David Ortiz on October Pressure, Red Sox Concerns, and Week 4 NFL Recap

Big Cat is recording this episode from his couch because he officially threw his back out playing basketball like a true athlete, but the show must go on. Week 4 was a weekend where the natural order of the universe finally felt restored. The Patriots stopped pretending to be bad, the Bills remembered they were the Bills, and the Dolphins reminded everyone that September stats are mostly fairy tales.

The NFL Hierarchy Reset

After a few weeks of chaos, the cream is starting to rise to the top, even if that cream is just Bill Belichick's scowl. The Patriots dismantled the Dolphins, putting an end to the early-season hype in Miami. Big Cat is ready to make the Dolphins' seasonal collapse an official part of the calendar.

The Dolphins continue to be candy-ass frauds who always suck

The Patriots probably are good, and the Dolphins continue to be their candy-ass fraud selves. I'm so sick of the Dolphins. I think we need to put an official disclaimer every year. Like, hey, the Dolphins might start hot. Just remember, they always suck.

The Dolphins started 3-0 but finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs in 2018.

PFT isn't fully ready to crown them yet, but he sees the writing on the wall for the rest of the AFC East.

The Patriots are officially back

The Patriots look pretty good, I guess... The Patriots are kind of back, I think. This is their annual thing where they make us think that they're done with the dynasty.

The Patriots won Super Bowl LIII later this season.

While the Patriots are steady, the real story of the weekend was in Chicago. Mitch Trubisky put up six touchdowns against a Buccaneers defense that looked like they were participating in a social experiment to see how many yards a human can give up in sixty minutes. Big Cat is finally seeing the vision.

Mitch Trubisky is the best quarterback in the NFL

The order was – Mitch Trubisky is the best quarterback probably in the NFL. Order was restored to how it should be.

While Trubisky had a career day, he was never the best QB in the NFL and his career eventually fizzled as a starter.

On the flip side, Fitzmagic has officially regressed to FitzTragic, which PFT argues was actually a brilliant business move to secure a backup contract for 2019 without risking further injury behind that Tampa line.

The Chicago Bears are the best team in the NFC and will win the Super Bowl

They happen to be playing against the best team in the NFC, future Super Bowl champion Chicago Bears. So you can't really say that Fitzmagic is over. They just were in a buzzsaw situation.

PredictionFootballHotSarcastic
The Bears finished 12-4 but lost to the Eagles in the Wild Card round (the 'Double Doink' game).

Jeff Fisher's Big Debut

We also saw the coaching legend himself, Jeff Fisher, make his debut in the broadcast booth for the Jets-Jaguars game. While the internet was busy being mean, the guys found his performance to be exactly what you'd want from a man who has perfected the art of the 7-9 season. He was unbiased, he was slow-paced, and he clearly has a massive crush on Blake Bortles.

Jeff Fisher did a fantastic job as a broadcaster in his debut

Jeff Fisher in the booth, Jets, Jaguars. I listened to a little of it. I thought he did a fantastic job as an unbiased person. I saw a lot of tweets saying that he was not good. I think those people are haters and losers.

Broadcasting quality is subjective, though the consensus among viewers and critics at the time was that Fisher was quite poor.

Speaking of the Jaguars, they remain the most confusing team in professional sports. They look like world-beaters against New England and then turn around and treat a game against the Jets like a mandatory HR seminar they didn't want to attend.

The Jaguars are the ultimate up-and-down team that mails it in after big wins

The Jaguars are the ultimate up-and-down team. Every single week. If they have a big win, they will completely mail in the next week. And then off that, I think Doug Marrone just has them on a yo-yo.

The 2018 Jaguars were highly inconsistent, finishing 5-11 after making the AFC Championship game the previous year.

Big Papi Joins the Show

Red Sox legend David Ortiz stopped by to talk about the intensity of October baseball and how he handled the pressure of being the most feared hitter in the world. He shared some incredible insight into the teammate dynamic, specifically how he stayed focused as a DH by feeding information to guys like Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts between at-bats.

I don't mind if a baseball player is selfish as long as they produce every day

People always talk about being selfish, playing the game. I don't mind if you're selfish. The longest you bring something to the table every day.

This is a personal philosophical take on the sport.

When the conversation shifted to the current Red Sox roster heading into the postseason, Papi didn't hold back on where he thinks the armor might have a few chinks. Despite the historic win total, the bridge to the ninth inning is a concern.

The Red Sox middle relief is their biggest postseason concern

I'm a little concerned, to be honest with you, about the middle reliever. You know, I think we need to approach the opposition better when it comes down to it... once Sale got out of the game in the 6 or 7, those inning and a half, I want to make sure that we are covered.

The Red Sox bullpen actually performed remarkably well in the 2018 postseason, particularly Nathan Eovaldi and Craig Kimbrel, en route to a title.

He also gave us his prediction for the Bryce Harper sweepstakes, and it’s a destination that will make everyone in the NL East very uncomfortable.

Bryce Harper will sign with the Phillies

To be honest with you, I think Philadelphia... Philadelphia's trying to win a World Series the next few years.

Bryce Harper signed a 13-year, $330 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies in February 2019.

Bad Play Calls and Ryder Cup Woes

In the weekly segments, James Franklin took home the crown for the most baffling sequence in recent memory. Burning two timeouts just to call a draw play on 4th and 5 against Ohio State is the kind of clock management that makes you wonder if he was trying to lose on purpose.

James Franklin made the worst play call of all time against Ohio State

James Franklin had somehow the worst play call off of two timeouts that I've ever seen. The Ohio State-Penn State game... fourth and five, needs it to keep the game alive. He's got three timeouts. He uses two of them to decide what to call and then calls a handoff that went nowhere.

While 'worst of all time' is subjective, the call is universally regarded as one of the biggest coaching blunders in Penn State history.

Finally, the Ryder Cup was a disaster for Team USA. Big Cat is officially done with golf until the Masters, mostly because the French course setup seemed designed specifically to distract Tiger Woods with a lack of brassieres in the gallery.

France is not a golf country

Ryder Cup. What a waste of a tournament. France is not a golf country. I agree. France is not a golf country.

This is a subjective opinion based on American sports frustration; France has several world-class courses.

If Big Cat can eventually stand up again, we'll be back on Wednesday with more Week 4 fallout.

Jason Witten is a robot and will never be a good broadcaster

Now that [Tony Romo] realized Jason Witten is a robot and never will be good... [Witten] has obviously been told, 'hey, man, you need to start using emotions like humans do'... in the middle of sentences, he would just start smiling because he was like, 'oh, yeah, I'm supposed to tell people that I'm a human being.'

Subjective opinion on broadcasting quality, though Witten's first stint on MNF was widely criticized.

Even any event that's not a soccer event should also be settled using PKs because they're electric.

Conor McGregor will lose to Khabib Nurmagomedov

My Who's Back of the Week is Conor McGregor... maybe because he's going to lose. He is going against Khabib... who wrestled bears as a child.

Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor by submission at UFC 229 on October 6, 2018.

Aaron Rodgers is surly, malcontent, and uncoachable

They hate each other. They always have hated each other. It's great to watch. Aaron Rodgers, surly, malcontent, uncoachable.

The relationship between Rodgers and McCarthy deteriorated to the point where McCarthy was fired in December 2018.

Aaron Rodgers is a system quarterback

Aaron Rodgers, uncoachable. I mean, look at his track record with backup quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers is a system quarterback. Yes, exactly.

This is a satirical take that is fundamentally incorrect given Rodgers' individual talent and multiple MVP awards.
