Julian Edelman on Super Bowl Contenders and Big Cat’s War with the Cardinals
We’ve got a massive show to get you through the holiday gap since there's no Friday episode. Our good friend Julian Edelman joined us in the studio to watch the bizarre Tuesday night slate. Between the Washington Football Team's struggle and the Rams-Seahawks officiating disaster, there was plenty to break down. Julian Edelman brought the perspective of a guy who actually knows how to handle a wet ball, which was more than we could say for some of the quarterbacks on the field.
Julian Edelman Watches the World Burn
Watching the games with Julian Edelman is always a trip because he sees the stuff the rest of us miss. While PFT and Big Cat were focused on the chaos, Julian Edelman was watching Jalen Hurts and wondering about the long-term viability of that offense in Philadelphia. He wasn't exactly sold on the "run first, think later" approach being a sustainable model for a franchise quarterback.
Jalen Hurts is not a long-term solution at quarterback for the Eagles
[Jalen Hurts] is gonna make some really good plays with his legs... and he shows he's shown us that he does that consistently. But I mean, I just don't think that's like a long lasting plan.
Despite the loss, Julian Edelman actually had some flowers for the Washington Football Team. He's a big Ron Rivera guy and thinks the culture change in D.C. is starting to actually take root, regardless of the revolving door at quarterback.
The future of the Washington Football Team is on an upward trajectory under Ron Rivera
The future of the organization is looking at an upward trajectory for Washington. I believe in Ron Rivera. I mean, he did it, he had the Carolina Panthers, you know, a pretty good football team for a long time.
We also got into a fascinating breakdown of how the position has changed. Julian Edelman pointed out that rookie wideouts are entering the league more polished than ever, which explains why we’re seeing guys like Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase explode immediately.
Wide receivers are transitioning from college to the NFL at a higher rate than ever before
I think that receivers are actually transitioning at a higher rate in these last five, six years than they have ever before... a lot of these guys, there's so much more information now for younger players on how to train, what kind of drills to train.
Naturally, PFT had a theory about why DK Metcalf wasn't getting the ball in Seattle, and it had everything to do with off-field foursomes and Russell Wilson’s moral compass.
Russell Wilson is punishing DK Metcalf for his personal life off the field
[DK Metcalf] got his shit aired out by some thought who was like, oh, DK, didn't make me sign an NDA. So I'm going to put this all over Snapchat and tell the world that he was asking me for a foursome. And now that news came out now, Russell doesn't pass it... He's punishing DK for being a red blooded American male.
The State of the League
When we looked at the actual contenders, Julian Edelman isn't just handing the trophy to the favorites. He’s noticed some cracks in the armor of the elite teams, specifically pointing out that the Chiefs' offense isn't quite the juggernaut it used to be, even if they are winning games.
Patrick Mahomes is missing throws that he hasn't missed in a very long time
The [Chiefs] are getting hot at the right time when their defense is playing well. That's scary. Their offense still isn't there. They're still missing little fundamental things. And I've seen Patrick Mahomes miss some throws you haven't seen him miss in a very long time.
He’s also high on a couple of sleeper teams that most of the media is ignoring. He loves the way the Colts play opportunistic football and thinks the 49ers are the team nobody wants to see in January because they simply out-physical people in the trenches.
The 49ers are Super Bowl contenders because Jimmy Garoppolo is a winner and their defense is flying
I'm going with the Niners. I like the way the Niners play. [Jimmy Garoppolo]'s been there, man. And everyone wants to hate on him... The guy who wins football games. You get it to Kittle, if Kittle stays healthy, Deebo Samuel stays healthy... if you watch that defense man, they're playing real well. They're flying right now.
Hot Seat, Cool Throne and the Cardinals War
Big Cat is officially on a war footing with the Arizona Cardinals' social media team. After they refused to tweet the final score of their embarrassing loss to the Lions, Big Cat has made it his life’s mission to ratio them into oblivion. It's a battle for the soul of the internet and the city of Detroit.
The Arizona Cardinals are officially cursed for failing to tweet the final score of their losses
The Arizona Cardinals just did not tweet the final score after they lost the lions... I'm demanding they treat the final score. I don't think they ever will... It's going to be a dangerous all out battle... as far as I'm concerned, the lions have one. An official.
On the Cool Throne, PFT is celebrating the return of the widest denim known to man. If the Wall Street Journal says it's back, who are we to argue with the youths?
JNCO jeans are officially back in style
My cool throne is JNCOs. Yeah. And JNCOs are also back... there was a, a trend piece in the Wall Street Journal, you know, something's real cool when it's written about in the Wall Street Journal.
Weekend Preview and the Board
Since we’re off Friday, we hammered out the picks for the weekend early. Big Cat isn't buying the "everyone sucks" narrative that's floating around NFL circles right now. He thinks the cream is rising to the top and we have a solid group of elite teams.
There are six or seven definitively good teams in the NFL right now
I like how everyone's like there's parity. There's no one [good]—I totally disagree. There are like probably six or seven teams that are definitively good. It's the Cowboys, the Bucs, the Packers, the Chiefs, the Patriots, and then throw in the Colts... maybe even the Rams.
In terms of specific bets, Big Cat is putting his money where his mouth is regarding his feud with the desert. He’s backing the Colts this weekend for the sole purpose of forcing the Cardinals into another awkward post-game silence.
I am betting on the Colts to beat the Cardinals out of spite for the Cardinals' Twitter account
I'm going with the Colts, pick them right now... I'll take them as minus a half... the Cardinals need to lose this game and they have to be forced to tweet about it. Yes. Otherwise I like, whatever, I'll stick with it. I think it's been so long that they're cursed no matter what.
Meanwhile, PFT is all-in on the Tyler Huntley experience in Baltimore. He’s convinced the Ravens might actually be a more dangerous out right now with Huntley running the show than they are with a banged-up Lamar Jackson.
The Baltimore Ravens have a better chance of winning with Tyler Huntley than Lamar Jackson
I feel like the Ravens have a better chance of beating the Bengals with Huntley than they do with Lamar. And not because Lamar is a worse player overall. But I think that whatever offense they're running with Huntley rocks, it's clicking for some reason right now.
Make sure to tip your delivery drivers and avoid any fourth-quarter parlays involving teams that don't tweet their scores.
