Gunnar Henderson on MVP Hopes, NBA Free Agency, and the Dingers Only Draft

NBA Free Agency is officially in full swing, and Big Cat and PFT wasted no time diving into the mess in Philadelphia. Paul George is officially a Sixer, which means Max is currently floating on a cloud of delusional hope while the rest of the world waits for the inevitable second-round exit. Big Cat is already calling the shot on how this story ends for the Sixers' long-suffering fanbase.

Paul George to the Sixers is destined to end in tragic heartbreak

Paul George is the big ticket in the NBA free agency and this is going to be so, so good when they flame out of the playoffs. I just don't see how this is gonna end in anything but tragic heartbreak for Max.

The 76ers finished 24-58 and missed the playoffs entirely. Embiid played only 19 games before knee surgery. The Paul George/Embiid/Maxey experiment was a disaster, confirming the 'tragic heartbreak' prediction.

Max isn't hearing the noise, though. He’s putting it all on the table, claiming that anything short of a trip to the Finals or a series win over the Celtics makes this whole experiment a failure. It's a high bar for a team that historically treats the second round like a brick wall.

The Sixers must make the NBA Finals or beat the Celtics within the next two years for the Paul George signing to be a success

It's a two year window to at least make we have to at least make a finals. Make a finals play for. NBA finals beat the Celtics NBA finals. We have to beat the Celtics one of these next two years.

Success is subjective, but the specific goal of making the Finals or beating the Celtics is testable over the next two seasons.

The Fallout of the NBA Super Team

The guys also looked at the crumbling remains of the Warriors' dynasty. Klay Thompson heading to the Mavs feels like the end of an era, but Big Cat is surprisingly bullish on Klay’s future in Dallas. He thinks playing alongside Luka is going to turn back the clock for the second-best shooter ever.

Klay Thompson will be rejuvenated and excel in Dallas

I'm buying Klay Thompson stock. I think he's gonna be, I think you're gonna get like a rejuvenated Klay Thompson hitting wide open threes because Luka's gonna take all the pressure off him. I'm buying Klay Thompson. I don't think this is the end of Klay Thompson.

Klay Thompson has not been rejuvenated in Dallas. He averaged just 11.5 points per game in 2025-26 with 38.4% shooting. The Mavericks were reportedly open to trading him, suggesting the fit has not worked as hoped.

Speaking of the Warriors, Big Cat pointed back to the Jordan Poole extension as the moment it all went south. It wasn't just the money; it was the vibe-killing nature of the deal that poisoned the locker room.

The Jordan Poole contract is the worst in sports history because it destroyed the Warriors' chemistry

I think you could make the argument that the Jordan Poole contract was the worst contract ever given out in all of sports. Not just because of the money given to Jordan Poole, but what it did to the rest of the team. Because that was like Klay watching that. Draymond watching that. It like screwed up the whole vibes of everything.

Whether it's the 'worst ever' is subjective, but its role in the end of the Warriors dynasty is a widely debated basketball take.

Then there is the LeBron James situation in LA. Whether he’s drafting his son or "allowing" the team to hire his podcast co-host, LeBron's grip on the Lakers front office is unprecedented. Big Cat thinks the Lakers are essentially just a LeBron-themed sandbox at this point.

LeBron James has the Lakers franchise held hostage more than any player in sports history

I don't think there's ever been a player that has held a franchise hostage more than LeBron has a Lakers hostage right now. And it's maybe my favorite ongoing thing that he's pretending that isn't existing.

This is a hyperbolic comparative claim about player power that is fundamentally subjective.

Hot Seat/Cool Throne: USMNT and The Brotherhood

Hot Seat/Cool Throne brought some heat regarding the USMNT's pathetic exit from the Copa America. PFT is leading the charge to get Gregg Berhalter fired, arguing that the "golden generation" is being wasted by a coach who plays for ties.

The USMNT must fire Gregg Berhalter now or give up on the 2026 World Cup

Our players didn't play that well, but our coaching stunk. And so now he's gotta be fired. We gotta fire Greg. Now's time. If we're not gonna fire him now, just might as well give up on the World Cup.

Gregg Berhalter was fired on July 10, 2024, just one week after this episode aired.

Big Cat also took aim at Duke after the wild details of the Kyle Filipowski situation went public. The much-vaunted "Duke Brotherhood" looks a little shaky when a star player is allegedly getting groomed right under the coaching staff's noses.

The Duke 'Brotherhood' is a fraud because John Scheyer and the program failed to stop Kyle Filipowski's grooming situation

Duke, do something... they clearly didn't say it strong enough. They cared more about getting points and rebounds out of the guy than his own mental health wellbeing. The brotherhood means nothing. The brotherhood is essentially the brotherhood until you get groomed as a high schooler and then gets snatched up and then, and then have your girlfriend excommunicate your family. Then guess what? The brotherhood doesn't count.

This is a subjective moral and cultural critique of a sports program's values.

Gunnar Henderson and the Dingers Only Draft

Orioles superstar Gunnar Henderson joined the show to pitch himself for the annual Dingers Only draft. Gunnar talked about his walk-up music (Gwen Stefani, surprisingly) and his competitive streak that almost led him to the basketball court instead of the diamond.

I would have been a D1 basketball player for Auburn if I had prioritized it over baseball

I would like to think just my competitive nature that I could have gone and played D1 basketball. If I put as much time and effort as I did into baseball, into basketball, I felt like I had a really good chance at doing that. And being an Auburn fan, I would've loved to go to the Auburn Tigers.

This is a counterfactual claim that cannot be proven, though Gunnar was a high-level high school player in Alabama.

When the actual draft kicked off with special guests Jersey Jerry and Brandon Walker, the chaos was immediate. PFT somehow tried to draft three injured players in a row, including a retired-adjacent Mike Trout. Max, meanwhile, managed to snag Gunnar Henderson himself in what he considers the steal of the century.

Gunnar Henderson was a massive steal in the second round of the Dingers Only draft

I'll take Gunnar Henderson. Fuck. I didn't—I don't know how he lasted that long... I was hoping that PFT was gonna take judge and I was gonna take Gunner, but I had to—he left me Judge and I had to take him. I wanted Gunner. Gunner slipped to the second round.

Gunnar Henderson finished the 2024 season with 37 home runs, validating his high selection in a home run league.

With the draft set and the season officially starting on July 4th, the stakes are high. The loser is headed back to the diamond to face nine outs of college-level pitching, which, based on the athleticism in the room, might take several days to complete.

Good luck to everyone’s livers and fantasy rosters this Fourth of July.

James Harden was the primary problem during his tenure with the 76ers

[James Harden] is probably the problem, James. I've seen enough close up with my own two eyes to know that maybe I should not trust what you're saying about [the Sixers front office].

This is a subjective assessment of team chemistry and interpersonal conflict.

The Denver Nuggets will struggle mid-season because they let Kentavious Caldwell-Pope walk

Stan Kroenke strikes again, KCP going to the Magic and Stan Kroenke unwilling to pay luxury tax and build. I feel like that was a huge, that's one of those ones that we're gonna look at somewhere mid-season and be like, oh shit, the Nuggets just, they're kind of missing a guy. And it's KCP.

The Nuggets did struggle without KCP. Denver's defense suffered without Caldwell-Pope, and while they still competed, the team was notably less dominant, especially when Jokic was unavailable (4-8 without him). Big Cat's mid-season concern was validated.

The Celtics' current ownership spending spree will lead to the franchise's downfall

This is actually the downfall of the Celtics though, because they're just pay—this owner is just paying everyone a billion dollars and then he is like someone else deal with it... Things are going downhill. It'll look fine [now], but things are going downhill.

The Celtics won the 2024 championship and retained their core, though the long-term financial fallout of their contracts remains to be seen.

The July 4th holiday is ruined by Joey Chestnut's absence from the Nathan's hot dog contest

America's on the Hot Seat because it just dawned on me again that Joey Chestnut's not competing. That fucking sucks. One of the things that makes it the best holidays is just not gonna be there. And I think we all just need to be like ready for it because it's gonna suck beyond belief.

The quality of a holiday is subjective, though Chestnut did compete in a separate event that day.

Ryan Mountcastle will have a massive second half because he's over his vertigo

Ryan Mountcastle. He seems to be over the vertigos, but yeah, he does hit a lot of homers. So he's been saving them. He, this is what he told me. He's been saving them for the second half. And I got him having a big second half.

Mountcastle's 2024 season was decent but not 'massive.' He finished with 13 home runs, a similar pace to his first half.
