A big NFL game will be decided by a hip drop tackle penalty this year

The first reason in my mind is we have just added a rule that is going to be debated similar to can't land on the quarterback. There will be a big, big game decided by the hip drop. Because what is it, what's the penalty now? Is it 15 yards?

Whether a 'big game' was decided specifically by a hip drop tackle penalty is hard to definitively verify. The rule was implemented but no singular iconic game-deciding hip drop tackle penalty dominated headlines.

Banning the hip drop tackle makes tight ends even more valuable

I also think this now makes the tight end position even more valuable because a lot of the hip drop tackles are defensive back, smaller guys getting beat a little bit and trying to slow down a bigger guy with a hip drop tackle where he is trying to, you know, don't ride on top of him and let him get a couple extra yards. Try to stop his momentum and bring him backwards. I now that you can't do that, I think tight ends are gonna eat in the flats.

Tight end usage remains high, but it's hard to definitively attribute their success solely to the hip-drop ban versus general offensive trends.

The NFL intentionally made kickoffs unwatchable for years to force fans to accept the new XFL-style rule

What the NFL did was they made kickoffs so shitty for the last couple seasons that now we're welcoming anything that involves a return... The NFL, it was a good job on their part in the long term to make kickoffs unwatchable and so shitty that now they add any sort of element that has return game in it and people are like, 'yeah, this rocks now.'

The logic follows a 'New Coke' strategy, but there's no way to verify the league's intentionality in tanking a product to sell a replacement.

I believe Shohei Ohtani's story about Ippei Mizuhara stealing his money

Shohei, I believe him. I don't know why... but I just think like, I'm gonna believe him until they do the forensic accounting. I'm waiting for the forensic accounting to come out.

Forensic accounting and federal investigations later confirmed Ippei Mizuhara stole over $17 million from Ohtani without his knowledge, fully vindicating Ohtani.

The NBA investigation into Jontay Porter for prop betting irregularities is a bad look

My Hot Seat is Jontay Porter. Raptors center is under an NBA investigation into irregularities on his prop betting involving him. There was a couple times where he basically started a game, took himself out because of a eye injury. And on those games there was a bunch of action on his prop bets. Unders... This is bad.

Jontay Porter was banned from the NBA for life shortly after this episode for betting on games and disclosing confidential info to other bettors.

Caleb Williams having a pink phone and pink nails is cool and mascuine

Speaking of Caleb Williams, he's got a cool pink phone... He was at the USC game last night. He has a pink phone. Got people really upset. I say maybe think differently. He's so advanced. He knows that pink phones are cool... I've always said pink phones are the most masculine thing you can do.

This is entirely a matter of style preference and comedic defense of a team's potential franchise player.

But you see the schedule, they're probably [going] 11 and one. And then get fucking smoked in the playoffs against somebody.

Notre Dame went 11-1 in the regular season as Shane Gillis predicted. However, they did not get 'smoked' in the playoffs — they won three playoff games before losing to Ohio State 23-34 in the National Championship. The regular season prediction was spot-on, but they performed better in the playoffs than expected.

Best golf tournament of the year. And we cannot watch all of it live in 2024. It's a joke. Put it all on TV or online. I don't care. But I wanna watch it Thursday morning.

NC State is no longer a Cinderella; they are a team of destiny.

The one Cinderella that's still in there is a Cinderella that we can all focus on in NC State. Also not a Cinderella anymore because they just keep winning. They went from Cinderella to just Team of Destiny. Like, there was a moment when NC State in that Oakland game, they win in overtime, and I'm like, why can't they just win it all?

NC State continued their improbable run all the way to the Final Four as an 11-seed, fulfilling the 'destiny' narrative.
