Eagles Super Bowl 52 Recap and Greg Olsen on Cam Newton’s Hieroglyphics
The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions, and the world as we know it has officially shifted. Big Cat and PFT Commenter sat down to process a game that featured zero defense, a backup quarterback catching a touchdown, and the greatest dynasty in NFL history getting clipped by a guy nicknamed Big Dick Nick. While the Patriots lost, Big Cat pointed out that they at least keep things interesting for the viewers.
The Patriots play the best Super Bowls and their games are always entertaining
The Patriots play the best Super Bowls. If you look at their eight Super Bowls that they've played in, they have always been entertaining, and that one was maybe one of the most entertaining.
The game really turned on Doug Pederson’s willingness to stay aggressive when most coaches would have turtled. Big Cat noted that Pederson succeeded where other AFC teams failed by never letting his foot off the gas.
Doug Pederson beat the Patriots by taking the huge risks that the Jaguars refused to take
Doug Pederson did what the Jaguars refused to do in the AFC Championship game. He knew that to beat the Patriots, you have to take one or two huge risks, and that's the only way you can do it. And he did it with the fourth down call where Nick Foles caught the touchdown.
The Malcolm Butler Mystery and Nick Foles' Future
Of course, the biggest story outside of the actual score was the benching of Malcolm Butler. PFT Commenter had a very specific theory regarding a certain NFC South coach and a gentleman’s agreement, while Big Cat leaned more toward the idea that Bill Belichick is simply a psychic who saw a bad performance coming.
Bill Belichick has the powers to envision if a player will be terrible in a game before it happens
Belichick has been so good for so long that I actually do think he has the powers to envision, yeah, Malcolm Butler cannot play in this game because he's going to be terrible. That's the only thing I could think of [for the benching].
On the other side of the ball, Nick Foles went from a guy people were worried about to a guy who is about to get paid like a franchise starter. Big Cat is already eyeing a specific destination in the AFC North for the Super Bowl MVP.
Nick Foles will get 'a lot of money' and Cleveland will try to sign him
How much money would you pay Nick Foles next year? He's going to get a lot of money. Cleveland... Cleveland comes knocking for Nick Foles. Nick Foles would be the perfect addition to that [quarterback jersey], you have to admit.
PFT Commenter also pointed out that this loss might be the start of a trend for Tom Brady, specifically when he faces quarterbacks who look like they might struggle with basic allergies.
Tom Brady can't beat 'ugly' or 'mouth-breathing' quarterbacks like Eli Manning and Nick Foles
What the game did prove to us was our theory that Tom Brady sucks against ugly quarterbacks and mouth-breathing quarterbacks... You got two against Eli [Manning], you got one against Nick Foles. It's like an ugly duckling, beautiful swan situation where you underestimate your competition if you're that much more attractive than they are.
Greg Olsen on the U and Life After Football
Pro Bowl Tight End Greg Olsen joined the show to discuss his career, his Man of the Year candidacy, and what it’s like trying to translate Cam Newton’s Instagram captions. While Olsen has been a staple in the league for over a decade, he isn't quite ready to hang up the cleats just yet, even as he starts to eye a potential future in the broadcast booth.
I can play up to five more years in the NFL
How many more years are you going to play in the NFL? I would say anywhere between one and five... 15? Yeah, I could do 15 [seasons total].
The conversation turned to Olsen’s college days at Miami, where he defended the U’s relevance against Big Cat’s Wisconsin bias. Olsen didn't hold back on the Badgers' lack of national buzz, regardless of their win-loss record.
Wisconsin football will never be relevant no matter how many games they win
Wisconsin could win 400 games in a row. Miami goes on a four-game win streak. [Miami is more relevant]. That's why it's a joke. No one cares about Wisconsin. People have nostalgic bullshit [for Miami].
We also got a peek into Olsen's post-football aspirations. While he seems like a natural for TV, don't expect to see him wearing a headset on the sidelines on Friday nights.
There is a 0% chance I ever get into coaching
I hope you don't think you're going to get into coaching with that attitude [not drinking coffee]. There'll be 0% chance I get into coaching.
Around the League and Riley Tweets
Before letting everyone go, the guys touched on the mounting tension in Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers seems to be looking at the end of the Brett Favre era and realizing that loyalty in the NFL is a one-way street.
Aaron Rodgers realizes he could be pushed out of Green Bay just like Brett Favre
Aaron Rodgers... said that he was shocked that the Packers fired his quarterback coach. And he also said... 'I think you have to be humble enough to realize if it could happen to Brett [Favre], it can happen to you. It's a business.'
Finally, we checked in on Dan Snyder, who continues to be the undisputed king of petty front-office maneuvers. PFT Commenter broke down why the Kirk Cousins franchise tag saga is the ultimate Snyder move.
Dan Snyder is only using the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins because he wants to maintain control over a situation where he has none
Dan Snyder... has decided he's going to franchise tag Kirk Cousins after trading for older Kirk Cousins [Alex Smith]... I think it's just Snyder wanting to have control over a situation where he has no control.
It was a legendary end to a wild season, and now we just have to figure out what to do with our lives until September.
