Tom Brady Is Gone + Dr. Anthony Fauci Talking Coronavirus

Wednesday, March 18, 202016 takes

Tom Brady has left the New England Patriots and is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Hank learns about loss and we speculate on who will replace TB12 for the Pats ( - ). NFL QB roulette has begun, and the Bears will screw it all up somehow ( - ). Hot Seat Cool Throne ( - ) The Director for the National Institue of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Dr. Anthony Fauci joins us to discuss the novel corona virus and what we can do to help stop its spread, what to expect in terms of a future vaccine, and as the federal response to the virus ( - ). We plead with Darren Rovell to seek help, and wrap things up with guys on chicks

Dr. Anthony Fauci and the End of the Tom Brady Era

The world is officially upside down. Not only are we all confined to our couches, but Tom Brady is officially a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Hank woke up to the news like a child being told Santa Claus isn't real, though he’s trying to keep a brave face by leaning into the nostalgia of the last two decades.

Tom Brady leaving the Patriots is heartbreaking but I am mostly reminiscing about the championships

It was heartbreaking but it was more of like I kind of agree with reminisced. I was reminiscing More than I was crying in my Cheerios. . . You can never take away like the six championships.

Subjective emotional state of a fan.

Big Cat pointed out that this is the ultimate test of the "system vs. player" debate. While the breakup feels jarring, it fits the classic Bill Belichick blueprint of getting out from under a contract before the cliff arrives.

Bill Belichick prefers to part with players a year too early rather than a year too late

I think Belichick has proven throughout the years that he will always walk away from a guy a year too early than a year too late. And in a probably was a situation where he's like, I'm not going to pay a 42 year old quarterback 30 million dollars a year for multiple years.

Belichick famously traded/cut players like Richard Seymour and Lawyer Milloy early. Letting Brady walk fits this established pattern.

While the Patriots figure out a life with Jarrett Stidham or a veteran placeholder, Big Cat is already looking toward a Hollywood ending for the GOAT. He’s envisioning a scenario where Brady doesn't just transition to Florida life but actually hosts the Super Bowl in his new home.

Tom Brady will lead the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl in their own stadium in his first season

How about this Hank: Tom Brady makes a Super Bowl next year with the Buccaneers in their stadium in Tampa. They play against the Patriots—who are you rooting for?

The Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV in February 2021 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

As the rest of the league plays musical chairs with quarterbacks, the Chargers are being viewed as the biggest losers for failing to secure Brady. Big Cat thinks they missed a golden opportunity to exert some leverage over the league office.

The Chargers should have offered Tom Brady team equity to spite the NFL owners for blocking their Vegas bid

The Los Angeles Chargers... could have pulled an all-time fuck you move to the owners. . . If the Chargers had offered Brady equity in the football team after his retirement—cause I don't think that they can give it to him as he's playing—every owner in the NFL would've been so pissed off about that and it would have been the perfect opportunity for some real vengeance.

This is a subjective strategy proposal that was never attempted.

Meanwhile, the Bears are doing exactly what they always do: making everyone nervous while simultaneously destroying the confidence of Mitchell Trubisky.

The Chicago Bears will pursue every available quarterback and somehow end up with none of them

The Bears are going to be in on every single quarter back out there and somehow get none of them and completely demolish what little is left of Mitchell Trubisky's confidence to the point where what you'll be gone now.

They actually did get a QB (Nick Foles), but Trubisky's confidence and tenure were indeed demolished.

Outside of the quarterback drama, Bill O'Brien has the entire football world scratching their heads after trading DeAndre Hopkins for what amounts to a bag of chips and a second-round pick. PFT has a working theory that O'Brien might actually be working from the inside to help his former boss in New England.

Bill O'Brien is a sleeper agent for Bill Belichick designed to implode AFC teams

I remain convinced this day that Bill O'Brien is a sleeper agent for Bill Belichick as are all of his former assistant coaches that go out across the country take jobs usually in the AFC implode teams and then come back to ensure the Patriots and get to the Super Bowl faster.

Satirical claim that cannot be proven true or false, but O'Brien's tenure in Houston did end in disaster.

In a shift from the usual sports talk, Dr. Anthony Fauci joined the show to give some much-needed clarity on the COVID-19 pandemic. He didn't sugarcoat the situation, emphasizing that while younger listeners might feel fine, they have a massive responsibility to the people around them.

Young people are not invulnerable to COVID-19 and must help protect the elderly

No one's invulnerable. But even if you are doing very well, you have to be a very important part of our national effort to contain the outbreak but importantly to protect the young individuals. . . This isn't something that can be successful without you.

Medical consensus confirmed that while risk of death was higher for the elderly, young people could still get sick and spread the virus.

Dr. Fauci broke down the science of why we’re all staying inside, explaining the timeline for a potential vaccine and why social distancing isn't just an overreaction. He also gave some very practical advice for the PMT listeners who might be feeling under the weather.

Tylenol is the safest medication to take for reducing a fever caused by the virus

The safest thing to get your fever down is Tylenol. . . if you want to take Tylenol you really want to take it no more than every six hours.

Acetaminophen (Tylenol) remains the standard recommendation for fever reduction.

While the news cycle is moving at 100 miles per hour, Dr. Fauci offered a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel regarding how long these extreme measures might need to last if everyone actually follows the rules.

The virus could potentially resolve within 8 to 10 weeks if mitigation is successful

In this case for China, it was somewhere between 8 and 10 weeks. That doesn't mean that we're going to have to be doing this for that long period of time... Hopefully if we really carefully and successfully implement these mitigation strategies... we may be able to cut that time down.

The mitigation did not end the pandemic in 10 weeks; it lasted through 2022 in varying degrees of severity.

Before letting him go, Big Cat and PFT made sure to get a hard number on social gatherings, because as we know, some people think a "small group" includes thirty people and a keg.

Gatherings should be limited to 10 or fewer people to stay safe during the pandemic

10 is the safer number. I would go with 10. . . don't deliberately go to a place with more than 10 people.

This matched the CDC and federal guidelines issued during that week in March 2020.

Wash your hands for twenty seconds and stay away from the pile.

Philip Rivers on the Colts will finish between 7-9 and 9-7

The Colts will be exactly what they were. They will beat a few teams they shouldn't be... and they'll finish the season somewhere between seven and nine with if I was a quarterback in the AFC South, I'd be very happy with the signing.

The Colts finished 11-5 and made the playoffs, outperforming Big Cat's prediction.

Baker Mayfield will have a bounce-back year with the Browns following the additions of Austin Hooper and Jack Conklin

The biggest winner of yesterday in my opinion is actually Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield getting Austin Hooper and Jack Conklin. I think we're going to have a bounce-back year for Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield led the Browns to an 11-5 record and their first playoff win in decades in the 2020 season.

The Cowboys significantly overpaid for Amari Cooper because of the Redskins' fake interest

The Redskins—our words—drove the price up on Amari Cooper... making the Dallas Cowboys overpay for him on a five-year hundred million dollar contract. . . That is the genius of Dan Snyder right there is making other very rich dumb people spend more of their rich dumb money.

The contract was widely criticized at the time as an overpay, though Cooper remained productive.

The Buffalo Bills are now the favorites in the AFC East with Brady gone

Another bonus cool throne is the Buffalo Bills because now that Tom Brady's out the division, I think you have to say that the bills are hills country... they might be favored to win.

The Bills won the AFC East in 2020 and several subsequent years, ending the Patriots' dominance.

Recovering from the virus likely provides immunity for a prolonged period

For the most part once you're infected with a particular virus the next time you get exposed if you've recovered from that virus you're protected. . . You can have herd immunity, which means the virus doesn't have a lot of places to go because most of the people in the population are protected.

Natural immunity was confirmed to exist, though its efficacy waned over time and with new variants.

Developing a safe vaccine will take at least a year to a year and a half

Safety is paramount. . . We really are on a very very fast track to get a vaccine. But even on the fastest track, it's going to take a year to a year and a half.

The vaccines arrived faster than his 'fastest track' prediction (approx 9 months vs 12-18).
