Eagles Super Bowl 52 Recap and Greg Olsen on Cam Newton’s Hieroglyphics

The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions, and the world as we know it has officially shifted. Big Cat and PFT Commenter sat down to process a game that featured zero defense, a backup quarterback catching a touchdown, and the greatest dynasty in NFL history getting clipped by a guy nicknamed Big Dick Nick. While the Patriots lost, Big Cat pointed out that they at least keep things interesting for the viewers.

The Patriots play the best Super Bowls and their games are always entertaining

The Patriots play the best Super Bowls. If you look at their eight Super Bowls that they've played in, they have always been entertaining, and that one was maybe one of the most entertaining.

The Patriots' Super Bowls under Brady and Belichick were almost all decided by one score and featured legendary plays, supporting this opinion.

The game really turned on Doug Pederson’s willingness to stay aggressive when most coaches would have turtled. Big Cat noted that Pederson succeeded where other AFC teams failed by never letting his foot off the gas.

Doug Pederson beat the Patriots by taking the huge risks that the Jaguars refused to take

Doug Pederson did what the Jaguars refused to do in the AFC Championship game. He knew that to beat the Patriots, you have to take one or two huge risks, and that's the only way you can do it. And he did it with the fourth down call where Nick Foles caught the touchdown.

The Eagles' aggression on fourth downs is widely credited as a major reason for their victory over New England.

The Malcolm Butler Mystery and Nick Foles' Future

Of course, the biggest story outside of the actual score was the benching of Malcolm Butler. PFT Commenter had a very specific theory regarding a certain NFC South coach and a gentleman’s agreement, while Big Cat leaned more toward the idea that Bill Belichick is simply a psychic who saw a bad performance coming.

Bill Belichick has the powers to envision if a player will be terrible in a game before it happens

Belichick has been so good for so long that I actually do think he has the powers to envision, yeah, Malcolm Butler cannot play in this game because he's going to be terrible. That's the only thing I could think of [for the benching].

While Belichick is a genius, sitting Butler proved incorrect as the Patriots' defense was carved up by Nick Foles for over 500 yards.

On the other side of the ball, Nick Foles went from a guy people were worried about to a guy who is about to get paid like a franchise starter. Big Cat is already eyeing a specific destination in the AFC North for the Super Bowl MVP.

Nick Foles will get 'a lot of money' and Cleveland will try to sign him

How much money would you pay Nick Foles next year? He's going to get a lot of money. Cleveland... Cleveland comes knocking for Nick Foles. Nick Foles would be the perfect addition to that [quarterback jersey], you have to admit.

Foles eventually signed a 4-year, $88M deal with the Jaguars in 2019. The Browns did not sign him; they drafted Baker Mayfield in 2018.

PFT Commenter also pointed out that this loss might be the start of a trend for Tom Brady, specifically when he faces quarterbacks who look like they might struggle with basic allergies.

Tom Brady can't beat 'ugly' or 'mouth-breathing' quarterbacks like Eli Manning and Nick Foles

What the game did prove to us was our theory that Tom Brady sucks against ugly quarterbacks and mouth-breathing quarterbacks... You got two against Eli [Manning], you got one against Nick Foles. It's like an ugly duckling, beautiful swan situation where you underestimate your competition if you're that much more attractive than they are.

While funny, Brady has beaten many quarterbacks of varying levels of conventional attractiveness. Foles and Manning are his only Super Bowl losses to date (2018).

Greg Olsen on the U and Life After Football

Pro Bowl Tight End Greg Olsen joined the show to discuss his career, his Man of the Year candidacy, and what it’s like trying to translate Cam Newton’s Instagram captions. While Olsen has been a staple in the league for over a decade, he isn't quite ready to hang up the cleats just yet, even as he starts to eye a potential future in the broadcast booth.

I can play up to five more years in the NFL

How many more years are you going to play in the NFL? I would say anywhere between one and five... 15? Yeah, I could do 15 [seasons total].

Olsen played three more seasons (2018, 2019 with Carolina, 2020 with Seattle), retiring in January 2021 after 14 seasons. He was very close to his '15 season' goal.

The conversation turned to Olsen’s college days at Miami, where he defended the U’s relevance against Big Cat’s Wisconsin bias. Olsen didn't hold back on the Badgers' lack of national buzz, regardless of their win-loss record.

Wisconsin football will never be relevant no matter how many games they win

Wisconsin could win 400 games in a row. Miami goes on a four-game win streak. [Miami is more relevant]. That's why it's a joke. No one cares about Wisconsin. People have nostalgic bullshit [for Miami].

This is a subjective take on 'relevance' and 'coolness' in college football culture.

We also got a peek into Olsen's post-football aspirations. While he seems like a natural for TV, don't expect to see him wearing a headset on the sidelines on Friday nights.

There is a 0% chance I ever get into coaching

I hope you don't think you're going to get into coaching with that attitude [not drinking coffee]. There'll be 0% chance I get into coaching.

Since retiring, Olsen immediately became a top-tier color analyst for FOX and has not taken a coaching job.

Around the League and Riley Tweets

Before letting everyone go, the guys touched on the mounting tension in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers seems to be looking at the end of the Brett Favre era and realizing that loyalty in the NFL is a one-way street.

Aaron Rodgers realizes he could be pushed out of Green Bay just like Brett Favre

Aaron Rodgers... said that he was shocked that the Packers fired his quarterback coach. And he also said... 'I think you have to be humble enough to realize if it could happen to Brett [Favre], it can happen to you. It's a business.'

Rodgers was eventually traded to the Jets in 2023, following a very similar path to Favre (including a successor, Jordan Love, being drafted).

Finally, we checked in on Dan Snyder, who continues to be the undisputed king of petty front-office maneuvers. PFT Commenter broke down why the Kirk Cousins franchise tag saga is the ultimate Snyder move.

Dan Snyder is only using the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins because he wants to maintain control over a situation where he has none

Dan Snyder... has decided he's going to franchise tag Kirk Cousins after trading for older Kirk Cousins [Alex Smith]... I think it's just Snyder wanting to have control over a situation where he has no control.

This is a subjective analysis of Snyder's motivations, though widely supported by reporting on his tenure.

It was a legendary end to a wild season, and now we just have to figure out what to do with our lives until September.

Malcolm Butler was benched because of a gentleman's agreement trade between Bill Belichick and Sean Payton

Nobody knows why [Malcolm Butler was benched]... I actually think it's something else entirely. I think it's part of a gentleman's agreement between [Bill] Belichick and Sean Payton just to keep him healthy for the trade that is yet to be finalized. But it's definitely coming.

Malcolm Butler was not traded to the Saints; he signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in the following offseason.

Rob Gronkowski is seriously considering retirement

Gronk definitively would not say that he's coming back. Like he, you can tell he's thinking about it. He's thinking about retiring.

Gronk played in 2018 but then retired in March 2019 (before later returning in 2020 with Tampa Bay).

Rob Gronkowski could make more money just being 'Gronk' than playing football and risking more injuries

Gronk actually is one of those guys who I actually think he could make more money just being Gronk than playing football and getting his brain bashed in. He's just going to put 69 on everything and make millions of dollars selling apparel.

Gronk has successfully transitioned into a massive media and brand personality, earning significant income outside of football contracts.

The Eagles will be really good for at least the next two or three years

When you look at who the Eagles have signed for the next two to three years, that team is going to be really, really good. I think until like 2020, they've got all their studs signed.

The Eagles made the playoffs the following two seasons but regressed significantly, going 4-11-1 in 2020 and firing Doug Pederson, meaning they weren't 'really, really good' for the full duration.

Super Bowl commercials are officially overrated

Super Bowl commercials are now, I'm going to throw it in there, overrated. I didn't laugh at a single commercial this year... All the commercials these days are just giant corporations just jerking off talking about the good thing they did.

This is a subjective opinion on the quality of advertising, but a widely shared one in sports media circles.

Miami football won't have a quarterback who can hit a guy next year

Do you have a quarterback coming up next year that's going to be able to hit a guy? Probably not. I think our talent just caught up to us.

The 2018 Hurricanes struggled significantly with Malik Rosier and N'Kosi Perry at QB, finishing 7-6 with poor offensive production.

The media focus on the dangers of concussions and football injuries is fair

I think [the media focus on concussion protocol] is fair. I mean, I think no person in their right mind wants to see guys get their brains scrambled and injured... You can take strides to improve the safety... [but] you'll never take injury out of football. That's just the reality of the game.

This is a subjective take on media fairness and the nature of the sport.
