Ed Orgeron is officially the greatest interim coach of all time

Is he officially the greatest interim coach of all time? His last head coaching stint at Ole Miss, where he went 10-25... he's won more games as an interim coach than a head coach.

At the time of the take, Orgeron was 6-2 at USC and 5-2 at LSU as an interim, totaling 11 wins, which was more than his 10 wins at Ole Miss.

Based on the eye test, USC is one of the four best teams in the country

If you just look at teams, eye test, who's playing as good as anybody, USC is in the top four. And they're all like, what about September? It matters. But what about any losses?

USC won its final 9 games including a dramatic Rose Bowl, finishing the season as arguably the hottest team in the country and ranked top 5.

The next Texas head coach is already on the hot seat

My hot seat, the next Texas coach. Just throw him on the hot seat right away. Because guess what? Texas winning culture. Haven't won in a while.

Charlie Strong was fired days later and Tom Herman was hired; Herman was eventually fired in 2020 after failing to meet high expectations, proving the perpetual 'hot seat' nature of the job.

The loss to Kansas is the definitive end for Charlie Strong at Texas

I want to do basically what I think is the dagger in Charlie Strong's contract and job there in Texas... Kansas, the dagger in Charlie Strong's heart. Can you believe it? A new coach is now going to be at Texas and at LSU.

Charlie Strong was fired on November 26, 2016, just a few days after this game and episode.

Mississippi State doesn't need to fire Dan Mullen, but the assistant coaches must be evaluated

If we do make a change, I don't think it needs to be Coach Mullen... I don't think we need to go to the extreme of getting rid of him but I think the assistant coaches need to look... he needs to take a hard look in the mirror.

Dan Mullen stayed through the 2017 season before leaving for Florida, so Steve was correct that he shouldn't/wouldn't be the one to go yet.

Being ranked outside the top four in the College Football Playoff provides motivation for the Washington Huskies.

I actually think that it's going to provide us some good motivation being outside of the top four. Don't let the kids get complacent. Don't let them start reading all the headlines. Flip the script on them a little bit. Control our own destiny.

Washington finished the season 12-1, won the Pac-12, and made the College Football Playoff as the #4 seed.

Butch Jones is on the hot seat at Tennessee

My Hot Seat's Butch Jones. South Carolina took the big L to them. He's had a rough season. They had some national championship hopes. They've lost a lot of games, so I think he's on the hot seat.

Butch Jones survived the 2016 season but was fired during the 2017 season after a poor start.

LSU will lose to Alabama because Coach O is a 'simple coach' who can't handle a two-week bye

I think LSU's fucked this week. My sabermetrics is you can't give Coach O two weeks to do anything. Coach O has to have a game a week... You don't spend 14 days studying 2 plus 2 equals 4.

LSU lost to Alabama 10-0 on November 5, 2016.

The University of Oregon is back to sucking like they did before they got good.

Oregon finished the 2016 season 4-8, their worst record since the 1970s.

Washington football is officially back.

Washington [Huskies] might be back. Well, they like to say like, oh yeah, Washington went to that Rose Bowl like 25 years ago.

Washington went 12-2 in 2016, won the Pac-12, and made the College Football Playoff. They were definitely 'back'.

Tennessee is a lucky team that will eventually run out of luck.

Tennessee has been the Les Miles team this year. Les was good for a really long time, but then he would have four or five games that he had no business winning, that he would luck into. And then, like, you get off to a hot start, and then your luck runs out, and when it runs out, it runs out hard. Real hard.

After a 5-0 start with several miracles (App State, Georgia Hail Mary), Tennessee lost 3 straight games and finished a disappointing 9-4.

LSU will look like a completely different team under Coach O

I think you're actually going to see a lot of stuff, a lot of different stuff from LSU when they take the field Saturday night against Missouri.

LSU beat Missouri 42-7 in Orgeron's first game and looked revitalized, eventually winning a title under him in 2019.

The Texas Longhorns are no longer 'back'

Texas no longer back. Because they were back because they beat Notre Dame, who is not back. Now Texas is back into the not back category.

Texas finished the season 5-7, confirming they were indeed not back.

LSU will win their first game under Ed Orgeron because of the 'interim coach boost'

There's no chance that LSU doesn't win their next game. Coach O, he's the fiery guy.

LSU beat Missouri 42-7 in Coach O's first game as interim head coach.

The Syracuse defense is historically bad

The [Syracuse] offense looks inspiring, but the defense looks historically bad.

Syracuse's 2016 defense was indeed poor, allowing 38.6 points per game, ranking 121st out of 128 FBS teams.

Do not schedule North Dakota State because they will stomp you

Do not schedule the [Bison] because they will stomp you if you do. Add Iowa to the list of teams that have gone down to the Bison. Now Minnesota, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Iowa... have all been beaten and stomped on by the Bison.

NDSU has a storied history of FBS upsets, though they became less frequent as fewer top-tier teams were willing to schedule them.

Alabama will beat Ole Miss because their defense isn't good

I'm going Alabama. I think they get it done. Yeah. I'm not sold on the Ole Miss defense at all.

The SEC is dead in 2016 except for Alabama

Do you think the stories about the SEC being dead are correct? I do, except for Alabama. because Alabama looked good last weekend against USC.

Subjective, but Alabama was the only SEC team to make the Playoff that year.

Notre Dame is heading in the wrong direction

If you had to describe Notre Dame for the last seven years, it's perfectly this. Are they back? Question mark. They've been almost back, sort of back, never fully back. But I think now they're going the wrong direction. Now they're set back.

Notre Dame went 4-8 in 2016, their worst season in decades, so this was a highly prescient take.

Jim Trestle believed the punt was the most important play in football

[Jim Trestle] sits in the punt meeting, special teams, he said, 'Punt, the most important play in football.' And he just kept repeating that... I believed him because that's how we played. They called it Trestle Ball.

This is a well-documented part of Jim Trestle's coaching philosophy.

LSU does not have a good quarterback and will continue to struggle passing the ball

Turns out LSU doesn't have a good quarterback. Oh, you think? No doy. The 10,000th year that Les Miles has a quarterback that can't throw the ball.

LSU struggled at QB until the Joe Burrow era in 2018-2019. Les Miles was fired later in the 2016 season.

The Washington Huskies are the #1 surprise team and a dark horse for the national title

My number one surprise team this year is the Washington Huskies... I've got Washington as my number one surprise team this year.

Ohio State will be a playoff team because they remind me of the 1986 Hurricanes

I like Ohio State. They remind me a lot of our 86th University of Miami team, Hurricanes. We had 12 players drafted. Ohio State had 12 players drafted. Everyone thought that we were gloom, doomed the next year, and we came back in 87 and won the national championship.

Ohio State did make the 2016 College Football Playoff, though they were shut out 31-0 by Clemson in the semifinal.

Mississippi State is going to struggle this year because Dak Prescott is gone

I'm going to say Mississippi State is going to struggle a little bit this year just simply because we don't have Dak Prescott on the field anymore for us.

Mississippi State finished the 2016 season 6-7, a step back from their 9-4 season in 2015 with Dak Prescott, though they did win the St. Petersburg Bowl.

Alabama can beat the United States criminal justice system

This one [is] could Alabama beat the United States criminal justice system. And the answer is yes... the Louisiana district attorney from Ouachita Parish has declined to press charges on [Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones] for drugs and guns.

While stated as an opinion on a system, the charges against the players were indeed dropped, proving the premise correct for this instance.
