Max Homa on The Masters, Kansas Wins the Title, and Elite Eight Parades
We are back in the studio after a bender of a weekend in New Orleans that saw Kansas cut down the nets. The Jayhawks pulled off a historic 16-point comeback against a battered North Carolina squad, and Big Cat thinks the victory is a sign of the times for the NCAA.
Most sports fans no longer care about college athletes getting paid or schools facing NCAA violations
It is the perfect champion for this day and age where the rules have changed. I'd say most people don't give a fuck about college players getting paid whatsoever. And the NCAA has just been dragging their feet... they're giving a trophy to a school that is also facing violations.
PFT noted that while this wasn't the most talented Kansas roster in history, it felt like a cosmic makeup call for the 2020 team that never got their chance to dance.
Kansas winning the 2022 national title is justice for their 2020 team having the tournament cancelled
It's justice though for Kansas for 2020, because going into that tournament... we I think we had Kansas number one overall seed. I think we picked them to win the championship in 2020 and the fake bracket. It's good to see Kansas get this bag.
The conversation shifted to legacies, specifically Bill Self now entering the upper echelon of active coaches. Big Cat argued that Self has now cemented himself as a top-two lock behind only Rick Pitino, especially considering he’s reached the Elite Eight in over half of his tournament appearances.
Bill Self has the second-best active coaching resume behind Rick Pitino
Does Bill Self now, out of all the active coaches, have the second-best resume only to Rick Pitino? This second one for Bill Self puts him in rarefied air and it cements everything that he's done at Kansas. He has more wins than Jay Wright. He has gone to the tournament 23 straight years, and 12 out of those 23 he's gotten to at least the Elite Eight.
Speaking of legacies, the guys couldn't help but twist the knife one last time on Coach K. While Kansas celebrated, Duke's season ended with a loss to their biggest rival in the Final Four, a stain that PFT believes won't ever wash out.
Coach K's legacy is forever stained by losing his final home game and final tournament game to North Carolina
Coach K's legacy is also forever stained. If Bill Self lost two important games to end his season this year, we would put that as a big dock. He would not be in the Rick Pitino [tier]. Pitino remains unstained.
The Billy Spreadsheet Saga
Billy Football somehow managed to turn the $2,000 cash the guys gave him into a $50 profit using a series of "arbitrage" and "hedging" techniques that mostly just involved him staring at Excel for forty hours. He brought the $2,050 back to the studio in a brick of shrink-wrapped singles, claiming he told the bank teller he was filming a music video. Jake also recapped his first Final Four from press row, though he admitted he’s hitting about a 47% success rate on his "One Shiny Marshman" picks, losing out to Billy's 50.5% growth.
Hot Seat/Cool Throne
Hot Seat belongs to the nice guy image of Andy Dalton. The Red Rifle signed with the Saints, which directly led to the release of friend of the program Blake Bortles. Big Cat isn't taking it well.
Andy Dalton is a dickhead for signing with the Saints and causing Blake Bortles to be cut
My hot seat is Andy Dalton being a nice guy because he signed with the Saints and Blake Bortles then asked to be cut because there was not enough room for Blake Bortles. So I'm starting to rethink this whole Andy Dalton thing... Andy Dalton, what the fuck, dude? Kind of a dickhead move.
On the Cool Throne, Billy is riding high on St. Peter's. He attended their Elite Eight parade in Jersey City and thinks the Peacocks might be the next mid-major to actually stick around on the national stage.
St. Peter's has a chance to become a small-school powerhouse like Gonzaga
I actually think [St. Peter's] have a chance to become like one of these small school powerhouses that ends up like a Gonzaga. Seriously, like they'll make runs with... now that the school has had such an increase in enrollment and increase [in funding].
Max Homa Prepares for Augusta
Our good friend Max Homa joined the show to preview the Masters, and he isn't playing it safe this year. After missing the cut in his previous trips to Augusta, Max is putting it all on the line.
I am 100% guaranteed to make the cut at the 2022 Masters
The only thing that's made me nervous is for the first time in my life, I've kind of laid my nuts on the table and said I'm going to do something... I texted you that I was a 100% making this.
Max talked about the nerves of playing with Tiger Woods, his disdain for escape rooms compared to the raw aggression of laser tag, and his belief that he can actually contend for a Green Jacket if he can just get through Friday afternoon.
There is a path for me to win the Masters this year
There's definitely a world where I can see myself winning the Masters... I definitely need to accomplish one goal [making the cut], but I'm coming off of a made cut at my last major... so I'm streaking at the moment.
We also had to check in on Max’s Lakers, who have been a certified disaster. Big Cat questioned if the LeBron era is a total bust if you subtract the championship won in the Orlando bubble.
LeBron James' Lakers tenure has been a bust (excluding the Bubble title)
Would you say LeBron's time in LA has been a complete bust because we don't count the Mickey Mouse championship? And do you as a Lakers fan feel disgraced because you basically threw Kobe aside and started loving LeBron? They are right now out of the playoffs... it's been hard defending it.
Guys on Chicks
The episode wrapped with a heavy dose of relationship advice. One listener asked about a boyfriend who insisted on using a bracket to name their firstborn child and is now refusing to budge from the winner. Big Cat, ever the stickler for the integrity of the game, sided with the father.
If you agree to a bracket-based system for naming your child, you are legally bound to follow through with the winner
My problem with this is, if you agreed to this, you have—it's legally binding. You shouldn't have done this... naming our child off a completely random tournament, but you agreed to it. And now guess what? Your only recourse here is have another kid and then you get to name that kid.
Another listener complained about her boyfriend ordering the most expensive item on the menu when she offered to treat him to dinner. The guys agreed it’s a total rookie move that violates the unspoken rules of social dining.
You should never order the most expensive steak on the menu when someone else is treating you to dinner
If you go out to dinner... my rule is you go one level beneath what her dad would [order]... Third or fourth most expensive steak is where you have to [be]. There's just always that feel. You have to judge who you're with. If you're out with someone who maybe can't afford a super expensive steak, just don't be that guy.
If Max Homa doesn't make the cut this weekend, look for him at a North Carolina laser tag facility bullying seven-year-olds.
