Keegan Bradley on Travelers Win and MJ, Pat Freiermuth on Steelers 2023
The boys are wrapping up a long week at Pinehurst, and Big Cat is already taking the victory lap for his unrecorded hole-in-one. While the golf trip has been exhausting, the real sports world gave us a perfect game from Domingo German. PFT was quick to point out the Yankee lore involved with perfect games, while Jake was more concerned with German’s off-field standing. Beyond the mound, the conversation shifted to Shohei Ohtani’s absurd dominance, which led PFT to stake his claim on the Angels star.
Shohei Ohtani is the best baseball player to ever live
I think we can say Ohtani's the best baseball player to ever live.
Before getting into the guests, the group revisited their recent content slate, including the MLB fantasy draft that was recorded during a particularly boozy celebration for Hank's birthday. PFT isn't exactly bullish on how that one will be received by the AWLs.
The MLB Fantasy Draft we recorded is the worst thing we've ever done
I think it's without a doubt the worst thing that we've ever done. Yeah. It's just, it's just guys saying names and then most of the names have already been said before.
Mount Rushmore of Heavy Machinery
This was a Mount Rushmore designed for the soul of Billy Football. Big Cat and PFT led things off with the Tank, a classic military powerhouse, but Billy took the concept of scale to an entirely different level with his first pick.
The Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier is the ultimate piece of heavy machinery
Nuclear powered aircraft carrier... they can just go forever because they got a nuclear reactor on board... China doesn't have an actual [one]... It's why we're the GOAT.
Other highlights included the car crusher, which Hank and Max defended for its pure therapeutic value, and the crane, which sparked a ten-minute debate on how cranes are actually built. Billy tried to explain that smaller cranes build bigger cranes, but the logic eventually collapsed under the weight of the guys asking where the very first crane came from. It was a classic PMT rabbit hole that ended with PFT taking a jackhammer in the late rounds just to spite the concept of the list.
Keegan Bradley: Travelers Champ and MJ’s Golf Obsession
Keegan Bradley joined the show fresh off an emotional win at the Travelers Championship. He opened up about the mental grind of the final round and how he survived a fan chirping him about choking on the 17th tee. Keegan also got real about the belly putter ban, which he feels derailed a significant portion of his prime.
The USGA's ban on the belly putter was a major mistake that cost me money and potential Ryder Cup appearances
I would think a lot of times of how much money this [belly putter ban] cost me or how many Ryder Cups maybe this cost me or majors or whatever... it was a tough time but I now when I look back, it's great cuz I shoved it, you know, screw them and now I feel better than ever.
Naturally, the conversation turned to his friendship with Michael Jordan. Keegan painted a picture of a guy who simply does not have a biological off-switch when it comes to competition.
Michael Jordan is more obsessed with golf than any other human being I've ever met
I've never met anybody that loves golf more than [Michael Jordan]. That's awesome. And like, after these days... he'll do this for three weeks on end. Like he's just, his, everything about him is wired different. Next day I'm like getting up. Meanwhile, he's 60 years old... he's not the same human being I am.
Keegan also discussed his desire to return to the Ryder Cup, explaining that the atmosphere is unlike anything else in golf. He’s all for bringing that level of intensity and clear division to the sport more often.
Golf should embrace more Ryder Cup-style atmospheres with partisan crowds and clear villains
I think golf needs to go more in that direction [Ryder Cup atmosphere]. I think it's great. Like even the competition between LIV guys and tour guys. I think it's great. Yeah. It's awesome.
Pat Freiermuth: The Standard and Big Ben
Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth dropped by to talk about the transition from the Big Ben era to Kenny Pickett. He shared a great story about Ben calling him the day after he was drafted while Pat was still nursing a massive hangover. Even with Ben retired, Pat still believes the future Hall of Famer has plenty left in the tank.
Big Ben Roethlisberger could still play in the NFL right now
Big Ben... He definitely could. He definitely could [still play]. Yeah. Yeah. He definitely could. Yeah.
As for the current quarterback, Pat is firmly in the camp that hand size is a non-issue and that the "two gloves" look is actually a weapon for Kenny Pickett.
Kenny Pickett's hands are the perfect size to play in Pittsburgh
I think his hands are perfect. Yeah, I think his hands are perfect. They're nice hands.
When it came time for season predictions, Pat didn't hold back. He’s projecting a nearly flawless campaign for the 2023 Steelers, with a very specific reason for why they might drop one game at the end.
I guarantee the Steelers will go 16-1 this season
Guarantee it 16 and oh... 16 and 1. [Loss in week 17] Because you pull all your starters cuz you have the number one seed locked up. Exactly.
Fyre Fest of the Week
Hank’s Fyre Fest involved his father calling him specifically to tell him how much he hated Hank’s Taco Bell Mount Rushmore picks. PFT, meanwhile, is dealing with a horticultural crisis after accidentally shipping a six-foot-tall live tree to his old apartment in New York. His plan to have Billy rescue it and ship it to Chicago sounds like the start of a very bad buddy comedy. PFT ended the segment by reminding everyone that despite the occasional Taco Bell miss, he remains the king of the Mount Rushmore segment.
I am definitively the best Mount Rushmore drafter in the history of the show
I think I'm easily, you know, I'm a humble guy, but I'm pretty far and away the best Mount Rushmore drafter on this show over the years.
