Wednesday, May 10, 202324 takes

The Sixers killed the Celtics in Boston and Hank is being a big baby about everything. We talk about the game and Hank freezes out PFT (-). Lakers beat the Warriors and the dark thoughts about a title run are entering everyone's head (-). Julius Randle sucks and we play choose your own adventure with Nuggets/Suns (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne (-). Paul Bissonnette joins the show to talk about NHL Playoffs, TNT, Conor Bedard and more (-). We finish with listener FAQ's and Billy talks about Chicago plus Lottery ball (-).

Paul Bissonnette on NHL Playoffs, Sixers Steamroll Celtics, and the End of an Era for Billy

The vibes in the studio were at an all-time high for Max and a subterranean low for Hank after the Sixers dismantled the Celtics in Boston. Hank was in full turtle mode, icing out PFT and refusing to wear his headphones for half the show while Big Cat questioned if the Celtics even like each other anymore.

The Celtics players don't like each other

It feels like a team that they don't like each other. The way they play is like something's off and it's not, they are so talented And then you watch that and you're like, what is that?

This is a subjective observation based on chemistry and on-court body language.

Hank tried to spin it as a positive, pointing out that the series isn't over, but the guys weren't buying the sudden optimism from the resident Boston fan. The conversation turned toward the coaching change from Ime Udoka to Joe Mazzulla and why this team looks so different from the one that made the Finals a year ago.

The Celtics would be playing differently if Ime Udoka was still the coach

It just seemed like, seems like that's not happening this year. And you have, it's having two first year coaches in a row sucks. I do think Ime Udoka would, would they, this team would be playing different cuz then it does feel like their defensive ability and intensity is different and Ime Udoka got the most outta that.

This is a hypothetical 'what if' scenario that cannot be definitively proven.

Across the bracket, the Lakers are officially terrifying the league after Lonnie Walker IV’s fourth-quarter explosion against the Warriors. Big Cat is starting to accept the grim reality that another LeBron title might be imminent, even if PFT is attributing the victory to some supernatural help from the Black Mamba.

Kobe Bryant's spirit won Game 4 for the Lakers, not Lonnie Walker IV

I think we can all agree that Kobe Bryant actually won that game for the Lakers, not Lonnie Walker. RG3 said Lonnie Walker's performance in the fourth quarter was out of this world. We know it was you Bean.

This is a satirical claim about a ghost influencing a basketball game.

The Lakers might win the NBA title

I think the Lakers might win the NBA title PFT. I'm officially on scared that LeBron might win another title watch.

The Lakers did not win the title; they were swept by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals.

Paul Bissonnette joined the show fresh off a sugar high and a two-hour sit-down with Charles Barkley. Biz broke down why the hockey world is losing its mind over the Blackhawks winning the draft lottery. He explained how Connor Bedard’s legendary shot actually started with a broken hand and why Chicago needs to immediately go out and find some enforcers to keep the kid safe.

Connor Bedard has the best shot the NHL has ever seen

His shot is like the best they've ever seen. Like it's, it's, it's like insane how he's able, what he's able to do and how he's able to quickly elevate the puck and he's just, he has a lethal shot. So, so, so it's it's cool. He's a phenom.

While 'best ever' is subjective, Bedard's rookie season showed an elite shot that immediately translated to the NHL level.

The Black Hawks should sign Ryan Reaves to protect Connor Bedard

If the team's not that great, he's gonna get to play a little bit. If anyone goes, if anyone breathes on him, [Ryan Reaves] goes up and just... I would sign the two toughest guys... Just put a goon line on the fourth line. And nobody's gonna go near him.

The Blackhawks did not sign Reaves (who went to the Leafs), but they did bring in veterans like Nick Foligno for leadership and toughness.

Biz also gave his assessment of the remaining playoff field, including a dark horse pick in the East and his belief that the Kraken aren't just a fun story anymore.

The Seattle Kraken are for real and could win the Stanley Cup

No, they're for real. They just, so I, I didn't trust them against the Champs either. But Seattle is just such a disciplined team. They have all these castaway type players. I think Seattle could win it all.

The Kraken lost in Game 7 of the second round to the Dallas Stars, so they did not win it all.

The Devils are a dark horse to win the Stanley Cup if they can outrun the Hurricanes

I would have my dark horse right now being down two one to Carolina... I think New Jersey, I still see something in New Jersey. I might be dead wrong, but that's probably the dark horse and best odds right now.

The Devils lost to the Hurricanes in 5 games.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne featured the usual chaos, including Bob Huggins' terrible radio appearance and Jake's burgeoning career as a professional golf broadcaster for the Korn Ferry tour. Big Cat also officially declared himself a hockey guy for life now that the Blackhawks have their next superstar.

I am buying Blackhawks season tickets because of Connor Bedard

I watched a highlight video. There's like a 20 minute highlight video I was watching and I did buy season tickets. I hope everyone here likes to go to hockey games. Cause we're gonna go to a lot of hockey games. I got swept up. I mean he looks, I, I know there's a lot of pressure on him, but he does feel like a can't miss guy.

Big Cat did indeed purchase season tickets for the Blackhawks.

To wrap up the show, the guys got into some listener FAQs that took a serious turn. After months of speculation, Billy Football finally addressed the upcoming move to Chicago. In a heartfelt moment that saw him nearly break down, Billy read a statement explaining why he won't be joining the rest of the crew in the Midwest.

I am not moving to Chicago with the rest of the show

I will not be moving to Chicago. Kind of been in denial about it. It sucks to say there are various parts of my life that I keep private that impacted this decision. I hope you guys respect the decision. Please just remember that I am the only one who can weigh all the factors that impact my life.

This was a definitive personal announcement that came to pass.

It’s the end of an era for the pod, but at least we still have Billy until July to talk about tick-borne diseases and why he could definitely kill a moose with his bare hands.

Our backs are against the wall but we just have to win Game 6 to get home court for Game 7

Backs against the wall. This team is tough. This team has been there before. Just gotta win. And then you got a home court advantage for game seven.

The Celtics won Game 6 in Philly but lost Game 7 at home to the Sixers.

The Celtics' fans were right to boo the team in the third quarter of Game 5

You gotta use some, you know, you gotta get, get under their skin, get the boys riled up. They did go on a, a mini sort of tiny run after that, so I had no problem with it.

Subjective opinion on fan behavior and its motivational impact.

The Celtics' defensive intensity has dropped significantly under Joe Mazzulla compared to Ime Udoka

I do think Ime Udoka would, would they, this team would be playing different cuz then it does feel like their defensive ability and intensity is different and Ime Udoka got the most outta that.

The Celtics were eliminated in the ECF, and defensive lapses were a major talking point throughout the series.

Wasted years in sports are the worst feeling because you know you have the talent to win it all

It does feel like a wasted year and there's no worse feeling in sports than a wasted year. Yep. Where you know that you've got what it takes and you could win a championship and you just burn out in spectacular fashion.

Purely a subjective sentiment about sports fandom.

The Warriors will win the series if Jordan Poole stops sucking

If Jordan Poole can figure out a way to not suck, then the Warriors should win the series. But unfortunately he sucks.

Poole continued to struggle and the Warriors lost the series in six games.

Julius Randle is not a good basketball player

Julius Randle is so bad. He really is like, he's so bad. There were so many times where he was like, either he'd be like, fade away three or just like Lackadaisical Pass. After the game he said maybe the Heat just won it more, which I don't think that's gonna go over well in the New York crowd.

Randle's play in that series was widely criticized, making this a common take at the time.

The Heat are only beating the Knicks because Miami is too hot and the sun is affecting them

Greenie was saying that, that that's the reason why the Knicks are losing the series. Just because, just because of the sun. Sun is too hot in Miami and the heat, I mean they're just good.

The Heat beat the Knicks in 6 games, but not because of the sun's temperature inside an arena.

The Nuggets will beat the Suns by 12 points in Game 5

I think they're gonna win by 12. I think it's gonna get ugly late. I don't think Devin Booker can keep up the pace that he's been on. The sons have no bench and they're fucked when he is out.

The Nuggets won Game 5 by 16 points (118-102), making PFT's prediction of a 12-point blowout fairly close in spirit.

Every NFL team should claim they wanted a quarterback after the draft just in case they're good

If you're an NFL team and you can always just throw out there like, we wanted to take this guy on draft night, nobody will remember that if he ends up stinking in like three years. But in the chance that he is good, you can always point back and be like, we actually had him.

This is a strategic recommendation rather than a testable fact, though many teams do indeed do this (e.g., the Bruce Arians/Mahomes story).

Just arrest Dan Snyder. And I think that would be fine. I think that would satisfy all parties. [regarding allegations the Commanders contacted Andrew Luck].

The NHL should rig the draft lottery for major markets

If you're the NHL, you should absolutely rig the draft. Duh. This is entertainment. Yes. Listen, you're a multi-billion dollar corporation. Do you want your best players to be playing for teams that nobody cares about? Yeah. No you don't. You want them in Chicago.

Whether the draft is actually rigged is unprovable, but his stance that they *should* is a matter of opinion.

If the Maple Leafs get swept, everyone will get fired and a major player will be traded

I think if they get swept every single guy is getting gassed and maybe one of the big guys getting traded. Complete implosion. I think that if they get swept, everybody's gone.

The Leafs lost in five games (not a sweep). GM Kyle Dubas was fired/let go, but the 'Core Four' players remained on the roster through the siguiente season.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are the best duo since Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen

I say he's Pippen and Jordan, I say the best duo since Pippen and Jordan. Wow. They're gonna, I think they're gonna win win a championship.

While elite, the duo had not won a Cup at this point and were eliminated shortly after this take. They did reach the Finals in 2024.
