Wednesday, August 31, 202219 takes

Hard Knocks Episode 4 is here and we recap what probably happened (-). The preseason is officially over and cut day has come and gone (-). Hot Seat/Cool Throne including Hillary Duff's diarrhea, Bill Clinton's exchange with Dr Ruth, and talking tennis (-). Bruce Arians joins us in studio to talk about his retirement from coaching, what it's like to be the "Hand of the King" for an NFL Franchise, and his relationship with Tom Brady (-). We finish with the Mt Rushmore of living legends (-).

Bruce Arians on Brady Rumors, NFL Cut Day, and Living Legends

We are officially in the thick of the NFL preseason wrap-up, and Big Cat, PFT, and the crew are recording live from Stu Feiner’s basement. It’s a setting that feels like a smoke-filled room of old-school football guys, which is perfect because cut day has arrived. The Lions are the focus of Hard Knocks, and PFT has a very specific destination in mind for one of their standout wide receivers.

Tom Kennedy will be cut by the Lions and signed by the New England Patriots

Tom Kennedy is going to be cut and then he's going to be signed by the New England Patriots. Not only does he fit the bill for New England Patriots... Bill Belichick, he opens his eyes, he looks at Tom Kennedy, he's like, that's my next Wes Welker.

Kennedy was cut by the Lions but he was signed back to their practice squad, not the Patriots.

Speaking of guys moving around the league, Josh Johnson was cut again, continuing his legendary run as the NFL's premier nomadic backup. While it's a tough break, PFT is looking at the glass half full regarding Johnson’s travel schedule.

Josh Johnson will play for at least two more NFL teams this year

Josh Johnson got cut. He's played on 14 teams now. He'll probably play for at least two more this year. I love the fact that he's the guy that you call when you don't have another guy.

Johnson was on the Broncos and then signed with the 49ers later in the season, playing for two different teams.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne

Hot Seat/Cool Throne took us from the locker room to the breakfast buffet and eventually the tennis courts. Big Cat sparked a heated debate about the most average part of a hotel stay, specifically calling out the cereal selection at the continental breakfast.

Frosted Flakes are a perfectly average and unexciting cereal

I feel like Frosted Flakes is an okay cereal, but it's just never is anyone's like—does anyone get excited about it? They're perfectly average. Unless they're stale at the continental breakfast.

This is a subjective food preference.

In sports news, the crew marveled at the late-career resurgence of Albert Pujols. While the baseball world is celebrating the chase for 700, Big Cat is looking at the sudden power surge with a slightly skeptical eye, especially compared to other aging athletes.

Albert Pujols' late-career home run surge is suspicious and 'not normal'

Albert Pujols, 42 years old. July 4th he was hitting .189. And since then he leads the league in batting average and has like 11 homers. That's totally normal... Why does Sam Querrey not do fucking drugs before he retires? He should have done some fucking Winstrol.

While Pujols did reach 700 home runs, the implication of PED use is a matter of speculation and was never proven.

Meanwhile, PFT noticed some interesting activity in the stands at the US Open. Former President Bill Clinton was spotted getting quite friendly with sex therapist Dr. Ruth, leading to some bold speculation about what happens when the cameras aren't looking.

Bill Clinton definitely hooked up with Dr. Ruth at the US Open

Bill Clinton was at the US Open too. And he was best term for it—he was noodling with Dr. Ruth. They were getting very close... bill Clinton was getting real horny with Dr. Ruth. And I think he fucked her. I'm going to say he fucked her.

This is a satirical claim about a private encounter that cannot be verified.

Bruce Arians in Studio

The highlight of the show was recurring guest and Super Bowl champion Bruce Arians joining the crew in studio. Now serving as a "special advisor" to the Buccaneers, Arians seems to be living the dream—all of the football knowledge with none of the gameday blame. He wasted no time addressing the internet's favorite rumor that Tom Brady forced him out of the head coaching seat.

Rumors of friction with Tom Brady were completely false

It was a big one [the rumor of friction]. It's nothing could be further from the truth. We have a great relationship... Tom, he's asking more questions and I throw him in the golf cart and he's old enough and I can drive him off the field.

While media speculation persisted, Arians consistently denied it. Short of a confession, his word is the primary source.

Arians provided some incredible insight into what it’s like coaching the GOAT. Despite being 45 years old, Arians insists that Brady is actually improving physically, which is a terrifying thought for the rest of the NFC South.

Tom Brady is throwing the ball better at age 45 than he did two years ago

He's throwing better now. It's crazy... he's got great mechanics. He's one of those full body throwers. He's not using all just arm. Tom, he's an amazing human being... he's throwing the ball better and I've ever seen him throw it.

Brady did lead the league in passing yards and TDs in the prior season (2021).

The conversation turned to the other legendary quarterbacks Arians has coached, and he didn't hesitate to put Andrew Luck at the top of the list. He reminisced about Luck’s unique physicality, describing a guy who played the most important position in sports with the mentality of a middle linebacker.

Andrew Luck is the only quarterback I've ever coached who hits as hard as a linebacker after throwing an interception

He was taking a beating and again, tough as nails. I mean he's the only linebacker—he's the only quarterback that throws an interception and hits as hard as the linebacker. Yeah. Cause he's pissed off.

This is an expert evaluation based on personal coaching experience.

Mount Rushmore of Living Legends

To wrap things up, the crew stayed in Stu Feiner’s basement to draft the Mount Rushmore of Living Legends. The draft got off to a chaotic start when Hank used the first overall pick on an internet sensation over the greatest basketball player of all time.

Hasbulla is a bigger living legend than Michael Jordan

One-one is Hasbulla. He's a living legend. He walks in the room, everyone stops. You go to any country in the world and they're like—Hasbulla. He's got international [fame]. Hasbulla objectively is way bigger [than Michael Jordan].

Objectively, Michael Jordan has far greater global recognition and cultural impact than Hasbulla.

Big Cat and PFT countered with some heavy hitters, including Adam Sandler, who Big Cat praised for being the ultimate "guy's guy" who just happens to be a global movie star.

Adam Sandler is a living legend because of his 100% likability rating and his tendency to go viral for playing pickup basketball

Adam Sandler living legend. Great pick. Every also just goes viral every other day for just dropping dimes in a pickup boots game. He's and also he goes viral for being a good friend all the time. Yeah. Like that. When I see Adam Sandler trending it's usually because he did something awesome.

Sandler's universal popularity makes this a consensus opinion in pop culture.

PFT rounded out the list with a tribute to an icon of a different industry, noting her massive impact on the development of young men everywhere.

Lisa Ann is a living legend for 'turning so many boys into men' and being a nice person

Lisa Ann... a true living legend. She turned so many boys into men... and she's a very nice person.

Her status in her industry is undeniable, but the designation is subjective.

With NFL Week 1 just around the corner, the energy is high and the takes are only getting hotter.

Raiders' first-round draft picks carry a permanent 'stink' and are high-risk assets

I've always said that even when you're doing a trade with a team like the Raiders, if you're taking their picks, they still have some of the stink of the Raiders on them... giving them more picks is like giving JPP [Jason Pierre-Paul] more fireworks.

Based on the Raiders' historical struggles with first-rounders (Leatherwood, Ruggs, Arnette), this is a widely supported critique.

The Bears should sign Alex Leatherwood because he's a former first-rounder

I'm not shaming Alex Leatherwood because he is under my first-round theory. The Bears should go get him because he's still a great player... Once he gets to another franchise, then his stock immediately [rises].

The Bears claimed Alex Leatherwood off waivers from the Raiders on August 31, 2022, exactly as Big Cat suggested.

Baker Mayfield will 'fuck up' the Cleveland Browns in Week 1

My hot seat are the Browns. Baker Mayfield... was quoted saying 'I'm going to fuck them up' in regards to the Browns. That's my hot seat Baker.

Baker Mayfield and the Panthers lost to the Browns 26-24 in Week 1. He did not 'fuck them up' in the box score.

There is nobody in the world less likely to 'mix in a water' than Dana Beers

I actually think like there's nobody less likely to mix in a water than Dana Beers. Right... he better, he should go on a water strike... he has been for the last 26 years of his life.

This is a subjective characterization of a Barstool personality.

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning would be too demanding to be successful NFL head coaches

[Tom Brady] will do great [in the booth]... [But] he'd be way too demanding [as a head coach]. Really. Since they working for Peyton, I mean they're workaholics man. They're workaholics.

Neither has become a head coach, so the take remains a matter of expert opinion.

Andrew Luck was the best quarterback I ever coached, even just as a rookie

Andrew Luck. Number one. Really? I only had him as a rookie, but he was unbelievable. Skilled wise is off the chart, but mentally he was right there with Peyton and Andrew and Tom.

High praise from a credible source, though inherently subjective.

Patrick Mahomes' mental processing was on the same elite level as Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and Tom Brady coming out of college

I thought for sure when we're in Arizona, we're getting Patrick Mahomes... skill wise is off the chart. But mentally he was right there with Peyton and Andrew and Tom. I mean, he's like sharp, right? I mean, just really sharp.

Mahomes has gone on to win multiple MVPs and Super Bowls, proving Arians' assessment of his elite potential correct.

Tom Brady will likely play for a couple more years but not five

Nothing surprises me with Tom. I don't know about five [more years], but a couple for sure. He's throwing him all better than he did when he two years ago.

Brady retired at the end of the 2022 season (early 2023), meaning he only played one more season rather than 'a couple'.
