Super Wild Card Weekend Recap + Kirk Herbstreit on CFB Title Game

Six games in 48 hours. It was the best Super Wild Card Weekend in history, and Big Cat and PFT are rightfully exhausted after witnessing the Cleveland Browns finally bury the Steelers while the Chicago Bears decided to play their most pathetic game of the year on a channel covered in neon slime. The weekend ended with Big Ben sitting alone on the bench, staring into the abyss, which PFT noted was probably a preview of his retirement activities.

Big Ben Roethlisberger will spend the entire offseason watching pornography

Sad Big Ben. He's going to watch so much porn this offseason.

This is a non-verifiable comedic claim.

The Browns are Them

The Cleveland Browns went into Pittsburgh without a head coach and somehow put up 28 points in the first quarter. While many expected the Steelers to mount a comeback, Mike Tomlin and Big Ben looked every bit the part of the team that limped into January. PFT thinks the regular season 11-0 record was a total mirage and this performance simply put the finishing touches on what we already knew.

The 2020 Pittsburgh Steelers were the worst 11-0 team in NFL history.

This does validate our take that the Steelers were the worst 11-0 team of all time. That was bad.

The 2020 Steelers are frequently cited by sports historians and data analysts as one of the least impressive 11-0 starts due to their late-season collapse and early playoff exit.

Big Cat and PFT celebrated with Browns fans everywhere, noting that while the Chiefs are looming next week, this game was the actual finish line for years of suffering. For this roster and this fan base, a playoff win in Pittsburgh is the ultimate peak.

Beating the Steelers was effectively the Super Bowl for the Cleveland Browns

These Browns just won the Super Bowl because I don't think anybody expects the Browns to go out next week and beat the Chiefs... this was the Super Bowl for the Browns, and they did it.

The Browns did lose to the Chiefs the following week, making this their final peak for the season.

Russell Wilson and the Mini Belichick

The guys moved on to the Rams-Seahawks slugfest, where Sean McVay proved once again why he's considered one of the sharpest minds in the game. By completely pivoting from a high-flying aerial attack to a ground-and-pound defensive machine, McVay showed he isn't married to one scheme.

Sean McVay is a 'mini Belichick' due to his ability to completely change team identity to win

When people put him in the conversation as like the next Belichick or mini Belichick. This is why. Because when I look at the Rams... they basically completely changed their team to a defensive team, running team... He's not going to try to beat you just his way. He's going to beat you whichever way is best.

McVay won a Super Bowl the following year by pivoting back to an aggressive passing game with Matthew Stafford, further proving his adaptability.

On the other side, the luster is starting to wear off in Seattle. Between Pete Carroll's refusal to adjust and Russell Wilson's inability to find a second gear in January, Big Cat is starting to wonder if we've been ranking Russ a tier or two too high.

Russell Wilson does not belong in the same elite tier as Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, and Tom Brady because he lacks their signature postseason success.

We all put him in the Mahomes, Rogers, Brady category. I don't think he is. ... When you think about Brady and [Brees] and all these other guys, they have these insane playoff games. I don't know if Russell Wilson has had that type of resume.

Wilson's career entered a significant decline shortly after this, notably during his tenure with the Broncos, making this take appear prescient in hindsight.

The NVP and the Soul-Sucking Bears

Watching the Bears play the Saints was a trial for Big Cat, made worse by the fact that the broadcast featured 'Young Sheldon' explaining football rules. The only saving grace was the internet-led campaign to crown Mitchell Trubisky as the Nickelodeon Valuable Player. It’s a trophy that carries more weight than anything else in the league right now.

Winning the Nickelodeon Valuable Player (NVP) award is a more prestigious accomplishment than winning a Super Bowl or the NFL MVP.

I know that this is recency bias, but tired Super Bowl Lombardi trophies, wired [Nickelodeon] MVP. ... Russell Wilson's never won it. You know who else hasn't? Patrick Mahomes... Deshaun Watson.

The take is satirical; the NVP is not a recognized professional accolade superior to the MVP or a Super Bowl.

While the NVP win was a landslide, the game itself was a reminder of why the Matt Nagy era feels stuck in neutral. The lack of trust between the coach and the quarterback resulted in a handcuffed offense that couldn't even convert a trick play when it mattered most.

Matt Nagy and Mitch Trubisky cannot coexist because Nagy’s lack of trust in his quarterback results in a 'handcuffed' offense that can't win playoff games.

This is exactly why they can't both coexist because Matt Nagy doesn't trust Mitch Trubisky. So he puts handcuffs on the guy and then is like, hey, go out and try to win a playoff game with handcuffs on.

The Bears declined Trubisky's fifth-year option, and both he and Nagy were eventually gone from the organization within a year of this take.

Kirk Herbstreit on the State of College Football

Kirk Herbstreit joined the show to preview the Alabama-Ohio State National Championship and talk about the evolution of the sport. He shared PFT’s frustration with the modern recruiting landscape, where players often view their college stops as temporary layovers rather than meaningful experiences. Kirk believes the obsession with the NFL is actually hurting the development of many young players.

Modern college recruits are making a mistake by prioritizing the NFL over their college experience

These high school going into college, these kids are missing out on an opportunity to really make a difference in the college game... it's like they don't even really plant their roots at their college stop... they all think they're going to become Patrick Mahomes... when it doesn't happen, you need to have something to fall back on.

This is a philosophical stance on the value of the 'college experience'.

Beyond the title game, the conversation turned to the possible return of the NCAA Football video game. As a former voice of the franchise, Kirk is as desperate for its return as the fans are, specifically because Madden just doesn't capture the unique feel of the college game.

The NCAA Football video game series is far superior to Madden because of its option plays and quarterback run mechanics.

The college football game, it's so much better for me than the Madden game because of the option part of it and QB run.

This is a subjective preference shared by a large portion of the sports gaming community.

As for the actual game on the field, Big Cat thinks it's going to be a high-scoring affair where a single defensive stop could be the difference-maker, while Kirk noted that Justin Fields' mobility will be the primary concern for Nick Saban's defense.

If a defense makes three stops in the Alabama-Ohio State title game, they will win

I think if a defense makes three stops... It's got to be a punt or a turnover. Three stops, I think, wins this game.

Alabama won 52-24. Ohio State's defense struggled to get any stops, and the game was far from the low-stop shootout Big Cat envisioned.

It was a packed show to kick off the best month of the year, even if Big Cat has to watch the rest of the playoffs as a neutral observer.

The Steelers will trade for Sam Darnold and he will become the next Ben Roethlisberger

I still think they're going to get Sam Darnold, and he's going to be the new Big Ben. He's kind of fit for it. Big guy, throws some picks.

Darnold was traded to the Panthers in April 2021, and the Steelers eventually drafted Kenny Pickett to succeed Roethlisberger after Ben's 2021 retirement.

Josh Allen's elite balance and footwork are more important than his arm strength

I actually think that his feet are better than his arm... His feet are the best that I've seen in the NFL this year. He's always on balance. He's never off balance... That is actually sometimes better than having a hose attached to your shoulder.

While subjective, Allen's improved footwork is widely cited by analysts as the key to his 2020 breakout.

Pete Carroll is an overrated coach whose success is primarily due to elite talent masking his lack of in-game adjustments.

I love Pete Carroll, but I think he might not be a great coach. I think he's had some of the best talent on defense. He's had Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch. And Russell Wilson covers up a lot of stuff. ... As far as in-game, the most adjusting he does is just switches his gum from the left side over to the right side during the game.

The Seahawks never returned to the Super Bowl under Carroll before his departure in 2024, and concerns about his inability to adapt to modern offensive trends persisted among analysts.

Russell Wilson is to blame for the Seahawks' stagnant offense and postseason failures

There seems to be a little bit of a rumbling that Russell Wilson is more to blame than people are letting on... in those 16 playoff games, he's 25 touchdowns, 12 interceptions, 236 yards average... that's not like lighting the world on fire.

The Seahawks traded Wilson a year later following continued offensive struggles and playoff exits.

The Washington Football Team is just one competent quarterback away from being one of the best teams in the NFL.

We're a major, like, we get a quarterback and we could be one of the best teams in the NFL. So when I see us, if you have us listed, if you have the Washington football team listed below 16 in your power rankings, I'm going to write some fucking letters.

Washington continued to struggle at quarterback for several years, never reaching 'elite' status following this game.

Tony Dungy is a poor broadcaster who should stick to being the 'warden' of sports morality on Twitter rather than providing professional analysis.

I don't really need to hear Tony Dungy anymore. He's not good. ... You're in the booth. You're supposed to be assessing the game from a professional standpoint, right? So you shouldn't be going like Taylor Heineke's a 10-year starter in this league. That's for what that's what Twitter's for.

This is a subjective critique of broadcasting style.

Mike Vrabel’s fourth-and-two punt against the Ravens was the most cowardly coaching move of the weekend

Mike Vrabel cut off his balls instead of his penis... It was honestly the most cowardly punt that I've seen... Bad weekend for Mikes in their punting. Bad, sad punt weekend.

Statistically, analytics heavily favored going for it; the Ravens scored on the ensuing drive to seal the game.

College football should allow players to return to school if they aren't drafted where they expected, effectively giving them a 'mulligan' for hiring an agent too early.

There should be a rule that two weeks after the draft you can go back to college. You can say, I'm going back to college. ... I hired an agent. I made a mistake. Let me go back and play some more college ball. I really do think that they should give that mulligan.

While the NCAA has relaxed some rules regarding testing the draft waters, a post-draft return for players who have signed with agents remains against current regulations.

The college football Power Five conferences will likely break away from the NCAA to create their own governing body.

I believe that, you know, the Power Five, there's a good chance if you listen to a lot of the talk, the Knight Commission, there's a chance they break off away from the NCAA, create their own governing body.

The landscape has shifted dramatically with conference realignment and the expansion of the playoff, though a formal breakaway from the NCAA has not yet occurred.

Nick Saban and the Alabama defense consistently struggle against tempo offenses and dual-threat, mobile quarterbacks.

It's always a running quarterback that gives Alabama Nick Saban fits. It's a tempo offense, and it's a quarterback who's a dual guy that can create and do some things with his legs. ... That's Justin Fields.

While historically true (e.g., Manziel, Newton), in the 2021 Title Game, Fields was limited by injury and Alabama's defense effectively neutralized him.
