Julian Edelman on Patriots Dynasty, NFL Week 16 Picks, and the Fraud Bowl
The holiday season is officially here, and that means we're subjected to the torture of watching Derek Carr and the Saints on a Thursday night. Big Cat and PFT are ready to wash their eyes out after that performance, but the real story coming out of the game was the Los Angeles Rams. Matt Stafford is playing some of the best football of his career right now, and the guys are starting to look at them as a massive problem for the rest of the NFC.
The Rams are officially a legitimate, good football team
I think we can say that the Rams are legit. Like they're, they're a good, they're a good team.
With Stafford dealing and Puka Nacua looking like a superstar, Big Cat is ready to start printing the graphics. The Rams have moved from a fun story to a team nobody wants to see in the Wild Card round.
The Rams are officially a dangerous playoff team
I'm gonna say this, the Rams, I think they're officially dangerous. That's what they are. They're dangerous. Matt Stafford playing great ball.
This led to a terrifying realization for Lions fans. We are staring down the barrel of Matt Stafford returning to Detroit for their first home playoff game in decades. PFT thinks it might be the only way the Lions' story could possibly end given their history of finding new ways to lose.
A playoff matchup between Matt Stafford and the Detroit Lions would be the meanest thing to ever happen to that franchise
Matt Stafford going to Detroit Lions first home playoff game. Man, that would be brutal. ... That's not fun for anybody. ... That would be the meanest, meanest thing to happen to the Lions. Like of all the things that would be the meanest thing. I don't want that to happen.
The Fraud Bowl and Week 16 Preview
The Week 16 slate is top-heavy with a massive matchup between the Cowboys and the Dolphins. It is the ultimate meeting of two teams that everyone is waiting to call frauds. Big Cat isn't pulling any punches on the stakes of this game: the loser loses their contender status immediately.
The loser of the Cowboys-Dolphins game is officially a fraud, while the winner is a true Super Bowl contender
Whoever wins this game, the loser I'm going to think is just forget about it. ... winner's a super Bowl contender in my mind. This, this is the most important game of the, of the season in the entire NFL. ... They might as well just eliminate the loser from the playoffs and put the winner into their conference championship.
Over in the AFC North, the Steelers are turning to Mason Rudolph to save their season against the Bengals. While the Steelers have looked depressing lately, Big Cat thinks this is exactly the kind of spot where Mike Tomlin finds a way to win just to keep the "never had a losing season" streak alive.
The Steelers will beat the Bengals in Week 16 because of their culture
This feels like to me and also no Jamar Chase for the Bengals and DJ reader, which will be very important in my opinion. This feels like the Mike Tomlin Steelers era is on the line. This is for the culture because it's, it's an underdog game at home. No one thinks the Steelers are good. They're very banged up and I think they're gonna win this game.
PFT is looking at the Panthers and Packers game with a very specific prediction. Given how poorly the Packers' defense has played against quarterbacks like Tommy DeVito and Baker Mayfield recently, he’s expecting a career day for the rookie in Carolina.
Bryce Young will win Offensive Player of the Week in Week 16
I think Bryce Young is gonna get offensive player of the week. Oh. Because the last two quarterbacks that the Packers have played against have done Offensive Player of the Week, baker Mayfield. And then the week before that Tommy Devito. Yeah. So, Bryce Young, next up Player of the week.
Julian Edelman in Studio
The legendary Patriots receiver Julian Edelman joined the show to talk about his media career, his podcast *Games with Names*, and the looming end of an era in New England. With rumors swirling about Bill Belichick's job security, Edelman admitted it’s becoming harder to ignore the noise.
Bill Belichick coaching for a team other than the Patriots is a looming reality
Could you see Bill Belichick coaching for any team, but the New England Patriots next year? I mean, I think it's a reality that's gonna, that's gonna come, you know, I won't believe it until it's done. But it it, when the media starts getting on this and starts talking about it where there's smoke, there's fire. And I just hope it's handled correctly.
Edelman gave some incredible insight into the Chiefs' current struggles at wide receiver. Having played with high-level quarterbacks his whole career, he explained that while drops are a mental virus that can spread through a room, the fix is always back to the fundamentals in practice.
Drops are contagious among wide receivers
Are drops contagious? They are. I, I, I, I honestly think it's not just one thing that you fix it, it, it comes down to, you know, guys working together to execute a play. ... It ultimately comes down to just practice and preparation.
We also got Julian's take on the current MVP race. While many are hesitant to give Brock Purdy his flowers, Edelman argued that Purdy is doing far more than just "managing" the game. He’s operating at a level that very few quarterbacks can reach, regardless of the system they play in.
Brock Purdy is the NFL MVP
How do we talk about Brock Purdy? Is he the MVP? I mean, right now he, he probably is. That's a, I mean that the MVP's always a quarterback, right. ... You have to give credit to what Brock Purdy's doing. You have to, you have to, you know, the, this whole game manager thing, people don't realize it's more like a game operator.
Fantasy Fuccbois and Fyre Fest
Fantasy Fuccbois got festive with the guys leaning into the holiday spirit. PFT is fully bought into the Tommy DeVito hype, predicting that even the notoriously tough Philadelphia crowd won't be able to resist the charm of the Passing Paisan on Christmas Day.
Philadelphia fans will end up rooting for 'Passing Paisan' Tommy DeVito on Christmas
Tommy is gonna go into Philly and that crowd's gonna be rooting so hard for my guy. And they're gonna say, Hey, this guy, he's a good guy. Standup guy. He's one of us. We can't root against our guy. The passing paisan. I love that. And that's what I love about the city. Philadelphia.
To wrap things up, the guys shared their Fyre Fests of the week. PFT is mourning the loss of his mustache before visiting his mother for the holidays, and Big Cat is battling a recurring lost voice during the most important stretch of the football season.
If the Dolphins win this weekend, expect PFT to be unbearable on Tuesday's show.
