movies use a 'Marvel doctor' for HGH

I want to be in [a Marvel movie] just so I can meet their 'doctor feel good'. I want an excuse to have Elvis' bag man come in and hook me up. Because my man, Kumail Nanjiani... I see him in Eternals. And I'm like, 'whatever's going on, I want some of that.'

This is a widely speculated industry secret but cannot be definitively 'proven' as fact without medical records.

Fyre Fest of the Week

To wrap things up, the guys discussed their Fyre Fests including Big Cat’s first parent-teacher conference and Billy Football being thanked for his service on the subway by confused AWLs. PFT Commenter also turned his sights toward college basketball, claiming that the pressure is officially on for Coach K in his final season.

Coach K is currently coaching for his job and legacy

I think that their [Duke's] players are so good that Coach K would be on the hot seat if he didn't win a title with these players. He is coaching for his job. We need to update that as the year goes on because if Coach K does not win a title with this extremely talented team, this would go down as the worst job coaching that he ever did in his entire life.

Hot TakeCBBFireSarcastic
Duke lost in the Final Four to North Carolina; while Coach K didn't 'lose his job' (he retired), many fans consider failing to win with Banchero a missed opportunity.

Hopefully Billy remembers to bring his backpack and laptop home for the weekend.

Russell Wilson is currently the number one quarterback in the NFL

Lamar [Jackson] is number two... My number one's Russell Wilson.

Wilson was returning from injury and the Seahawks struggled; he was not the consensus #1 in 2021.

Cam Newton is the best college football player of all time

Cam Newton getting cut by the Patriots and then playing this entire season for Auburn would have been electric. Yeah, he's the best college football player of all time. Cam Newton's Auburn team, he was doing it himself... the offense stunk out loud.

Subjective all-time ranking, though Newton's 2010 season is widely considered one of the greatest single seasons.

If the Chiefs lose this weekend, they are done as contenders

I think if the Chiefs lose, I'm taking the 'Dunn' chain out. I'm thinking about throwing it on the Chiefs... I'm done thinking the Chiefs are just going to flip the switch and become the Chiefs of two years ago.

The Chiefs won this game (41-14 over the Raiders) and eventually made the AFC Championship game.

The Saints +3 is a great play against the Titans because the matchup makes no sense

I'm going to go with the Saints, plus three at the Titans. And this is my 'it doesn't make any sense' game of the week. I don't want to bet on the Saints, but the fact that I don't want to bet on them so hard makes me want to bet on them harder.

The Titans won 23-21, meaning the Saints +3 covered the spread.

The Panthers +10.5 is a lock against a Cardinals team in a major let-down spot

I like the Panthers plus 10.5 against the Cardinals... I just think this is Cardinals off of an emotional big win with all their backups in San Francisco... Cardinals go, win big game with Colt McCoy in San Francisco, come home, maybe lay an egg against the Panthers.

The Panthers beat the Cardinals outright 34-10.

The NFL covered up Aaron Rodgers ignoring COVID protocols for ratings

I'm pretty sure that the NFL, according to their own rules, should have suspended Aaron Rodgers. Should have fined him. And they're covering up the fact that he just ignored all the protocols because he's Aaron Rodgers and the rules don't apply to him. And they're like, 'You know what? We could have Aaron Rodgers sit out for multiple weeks, but I really like ratings.'

While the NFL did fine Rodgers, the claim of a 'cover up' for ratings is a subjective interpretation of league business, though the fine was notably small.

The Chiefs are officially in the 'prove it' category before I believe they can return to their old form

The Chiefs are officially in the 'they-have-to-prove-it-to-me' category before I believe that they are going to be the team that they have been in the past.

The Chiefs immediately 'proved it' by winning their next eight games and reaching the AFC Championship.

The Washington Football Team's strategy is to bring good teams down to their level and make every game a 'shit-fest'

The Washington football team [is] being like, hey, we're going to bring a good team down to our level and just make you play a real shit fest.

Washington beat Tampa Bay 29-19 in a game that was indeed a grinding, slow-paced affair typical of PFT's description.

Jimmy Butler is the top-one player in the NBA

Jimmy Butler is a king, top one player in the NBA. He got fined due to attempting to escalate the situation and also for not snitching.

While Butler is elite, he has never been considered the literal #1 player in the NBA by any consensus or major award.
